    Der Sammelband „Literatur intermedial" konzentriert sich auf eine Epoche, die in besonderer Weise von medienästhetischen Paradigmenwechseln geprägt worden ist: die Phase vom Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs bis zum Ausbruch der Studentenunruhen in den westlichen Demokratien. Bereits in den Anfangsjahren der Weimarer Republik kommt es in Deutschland zu einem kulturellen Modernisierungsschub, der den Film zu einem neuen Leitmedium aufsteigen lässt und die Literatur zu einer programmatischen Neuorientierung zwingt. Zugleich bleiben im Kontext konservativer Strömungen überkommene Medienpräferenzen virulent, wobei man auch hier unverkennbar auf die veränderten Rahmenbedingungen reagiert. Die Jahrzehnte zwischen der Machtübernahme durch die Nationalsozialisten und den westeuropäischen Studentenunruhen werden zumeist als Phasen ohne medienästhetische Innovationen angesehen - eine Fehleinschätzung, wie mehrere Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes zeigen können, indem sie vor Augen führen, wie intermediale Schreibweisen und medienästhetische Reflexionen auch zwischen 1933 und 1968 konsequent weiterentwickelt werden. Die Ausschreibung der hier dokumentierten Tagung hatte den umfassenden Literaturbericht Jan-Dirk Müllers von 1985 als Ausgangspunkt genommen, an die Menge und die Vielfalt der seither geleisteten Forschung über den Prosaroman erinnert und zudem darauf verwiesen, dass in diesem Vierteljahrhundert wie wohl nie zuvor in der Fachgeschichte Forschungsparadigmen formuliert, diskutiert und propagiert worden waren; eine Vielzahl von ihnen betraf gerade auch den Prosaroman. Vor diesem Hintergrund steht die an der Jahrtausendwende getroffene Feststellung Müllers: “Eine Geschichte der Prosaromane, die sie nicht mehr nur vor dem Hintergrund ihrer mittelalterlichen Vorläufer betrachtet, ist noch zu schreiben” – ein Ziel, das weiter als je in der Ferne liegen dürfte. Insofern wollen die zwei Dutzend hier vorgelegten Tagungsbeiträge einzig neue Annäherungen an den ebenso vielfältigen wie reizvollen Gegenstand bieten. Günstig mag immerhin zu Buche schlagen, dass er in der Optik verschiedener Disziplinen (neben der Germanistik: Kunst-, Sprach-, Buchwissenschaft, Romanistik) betrachtet wird, dass ferner das Einleitungskapitel eine Tagungsbilanz erstellt und dass abschliessend eine Bibliographie die seit 1985 geleistete Forschung wenigstens als Titelliste fassbar macht

Anne Duden’s reputation as one of the most innovative writers of her generation, established in 1982 with the experimental stories in Übergang, was confirmed in 1985 by Das Judasschaf, a novel interweaving an individual’s anguish with the cultural trauma of the German past. In her acclaimed poem cycles Steinschlag (1993) and Hingegend (1999) Duden pushes the limits of language in densely metaphoric evocations of landscapes and places of political and personal remembrance, mixing lament for ruined nature with grotesque comedy, mystic vision with horror. Duden is a distinguished practitioner of short forms. Her essays display the same intense engagement with the visual arts as informs her narrative texts. Her deep interest in music is echoed in the musicality of short prose poems. This volume presents for the first time a comprehensive collection of approaches to Duden's fiction, poetry and essays by international scholars. Topics include: the ethics and aesthetics of Duden’s engagement with German history; her constructions of female subjectivity; her criticism of western dualistic thinking with its devaluation of the body and exploitation of nature; her position within a modernist tradition with roots in the Romantic Age; the visual arts and poetic influences such as Hölderlin and Celan; the dilemmas of translating Duden’s highly individual style. Three essays on Steinschlag constitute the first systematic reading of this difficult, much praised cycle

The first volume of Benjamin Studies publishes the keynote lectures of the first Congress of the International Walter Benjamin Association, which took place in Amsterdam, July 1997. Its title bears witness to the most central concepts of Benjamin’s philosophy of culture. Strongly influenced as he was by Kant, Benjamin never lost his inclination to analyse the components of reality as fashioned by ourselves. Because he was also a materialist, for him the modes of fashioning were shaped in turn by the times and places we occupy in history. As a consequence, Benjamin’s theory assigns a pivotal role in the interaction between the world and its inhabitants to the media: language with its plethora of discourses, the arts, and the whole technology of reproduction. The historical and social development of the media is, translated, according to him, into our instruments of perception, and this perception constructs the elements of the world, the knowledge of this construction and the knowledge of the constructor. The self-knowledge of the constructor is what we call ‘experience’. Within this broad epistemological framework, the diversity and complexity of Benjamin’s project acquires a fundamental coherence and is therefore able to accommodate the temporal volatility of the phenomena of our world. It’s not surprising, therefore, that Perception andamp; Experience offers the most stimulating variety of topics, and that the keynote lectures reflect merely an intensification of interest in certain areas within a much larger field of investigation. The texts presented here pinpoint the central preoccupations of today’s debates amongst Benjamin scholars, preoccupations which are themselves responses to our own historical imperatives

This volume presents a review of this career, going far beyond short-lived arguments to present an insightful overview of much of his work. It considers not only major aspects of his writing, covering both his literary beginnings and the most recent works, but also different, previously neglected features of his persona and his writing, namely his activity as a university teacher and his art criticism. In addition, fruitful comparisons are made with other writers, such as Proust, Grass and Uwe Johnson. At the same time, recent controversies are also considered with major attention being paid to Walser’s public speeches and those works of fiction which have been seen by some as demanding the end of German self-recriminations over the Nazi past.
