    Verso la metà del Cinquecento Michelangelo lavora a comporre un Canzoniere selezionandone i testi all'interno della sua già consistente produzione poetica. Pur non essendo giunto a una forma definitiva, tale Canzoniere rivela quindi, nel suo organico complesso, una precisa volontà d'autore: esclusi i componimenti di matrice realistica, viene prediletta la forma del madrigale (anche del sonetto, ma in misura molto minore) e ammessa soltanto l'ispirazione amorosa. Forza positiva e negativa allo stesso tempo, Amore non solo petrarchescamente "arde et agghiaccia", ma salva e condanna: le antitesi e le contraddizioni, che Michelangelo trovava in Petrarca ricomposte per mezzo della parola poetica, permangono invece in queste rime con tutta la loro drammatica radicalità. La poesia michelangiolesca riduce al minimo il lessico e lo sottopone a un intenso processo di tipo sperimentale: il ritorno quasi ossessivo sugli stessi temi è il tentativo di saggiare le molteplici potenzialità semantiche del sintagma o della singola parola. Michelangelo recupera materiali della tradizione lirica e li piega alle proprie esigenze fino a renderli irriconoscibili, di fatto stravolgendo, attraverso il filtro della propria irrequieta sensibilità, il codice linguistico che gli proviene da Petrarca e dal petrarchismo. In questa chiave va interpretata, e valutata, anche l'oscurità di tanti componimenti, che è la spia linguistica del labirinto in cui l'io si trova costretto, fra contraddizioni e ripensamenti.

New documentary materials discovered by Rolf Bagemihl add to the early history of the stone block that became the David and provide an identity for the painted terracotta colossus that stood on the cathedral buttresses for which Michelangelo's statue was to be a companion. The David, with its placement at the Palazzo della Signoria, was deeply implicated in the civic history of Florence, where public nakedness played a ritual role in the military and in the political lives of its people.
