    Main description: Die innovative Arbeit untersucht, wie Zeitkonzepte sprachlich ausgedrückt (konzeptualisiert) werden. Dabei werden sowohl grammatische als auch außersprachliche (ontologische) Aspekte mit einbezogen. Ziel der Arbeit ist die Begründung einer formal-semantischen Theorie temporaler Informationen, die Antworten gibt auf Fragen wie "Wie repräsentiert die Grammatik der Sprache Wissen über zeitliche Strukturen?", "Welche formalen Mittel dienen der Explikation dieses Wissens?" usw. Sie leistet einen grundlegenden Beitrag zu einer ontologiebasierten Semantik der natürlichen Sprachen und zur Semantik der Wissensrepräsentationssprachen

    Main description: Focusing on English and German examples, the study deals with the temporal interpretation of texts in non-aspect languages. The author presumes that a coherent interpretation of a text results from a complex interaction between linguistic and extra-linguistic information. The study presents a unified account of the semantics of temporality which treats the varying grammatical factors (aspectual classes, tense, and discourse structure) in a systematic way

    In this study the syntactic properties of empty categories and dummy pronouns are investigated within the framework of Government-Binding theory. The assumption that clauses must have a subject is present in most, if not all, linguistic theories. In GB theory the requirement that clauses have a subject is stipulated as a consequence of the base rules or the Extended Projection Principle. In this book it is claimed that no such stipulation is necessary. The presence of a subject is exclusively determined by the theories of thematic roles and Case. This view is supported by the fact that the alleged dummy subjects Dutch, i.e. er and het, show a variety of properties, which can only be explained if they are not analyzed as dummy subjects. Further confirmation is derived from the fact that Dutch, subjectless sentences are found in precisely those circumstances in which neither -theory nor Case theory requires a subject to be present. Chapter 1 presents a theory of empty categories. This theory enables us to explain the distribution of gaps, and makes precise and correct predictions with respect to the occurrence of parasitic gaps. The non-dummy status of het, discussed in chapter 2, is supported by the fact that it can be the antecedent of PRO, reflexives, and parasitic gaps, and by an asymmetry in wh-movement from sentential complements. The analysis of het leads to a discussion of a variety of constructions, including constructions with raising, ergative, and psychological verbs. The adverbial pronoun er displays several distinct syntactic functions. In chapter 3 it is argued that none of these different functions justifies an analysis of er as a dummy subject. In chapter 4 some of the consequences of the theory introduced in the preceding chapters are investigated. These include a discussion of the status of the subject position in languages such as English, Italian, French, and Spanish, the structure of Old English, and the status of dummy pronouns in German and English

    Zweck des Sammelbandes ist es, eine Debatte über das Verhältnis zwischen Grammatikalisierungsprozessen und Wortartensystemen zu eröffnen. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie sich diachrone Grammatikalisierungsprozesse und synchrone Grammatikalitätshierarchien zur lexikalisch-grammatischen Kategorialisierung des Wortbestandes in natürlichen Sprachen (= Wortartensystemen) verhalten. Während das Wortartensystem üblicherweise bloß als externes Bezugssystem für Grammatikalisierungsprozesse betrachtet wird, wird in den Beiträgen dieses Bandes nach der Grammatikalisierung der Wortarten selbst (in Sprachsystem und Spracherwerb) gefragt.

    Biographical note: Martin Haiden is Post Doc at the UMR 8528-Silex (CNRS, Université Charles-de-Gaulle - Lille 3), France. Main description: Theta Theory explores the lexicon as an interface in the strict sense, as facilitating the flow of information between cognition and the computational system of language. It argues for the traditional concept of a listed lexicon, where semantic roles are encoded as features of verbs, and against event decomposition. Part one of the book discusses the link between cognition and the lexicon. Mainstream theories of lexical semantics are critically reviewed. Furthermore, this part provides an extensive description of the relevant data in German, including agentivity, causation, psychological predicates, and different types of diathesis alternations. Part two is devoted to the link between the lexicon and syntax. It develops a parallel model of grammatical derivation, which allows the formulation of robust generalizations over thematic role assignment, but at the same time acknowledges the relevance of other components, in particular morpho-phonology and narrow syntax. The theory is applied to a wide range of German constructions including modal infinitives, the present and gerundive participle, the past/passive/adjectival participle, verbal particles, auxiliary selection, and unaccusatives/reflexives.
