    In this illuminating new theory of grammar, Hubert Haider demonstrates that there is a basic asymmetry in the phrase structure of any language, whatever sentence structure it takes. Moreover, he argues that understanding this asymmetry is the key to understanding the grammatical causality underlying a broad range of core syntactic phenomena. Until now, Germanic languages have been seen to fall into two distinct classes: those which take an object-verb sentence structure (OV) or a verb-object one (VO). However, by examining the nature of this universal underlying asymmetry, Hubert Haider reveals a third syntactic type: 'Type III'. In particular, he employs the third type to explore the cognitive evolution of grammar which gave rise to the structural asymmetry and its typological implications. It examines the systematic differences between German and English, which follow from this basic difference in sentence structure, and presents the main results of syntactic research on German. Topics covered include the strict word order in VO vs word order variation in OV, verb clustering, clause union effects, obligatory functional subject position, and subject-object asymmetries for extractions. Through this, a cross-model and cross-linguistic comparison evolves, highlighting the immediate implications for non-Germanic OV languages, and creating a detailed and comprehensive description of the syntactic differences that immediately follow from an OV type in contrast with a VO type like English.     This is really two books in one: a valuable reference resource, and a groundbreaking case study that represents a new approach to constructional semantics. It presents a detailed descriptive survey, using extensive examples collected from the Internet, of German verb constructions in which the expressions durch ('through'), über ('over'), unter ('under'), and um ('around') occur either as inseparable verb prefixes or as separable verb particles. Based on that evidence, the author argues that the prefixed verb constructions and particle verb constructions themselves have meaning, and that this meaning involves subjective construal processes rather than objective information. The constructions prompt us to distribute focal attention according to patterns that can be articulated in terms of Talmy's notion of "perspectival modes". Among the other topics that play an important role in the analysis are incremental themes, reflexive trajectors, fictive motion, "multi-directional paths", and "accusative landmarks"

    This monograph explores some consequences of the abandonment of phrase-structure grammar in favor of a Merge-based syntax, which dispenses with the notion of 'projection.' This reduced architecture is shown to shed new light on two long-standing problems in syntactic theory: split topicalization and quantifier float are analyzed as deriving from underlying exocentric (label-less) constituents in argument or adjunct position, which necessitate symmetry-breaking displacement.     The study sees itself as a strictly empirical investigation into light verb constructions (LVC) in present-day German which focuses on the faits de langue in the Saussurean sense. It takes as its starting point ten functional verbs regarded in the literature as ?typical?.
