    This study examines international standard bibliographic description (ISBD) as standard for quality book publishing in Nigeria. It discusses ISBD as it affects quality book publishing. Three Universities in the South-South region and 250 publishers sampled from six states of the federation were used for the study. The instruments used were validated questionnaire and standardized checklist of the book. One null hypothesis was formulated and tested. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC). The finding of the study shows that there is a significant relationship between ISBD and the quality of books published in Nigeria with regard to authorship, title, place of publication, year of publication, publisher’s name, ISBN, copyright, bibliography and index. The study concluded that ISBD adds quality to published books. Este artigo apresenta uma análise da Norma Internacional de Descrição Bibliográfica/International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) como padrão de qualidade para a editoração e publicação de livros na Nigéria. Discute a ISBD na medida em que afeta a qualidade de edição de livros. A amostra do estudo foi composta por três universidades na região sul e 250 editoras de seis estados da Federação. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados utilizados foram um questionário e um checklist descritivo padronizado aplicado aos livros. Uma hipótese nula foi formulada e testada. Os dados coletados foram analisados utilizando-se o percentual simples e o Coeficiente de Correlação do Produto Momento Pearson/Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC). A conclusão do estudo mostra que há uma relação significante entre a ISBD e a qualidade dos livros editorados e publicados na Nigéria em relação à autoria, título, local de publicação, ano de publicação, nome do editor, ISBN, direito autoral, bibliografia e índice. O estudo concluiu que a ISBD adiciona qualidade aos livros editados e publicados.

    Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung ist die Frage, welche Vor- und Nachteile des informationstechnisch gestützten Arbeitens von Geisteswissenschaftler/inne/n gesehen werden - insbesondere im Bereich digitale Editionen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Bedarfsaspekte, die in einer Interview-Studie erhoben und inhaltsanalytisch ausgewertet werden. Nutzerbedarfsforschung zu virtuellen Forschungsumgebungen, Werkzeugen und Datenbanken wurde in den digitalen Geisteswissenschaften bislang überhaupt nicht oder unzureichend betrieben - etwa durch Befragungen mit vorgegebenen Antwortmöglichkeiten, die bedeutende Anforderungsaspekte ausblenden. Die methodisch aufwändigere, offenere und transparentere Erhebung und Auswertung in dieser Studie beleuchtet das Bedarfsspektrum und seine Facetten umfassend. Dabei wird deutlich, dass nicht etwa einfach benutzbare Werkzeuge zentral sind, sondern dass digital vernetzte Inhalte und damit verbundene Möglichkeiten des Transfers und der Aushandlung von Wissen die entscheidenden Faktoren darstellen. Textuelle und diskursive digitale Strukturen bilden den thematischen Kern der Arbeit und werden aus editionsphilologischer, text- und diskurslinguistischer sowie informations- und wissen(schaft)stheoretischer Sicht analysiert

The finding of the study shows that there is a significant relationship between ISBD and the quality of books published in Nigeria with regard to authorship, title, place of publication, year of publication, publisher’s name, ISBN, copyright, bibliography and index. The study concluded that ISBD adds quality to published books. Este artigo apresenta uma análise da Norma Internacional de Descrição Bibliográfica/International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) como padrão de qualidade para a editoração e publicação de livros na Nigéria. Discute a ISBD na medida em que afeta a qualidade de edição de livros. A amostra do estudo foi composta por três universidades na região sul e 250 editoras de seis estados da Federação. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados utilizados foram um questionário e um checklist descritivo padronizado aplicado aos livros. Uma hipótese nula foi formulada e testada. Os dados coletados foram analisados utilizando-se o percentual simples e o Coeficiente de Correlação do Produto Momento Pearson/Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC). A conclusão do estudo mostra que há uma relação significante entre a ISBD e a qualidade dos livros editorados e publicados na Nigéria em relação à autoria, título, local de publicação, ano de publicação, nome do editor, ISBN, direito autoral, bibliografia e índice. O estudo concluiu que a ISBD adiciona qualidade aos livros editados e publicados.
