    Wie lässt sich über Geschichte schreiben, wenn diese zuverlässig nicht mehr zur Verfügung steht? Ausgehend von dieser Fragestellung untersucht der Band die Literatur der Gegenwart als jenen Schauplatz, auf dem die Konkurrenz von Fakten und Fiktion im Zeichen historischer Narration sowie im Sinne einer geschichtstheoretisch begründeten „Bruchhaftigkeit der Geschichte“ verhandelt wird. Im ersten Teil werden die Signaturen eines seit dem 18. Jahrhundert kontrovers diskutierten Geschichtsbegriffes untersucht, der die Grenze zwischen Fiktion und Historie neu auslotet. Der zweite Teil gilt der Analyse historisch-fiktionaler Texte nach 1989: Diese erzählen nicht einfach von der Geschichte, sondern reflektieren dieses Erzählen bereits. Über traditionelle narratologische Fragen hinaus erfolgt die Textlektüre vor dem Hintergrund jüngster Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaft und der kognitiven Psychologie, der Psychotraumatologie sowie der Medientheorie.

    Since the second half of the twentieth century various routes, including history and literature, are offered in dealing with the catastrophe of World War II and the Holocaust. Historiographies and novels are of course written with words; how can they bear witness to and reverberate with traumatic experience that escapes or resists language? In search for an alternative mode of expression and representation, this volume focuses on postwar German and Austrian writers who made use of music in their exploration of the National Socialist past. Their works invoke, however, new questions: What happens when we cross the line between narration and documentation, and between memory and a musical piece? How does identification and fascination affect our reading of the text? What kind of ethical issues do these testimonies raise? As this volume shows, reading these musical biographies is both troubling and compelling since they ‘fail’ to come to terms with the past. In playing the haunting music that does not let us put the matter to rest, they call into question not only the exclusion of personal stories by official narratives, but also challenge writers’ and readers’ most intimate perspectives on an unmasterable past

    Main description: Die literarische Überlieferung spielt eine wichtige Rolle im Erinnerungsdiskurs, denn Texte haben immer auch als Erinnerungszeichen fungiert. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes versuchen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und mit unterschiedlicher Annäherung an das Thema die literarischen Verfahren der Erinnerung am Einzelfall zu studieren. Diese konkrete Suche nach Spuren literarischer Erinnerung zeigt, wie schwierig, ja sogar problematisch das vielfach verzahnte Wechselverhältnis zwischen Erinnerung, Literatur und dem jeweiligen Kontext zu greifen und zu beschreiben ist

    "Ghostwriting provides the first comprehensive analysis of the fictional prose narratives of one of contemporary Germany's most recognized authors, the émigré writer W. G. Sebald. Examining Sebald's well-known published texts in the context of largely unknown unpublished works, and informed by documents and information from Sebald's literary estate, this book offers a detailed portrait of his characteristic literary techniques and how they emerged and matured out of the practices and attitudes he represented in his profession as a literary scholar. The title "Ghostwriting" signals the convergence in Sebald's works of a set of diverse historical questions, philosophical views, and literary practices. Many historical ghosts haunt Sebald's narratives on the level of story. Moreover, Sebald's narrator plays the role of a ghostwriter in the profound sense that his stories fictionally re-enact the histories of obscure, but once-living individuals whose lives they revitalize, and whose fates are tied up with the most virulent historical conjunctures of the modern world.     Ende des Gedächtnisses – Ende der Politik? Zwei Diskursformationen laufen derzeit parallel. Einerseits die Thematisierung des ‚Politischen‘ im Gegensatz zur ‚Politik‘, d. h. die Suche nach einem Begriff, der die politischen Entwicklungen und Verwerfungen der Gegenwart adäquat erfasst, andererseits die ausufernde kulturwissenschaftliche Modellierung der Erinnerung/des Gedächtnisses. Welche Transformation aber macht der Begriff des Politischen durch, wenn er erinnernd artikuliert und reproduziert wird? Für die Gegenwartsliteratur weist die Chiffre ‚1989‘ der Politik einen so selbstverständlichen Ort zu, dass die Debatten der politischen Philosophie kaum berücksichtigt werden. Dagegen diskutiert der vorliegende Band am Beispiel von Volker Brauns „Das unbesetzte Gebiet“, Thomas Meineckes „The Church of John F. Kennedy“, Kathrin Rögglas „really ground zero. 11. september und folgendes“ sowie Bernhard Schlinks „Der Vorleser“, welche Rückwirkungen das Erinnern auf den Begriff des Politischen oder allgemeiner: auf das Verständnis von ‚Politik‘ hat.

    Since the second half of the twentieth century various routes, including history and literature, are offered in dealing with the catastrophe of World War II and the Holocaust. Historiographies and novels are of course written with words; how can they bear witness to and reverberate with traumatic experience that escapes or resists language? In search for an alternative mode of expression and representation, this volume focuses on postwar German and Austrian writers who made use of music in their exploration of the National Socialist past. Their works invoke, however, new questions: What happens when we cross the line between narration and documentation, and between memory and a musical piece? How does identification and fascination affect our reading of the text? What kind of ethical issues do these testimonies raise? As this volume shows, reading these musical biographies is both troubling and compelling since they ‘fail’ to come to terms with the past. In playing the haunting music that does not let us put the matter to rest, they call into question not only the exclusion of personal stories by official narratives, but also challenge writers’ and readers’ most intimate perspectives on an unmasterable past

Diese konkrete Suche nach Spuren literarischer Erinnerung zeigt, wie schwierig, ja sogar problematisch das vielfach verzahnte Wechselverhältnis zwischen Erinnerung, Literatur und dem jeweiligen Kontext zu greifen und zu beschreiben ist. Literary transmission plays an important role in the discourse on memory, which is not surprising as one of the functions of texts has always been to figure as tokens of memorialization. From different perspectives and with different approaches to the subject, the articles in this volume look at various individual examples in an attempt to cast light on the memorialization procedures to be found in literature. This concrete quest for the traces of literary memory demonstrates how intricate and difficult it is to grasp and describe the manifold reciprocities between memory, literature, and the relevant context.

    Since 1945, authors and scholars have intensely debated what form literary fiction about the Holocaust should take. The works of H. G. Adler (1910-1988) and W. G. Sebald (1944-2001), two modernist scholar-poets who settled in England but never met, present new ways of reconceptualizing the nature of witnessing, literary testimony, and the possibility of a "poetics" after Auschwitz. Adler, a Czech Jew who survived Theresienstadt and Auschwitz, was a prolific writer of prose and poetry, but his work remained little known until Sebald, possibly the most celebrated German writer of recent years, cited it in his 2001 novel, Austerlitz. Since then, a rediscovery of Adler has been under way. This volume of essays by international experts on Adler and Sebald investigates the connections between the two writers to reveal a new hybrid paradigm of writing about the Holocaust that advances our understanding of the relationship between literature, historiography, and autobiography. In doing so, the volume also reflects on the wider literary-political implications of Holocaust representation, demonstrating the shifting norms in German-language "Holocaust literature." Dementsprechend ist auch ,erinnerndes Schreiben´, weit mehr von den Wirkungen narrativer und sprachlicher Muster abhängig, als an einer historischen Wahrheit orientiert. Die Germanistik hat sich diesem Thema, das auch aufgrund der Kontroverse um die NS-Vergangenheit prominenter Schriftsteller wieder aktuell geworden ist, geöffnet. Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert die intensive Diskussion, die darüber auf dem Marburger Germanistentag 2007 geführt wurde. Individual remembering and forgetting is, as we know, not subject to conscious intention, but is part of a collective process of remembering which is formed in part by cultural change. Thus ´,memory writing´ is dependent far more on the effects of narrative and linguistic models than directed by historical truth. German Studies have approached this topic, which has been reignited through the controversies surrounding the Nazi past of prominent authors. The present volume documents the intensive discussions conducted on the subject at the Annual German Studies Conference held in Marburg in 2007.

    Since 1945, authors and scholars have intensely debated what form literary fiction about the Holocaust should take. The works of H. G. Adler (1910-1988) and W. G. Sebald (1944-2001), two modernist scholar-poets who settled in England but never met, present new ways of reconceptualizing the nature of witnessing, literary testimony, and the possibility of a "poetics" after Auschwitz. Adler, a Czech Jew who survived Theresienstadt and Auschwitz, was a prolific writer of prose and poetry, but his work remained little known until Sebald, possibly the most celebrated German writer of recent years, cited it in his 2001 novel, Austerlitz. Since then, a rediscovery of Adler has been under way. This volume of essays by international experts on Adler and Sebald investigates the connections between the two writers to reveal a new hybrid paradigm of writing about the Holocaust that advances our understanding of the relationship between literature, historiography, and autobiography. In doing so, the volume also reflects on the wider literary-political implications of Holocaust representation, demonstrating the shifting norms in German-language "Holocaust literature."
