    Main description: Norwegian Modals is a detailed description of the syntactic and semantic properties of modals in Norwegian. The book thoroughly and critically evaluates previous proposals from the modality literature, focusing on argument structure, scopal properties and the interplay of modals with tense and aspect. After presenting a range of new data and generalizations, a new analysis is proposed, incorporating recent developments in generative linguistic theory and the construction of a new compositional tense system. This investigation is highly relevant for the study of modals and modality in Germanic and other languages. It will also be of value to linguists working on argument structure, tense and aspect, and to those interested in Scandinavian languages

    This book details patterns of language use that can be found in the writing of adult immigrant learners of Norwegian as a second language (L2). Each study draws its data from a single corpus of texts written for a proficiency test of L2 Norwegian by learners representing 10 different first language (L1) backgrounds. The participants of the study are immigrants to Norway and the book deals with the varying levels and types of language difficulties faced by such learners from differing backgrounds. The studies examine the learners’ use of Norwegian in relation to the morphological, syntactic, lexical, semantic and pragmatic patterns they produce in their essays. Nearly all the studies in the book rely on analytical methods specifically designed to isolate the effects of the learners’ L1s on their use of L2 Norwegian, and every chapter highlights patterns that distinguish different L1 groups from one another

Review text: "[...] this is a very welcome and solid addition to the general topic of modality and its generalizable description."Werner Abrahamin: Studies in Language 7/2007 Main description: Norwegian Modals is a detailed description of the syntactic and semantic properties of modals in Norwegian. The book thoroughly and critically evaluates previous proposals from the modality literature, focusing on argument structure, scopal properties and the interplay of modals with tense and aspect. After presenting a range of new data and generalizations, a new analysis is proposed, incorporating recent developments in generative linguistic theory and the construction of a new compositional tense system. This investigation is highly relevant for the study of modals and modality in Germanic and other languages. It will also be of value to linguists working on argument structure, tense and aspect, and to those interested in Scandinavian languages.

    Within a new model of language acquisition, this book discusses verb second (V2) word order in situations where there is variation in the input. While traditional generative accounts consider V2 to be a parameter, this study shows that, in many languages, this word order is dependent on fine distinctions in syntax and information structure. Thus, within a split-CP model of clause structure, a number of micro-cues are formulated, taking into account the specific context for V2 vs. non-V2 (clause type, subcategory of the elements involved, etc.).
