Eugène Delacroix au Maroc Théodore Chassériau en Algérie emplissent leurs carnets de dessins de figures juives qui nourriront leurs grandes toiles. Au-delà de l'Afrique du Nord, le périple en Terre sainte est porteur d'enjeux plus symboliques. Mû par des aspirations religieuses et une nouvelle curiosité archéologique, qui s'applique de l'Égypte à la Mésopotamie, l'Occident poursuit au Proche-Orient une quête de ses origines.
