    Gender, Canon and Literary Historyinvestigates the reception of 19th-century women’s writing in German literary histories by way of case studies. It fills a longstanding gap both in the study of gender and literary history. The case studies concentrate on the reception of women writing in the Age of Romanticism (e.g., Rahel Varnhagen) as well as women who were inspired to write by the German Revolution (e.g., Fanny Lewald). Main description: It has been shown that the total number of women who published in German in the 18th and 19th centuries was approximately 3,500, but even by 1918 only a few of them were known. The reason for this lies in the selection processes to which the authors have been subjected, and it is this selection process that is the focus of the research here presented. Gender, Canon and Literary History investigates the reception of 19th-century women’s writing in German literary histories by way of case studies. It fills a longstanding gap both in the study of gender and literary history. The case studies concentrate on the reception of women writing in the Age of Romanticism (e.g., Rahel Varnhagen) as well as women who were inspired to write by the German Revolution (e.g., Fanny Lewald).

    J. C. Gottsched, who reformed early Enlightenment German theater, claimed for comedy the ability to transform morality. The new literary comedies of the 1740s, among the other moral goals that they pursued, propagated a new sentimental discourse promoting marriage based on love while devaluing its traditional socioeconomic foundations. Yet in comedies by well-known dramatists of the period such as Gottsched, Gellert, J. E. Schlegel, Lessing, and Quistorp, alternative gender roles and sexual behaviors call the primacy of marriage into question: there are women who refuse to be integrated into marriage, episodes of cross-dressing that foreground the culturally constructed aspects of gender roles, instances of male same-sex desire, and allusions to female same-sex desire. Edward T. Potter examines this marital discourse in close readings of these authors' plays, uncovering the ambiguity of eighteenth-century comedy's stance on marriage and highlighting its resistance to the emerging discourse of the sentimental marriage. In addition to excavating the connections between the texts and norms regarding gender roles and sexual behavior, Potter also examines how these comedies self-reflexively perform their own reception in plays-within-plays that reflect upon early Enlightenment comedy, poetics, and pedagogical aesthetics and thereby comment on the efficacy of theater as a means of propagating such norms.     How can postmodern subjectivity be ethically conceived? What can literature contribute to this project? What role do 'gender' and 'nation' play in the construction of contemporary identities? 'Nomadic Ethics' broaches these questions, exploring the work of five women writers who live outside of the German-speaking countries or thematize a move away from them: Birgit Vanderbeke, Dorothea Grünzweig, Antje Rávic Strubel, Anna Mitgutsch, and Barbara Honigmann. It draws on work by Rosi Braidotti, Sara Ahmed, and Judith Butler to develop a nomadic ethics, and examines how the writers under discussion conceptualize contemporary German and Austrian identities - especially but not only gender identities - in instructive ways. The book engages with a number of critical issues in contemporary German studies: globalization; green thought; questions of gender and sexuality; East (and West) German identities; Austrianness; the postmemory of the Holocaust; and Jewishness. In this way, 'Nomadic Ethics' offers a valuable contribution to debates about the nature of German studies itself, as well as insightful readings of the individual authors and texts concerned.     How can postmodern subjectivity be ethically conceived? What can literature contribute to this project? What role do 'gender' and 'nation' play in the construction of contemporary identities? 'Nomadic Ethics' broaches these questions, exploring the work of five women writers who live outside of the German-speaking countries or thematize a move away from them: Birgit Vanderbeke, Dorothea Grünzweig, Antje Rávic Strubel, Anna Mitgutsch, and Barbara Honigmann. It draws on work by Rosi Braidotti, Sara Ahmed, and Judith Butler to develop a nomadic ethics, and examines how the writers under discussion conceptualize contemporary German and Austrian identities - especially but not only gender identities - in instructive ways. The book engages with a number of critical issues in contemporary German studies: globalization; green thought; questions of gender and sexuality; East (and West) German identities; Austrianness; the postmemory of the Holocaust; and Jewishness. In this way, 'Nomadic Ethics' offers a valuable contribution to debates about the nature of German studies itself, as well as insightful readings of the individual authors and texts concerned.     It has been shown that the total number of women who published in German in the 18th and 19th centuries was approximately 3,500, but even by 1918 only a few of them were known. The reason for this lies in the selection processes to which the authors have been subjected, and it is this selection process that is the focus of the research here presented. Gender, Canon and Literary History investigates the reception of 19th-century women’s writing in German literary histories by way of case studies. It fills a longstanding gap both in the study of gender and literary history. The case studies concentrate on the reception of women writing in the Age of Romanticism (e.g., Rahel Varnhagen) as well as women who were inspired to write by the German Revolution (e.g., Fanny Lewald).

    Die Arbeit fragt nach der Gültigkeit des Geschlechtscharakterdiskurses im 19. Jahrhundert. Anhand ausgewählter Romane der deutschen, englischen und französischen Literatur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts wird der These eines spezifisch weiblichen Konflikts zwischen Verstand und Gefühl nachgegangen. Im Vergleich mit zeitgenössischen Erziehungsratgebern wird der westeuropäische Roman in seinen diskursgeschichtlichen Kontexten exploriert. This work examines the validity of 19th century gender discourses. Using a selection of novels from the German, English, and French literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, it explores the thesis that there is a specifically feminine conflict between understanding and emotion. Using contemporary instructional manuals for comparison, it undertakes a historical exploration of the contextual place of the Western European novel in gender discourse.

    J. C. Gottsched, who reformed early Enlightenment German theater, claimed for comedy the ability to transform morality. The new literary comedies of the 1740s, among the other moral goals that they pursued, propagated a new sentimental discourse promoting marriage based on love while devaluing its traditional socioeconomic foundations. Yet in comedies by well-known dramatists of the period such as Gottsched, Gellert, J. E. Schlegel, Lessing, and Quistorp, alternative gender roles and sexual behaviors call the primacy of marriage into question: there are women who refuse to be integrated into marriage, episodes of cross-dressing that foreground the culturally constructed aspects of gender roles, instances of male same-sex desire, and allusions to female same-sex desire. Edward T. Potter examines this marital discourse in close readings of these authors' plays, uncovering the ambiguity of eighteenth-century comedy's stance on marriage and highlighting its resistance to the emerging discourse of the sentimental marriage. In addition to excavating the connections between the texts and norms regarding gender roles and sexual behavior, Potter also examines how these comedies self-reflexively perform their own reception in plays-within-plays that reflect upon early Enlightenment comedy, poetics, and pedagogical aesthetics and thereby comment on the efficacy of theater as a means of propagating such norms.     How can postmodern subjectivity be ethically conceived? What can literature contribute to this project? What role do 'gender' and 'nation' play in the construction of contemporary identities? 'Nomadic Ethics' broaches these questions, exploring the work of five women writers who live outside of the German-speaking countries or thematize a move away from them: Birgit Vanderbeke, Dorothea Grünzweig, Antje Rávic Strubel, Anna Mitgutsch, and Barbara Honigmann. It draws on work by Rosi Braidotti, Sara Ahmed, and Judith Butler to develop a nomadic ethics, and examines how the writers under discussion conceptualize contemporary German and Austrian identities - especially but not only gender identities - in instructive ways. The book engages with a number of critical issues in contemporary German studies: globalization; green thought; questions of gender and sexuality; East (and West) German identities; Austrianness; the postmemory of the Holocaust; and Jewishness. In this way, 'Nomadic Ethics' offers a valuable contribution to debates about the nature of German studies itself, as well as insightful readings of the individual authors and texts concerned.
