    Die Untersuchung beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie die Selektionsbeschränkungen von Verben mit Prädikatskomplementen im Rahmen einer zweistufigen Bedeutungsanalyse abgeleitet werden können. Im Mittelpunkt stehen lokale Verben und ihre PP-Komplemente, die Überlegungen werden jedoch im zweiten Teil der Arbeit auch auf Resultativkonstruktionen ausgedehnt. Um das unterschiedliche Verhalten intransitiver Verben in Resultativkonstruktionen zu erklären, wird eine konzeptuell motivierte Unterscheidung von zwei Typen semantischer Prädikate eingeführt, durch die unergative und unakkusative Verben unterschieden werden können. Auf der Basis dieser Unterscheidung lassen sich allgemeine Beschränkungen zum Aufbau von semantischen Strukturen formulieren, aus denen sich unter anderem Beobachtungen zu thematischen Beschränkungen der Argumentpositionen ableiten lassen. This study inquires how selection restrictions operative on verbs with predicative complements can be derived in the framework of a two-stage meaning analysis. The center of interest focusses on verbs of position and their PP complements, but in the second part of the study the purview is extended to include resultative constructions. In order to explain the variant behavior of intransitive verbs in resultative constructions, a conceptually motivated distinction is made between two types of semantic predicate, allowing a differentiation between non-ergative and non-accusative verbs. On the basis of this distinction general restrictions on the composition of semantic structures can be formulated from which (among other things) observations are derivable about thematic restrictions limiting argument positioning.

    This collection of papers offers an alternative to mainstream functional linguistics on two points. Especially in American linguistics, function and structure are often viewed almost as polar opposites; in addition, structure is often understood as being only a matter of linguistic form - or expression - as opposed to content.     The continuing debate over the existence or non-existence of formal verbal aspect in Gothic triggered the author to write this monograph whose aim is to provide a completely new foundation for a theory of aspect and related features. Gothic, with its limited corpus, representing a translation of the Greek, and showing interesting parallels with Slavic verbal constructions, serves and an illustrative model for the theory. In Part I the author argues that a unified theory of aspect, actional types, and verbal velocity presented there possesses an internal logic and is not at variance with observed facts in various Indo-European languages. In Part II an analysis is presented of the Gothic verb system which seeks to explain the much-disputed function of ga- and to solve the problem of Gothic aspect and actional types which does no violence either to the Gothic text or the Greek original
