    It is by now almost a cliché that the flight and expulsion of Germans from east-central Europe at the end of the Second World War was a taboo topic in the German Democratic Republic. According to this claim, the Socialist Unity Party (SED) suppressed reference to flight and expulsion so as not to upset its socialist neighbors. This book shows that such a view does not hold up to serious scrutiny. While the topic may not have been addressed in the realm of politics or official commemoration, it was picked up again and again in literature, particularly fiction. Representations of flight and expulsion were by no means restricted, as some have asserted, to Christa Wolf's novel Kindheitsmuster: Niven's study documents around 100 novels and short stories published in the GDR that address flight or expulsion. He argues that in the 1950s and early 1960s GDR fiction included many refugee figures. The predominant emphasis was on their integration under socialism rather than their experience of flight and loss of home; nevertheless, flight and to a lesser degree expulsion were depicted, as was their impact on individuals. They continued to be thematized in the late GDR and even, to a degree, after unification. Flight and expulsion, then, were subject to a developing literary discourse in the GDR, a discourse that this book explores.     This book presents a comparative approach to the study of multicultural literature. Focusing on the development of migration literature in Sweden, Denmark, Flanders, and the Netherlands, it argues that the political and institutional preconditions for the development of 'multicultural' literatures are still given within the frame of the nation-state. As a consequence, both the field of 'migration literature' and the (multi- )lingual quality of literary texts are shaped differently in each state and in each language area. The volume delineates the development of multicultural literature in Scandinavia and the Low Countries as a function of the specific language situations in these countries and the various political, institutional, and discursive contexts. This book offers a comprehensive theoretical and methodological analysis of multilingualism and multicultural literature. It also provides overviews sketching the discourse on multiculturalism, language and the development of the literary field

    It is by now almost a cliché that the flight and expulsion of Germans from east-central Europe at the end of the Second World War was a taboo topic in the German Democratic Republic. According to this claim, the Socialist Unity Party (SED) suppressed reference to flight and expulsion so as not to upset its socialist neighbors. This book shows that such a view does not hold up to serious scrutiny. While the topic may not have been addressed in the realm of politics or official commemoration, it was picked up again and again in literature, particularly fiction. Representations of flight and expulsion were by no means restricted, as some have asserted, to Christa Wolf's novel Kindheitsmuster: Niven's study documents around 100 novels and short stories published in the GDR that address flight or expulsion. He argues that in the 1950s and early 1960s GDR fiction included many refugee figures. The predominant emphasis was on their integration under socialism rather than their experience of flight and loss of home; nevertheless, flight and to a lesser degree expulsion were depicted, as was their impact on individuals. They continued to be thematized in the late GDR and even, to a degree, after unification. Flight and expulsion, then, were subject to a developing literary discourse in the GDR, a discourse that this book explores.     Handbücher, illustrierte Broschüren von Werbeagenturen, Briefe und Reiseberichte von Auswanderern, Reportagen in Zeitungen und Journalen, öffentliche Debatten sowie nicht zuletzt eine Vielzahl von literarischen Texten - all dies sind Bestandteile eines komplexen Diskurses, der mit den umfangreichen Wanderungsbewegungen von Deutschland nach den USA ab der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts einhergeht. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes arbeiten den bis heute allenfalls für Teile der so genannten Populärliteratur erschlossenen Diskurs auf und zeigen dabei insbesondere, dass auch für die Literatur des Bürgerlichen Realismus das fremde Amerika und die Wanderungen dorthin vielfach konstitutiv für das Erzählen sind. Texte von Auerbach, Fontane, Keller, Raabe oder Spielhagen zeichnen sich in viel stärkerem Maße als bislang angenommen durch inter- und transkulturelle Bezüge aus, was sie zum einen durchaus als Bestandteil von Globalisierungsbewegungen erscheinen lässt, zum anderen aber auch in eine größere Nähe zu Autoren rückt, die sich auf Abenteuerromane spezialisiert haben

    A compelling study of views about population and demographic mobility in the British long eighteenth centuryIn John Milton's Paradise Lost of 1667, Adam and Eve are promised they will produce a "race to fill the world," a thought that consoles them even after the trauma of the fall. By 1798, the idea that the world would one day be entirely filled by people had become, in Thomas Malthus's hands, a nightmarish vision. In Peopling the World, Charlotte Sussman asks how and why this shift took place. How did Britain's understanding of the value of reproduction, the vacancy of the planet, and the necessity of moving people around to fill its empty spaces change? Sussman addresses these questions through readings of texts by Malthus, Milton, Swift, Defoe, Goldsmith, Sir Walter Scott, Mary Shelley, and others, and by placing these authors in the context of debates about scientific innovation, emigration, cultural memory, and colonial settlement.Sussman argues that a shift in thinking about population and mobility occurred in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. Before that point, both political and literary texts were preoccupied with "useless" populations that could be made useful by being dispersed over Britain's domestic and colonial territories; after 1760, a concern with the depopulation caused by emigration began to take hold. She explains this change in terms of the interrelated developments of a labor theory of value, a new idea of national identity after the collapse of Britain's American empire, and a move from thinking of reproduction as a national resource to thinking of it as an individual choice. She places Malthus at the end of this history because he so decisively moved thinking about population away from a worldview in which there was always more space to be filled and toward the temporal inevitability of the whole world filling up with people Frontmatter -- Contents -- Introduction -- Chapter 1.
