"This collection offers a set of new readings on the history, meanings, and cultural innovations of the grotesque as defined by various current critical theories and practices. Since the grotesque frequently manifests itself as striking incongruities, ingenious hybrids, and creative deformities of nature and culture, it is profoundly implicated in early modern debates on the theological, philosophical, and ethical role of images. This consideration serves as the central focus from which the articles in the collection then move outward along different lines of conceptualization, chronology, cultural relevance, place, and site. They cover a wide spectrum of artistic media, from prints to drawings, from sculptures to gardens, from paintings to stuccos. As they do this, they engage with, and bring together, theoretical perspectives from writers as diverse as Plato and Paleotti, Vitruvius and Vasari, Molanus to Montaigne. Whether travelling a short distance from Nero's Domus Aurea to Raphael's Vatican logge, or across the ocean from Italy to New Spain, this volume goes further than any previous study in defining the historic understanding of grotesque and, in so doing, providing us with a more nuanced resource for our understanding of an art form once viewed as peripheral."--

The IASS (International Association for Scandinavian Studies) is the international organization for the research of Nordic literature, culture and linguistics. Since 1956 the IASS conference has been organized every other year. In 2016, the 31th IASS conference took place in Groningen (Netherlands). This 2016 conference revolved around the 21st century as an era characterized by dynamics with different implications. These ongoing global transitions are reflected in the humanities; the dichotomy between centre and periphery has invaded the literary discourse. In many small language areas, more translated literature is being published than literature written in the national language. This implies that cultural mediators play a major role in the production of literature. Their efforts are made visible in a transnational approach to the history of literature. Digitization has come to play an increasing role in visualizing the processes of cultural mediation. The great migration waves after World War II have changed the societies in Europe and the Nordic region. Migration is not a new phenomenon; rather, it has shaped our view of the world and history at all times and has influenced many cultures and languages. Migration after 1980 has resulted in new literary genres and new words. Immigrant languages have gained their legitimacy and helped create new identities. All these perspectives - and many more - are reflected in the contributions in this volume. They show the transformation the Nordic countries and Europe are in. New themes and new perspectives are introduced, and the language of the academic discourse is changing: of the 32 contributions, 11 are in English. This is undoubtedly a consequence of the internationalization of universities in general and the humanities in particular

The collection of articles presented in this volume addresses a number of general theoretical, methodological and empirical issues in the field of Historical Linguistics, in different levels of analysis and on different themes: (i) phonology, (ii) morphology, (iii) morphosyntax, (iv) syntax, (v) diachronic typology, (vi) semantics and pragmatics, and (vii) language contact, variation and diffusion. The topics discussed, often in a comparative perspective, feature a variety of languages and language families and cover a wide range of research areas. Novel analyses and often new diachronic data - also from less known and under-investigated languages - are provided to the debate on the principles, mechanisms, paths and models of language change, as well as the relationship between synchronic variation and diachrony. The volume is of interest to scholars of different persuasions working on all aspects of language change

"In studies of Holocaust representation and memory, scholars of literature and culture traditionally have focused on particular national contexts. At the same time, recent work has brought the Holocaust into the arena of the transnational, leading to a crossroads between localized and global understandings of Holocaust memory. Further complicating the issue are generational shifts that occur with the passage of time, and which render memory and representations of the Holocaust ever more mediated, commodified, and departicularized. Nowhere is the inquiry into Holocaust memory more fraught or potentially more productive than in German Studies, where scholars have struggled to address German guilt and responsibility while doing justice to the global impact of the Holocaust, and are increasingly facing the challenge of engaging with the broader, interdisciplinary, transnational field. Persistent Legacy connects the present, critical scholarly moment with this long disciplinary tradition, probing the relationship between German Studies and Holocaust Studies today. Fifteen prominent scholars explore how German Studies engages with Holocaust memory and representation, pursuing critical questions concerning the borders between the two fields and how they are impacted by emerging scholarly methods, new areas of inquiry, and the changing place of Holocaust memory in contemporary Germany."-- Introduction / Jennifer M. The papers published in this volume were originally presented at the Third North American Symposium on Corpus Linguistics and Language Teaching held on 23-25 March 2001 at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. Each paper analyses some aspect of language use or structure in one or more of the many linguistic corpora now available. The number of different corpora investigated in the book is a real testament to the progress that has been made in recent years in developing new corpora, particularly spoken corpora, as over half of the papers deal either wholly or partially with the analysis of spoken data. This book will be of particular interest to undergraduate and graduate students and scholars interested in corpus, socio and applied linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and language teaching

This volume presents the main lectures of the 22nd Congress of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in September 2016. Sixteen internationally distinguished scholars present their current research on the Hebrew Bible, including the literary history of the Hebrew text, its Greek translation and history of interpretation. Some focus on archeological and iconographic sources and the reconstruction of ancient Israelite religion while others discuss the formation of the biblical text and its impact for cultural memory. The volume gives readers a representative view of the most recent developments in the study of the Old Testament

This book will be of particular interest to anyone interested in the application of corpus linguistic techniques to language study and instruction. This volume includes selected papers from the Fourth North American Symposium, held in Indianapolis and hosted by the Indiana Center for Intercultural Communication at Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis (IUPUI) in November, 2002. These papers – from authors representing eight countries including the U.S., Belgium, China, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Spain – provide a wide range of views of and approaches to corpus linguistic. Topics range from theory and analysis to classroom application, and include the study of oral discourse as well as the study of written discourse, including internet-based discourse. Consequently, this volume is divided into two sections. The first section focuses on the use of corpus linguistics in the analysis of spoken and written discourse; the second section focuses on the direct pedagogical application of corpus linguistics, reflecting the applied foundation of this branch of linguistics

The pioneering work of Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm in the areas of Germanic comparative and historical linguistics, lexicography, philology, and medieval studies places them squarely among the most important figures in the history of the language sciences. The contributions to this volume present a fascinating and timely reevaluation and reaffirmation of the significance of the Grimm Brothers' work in these areas, all of which the Grimms viewed as necessary components in their search for the essence of the German and Germanic Volksgeist

This book is about particles in the narrower sense of the word as opposed to the broader meaning covering all uninflected words of a language. In the narrower meaning of the linguistic term particles can be distinguished between logical, or scalar particles and modal, or pragmatic particles. The semantic, pragmatic and syntactic properties of modal particles differ vastly from those of the scalar particles, on the one hand, and their homonymic counterparts functioning in different syntactic categories, on the other hand. The contributions to this volume offer the latest research on the semanti

Introduction -- Die Mummel / Karen Duve -- Translating Karen Duve into English with a few peripheral observations on translation in general / Anthea Bell -- The novels of Karen Duve : just 'chick lit with (...) grime' (and dragons)? / Peter J. Graves -- Nature, bodies and breakdown in Anne Duden's 'Das Landhaus' and Karen Duve's Regenroman / Teresa Ludden -- Lust or disgust? : the blurring of boundaries in Karen Duve's Regenroman / Elizabeth Boa -- 'De nymphis, sylphis, pygmaeis et salamandris'--zur Verwendung eines Motivkreises in Texten von Michael Fritz, Julia Schoch und Karen Duve / Elisa Müller-Adams -- Von Jonnny Rotten bis Werther : Karen Duves Dies ist kein Liebeslied zwischen Popliteratur und Bildungsroman / Heike Bartel -- Becoming bodies : corporeal potential in short stories by Julia Franck, Karen Duve, and Malin Schwerdtfeger / Lucy Macnab -- 'Ganz gewöhnlicher Ekel'? : disgust and body motifs in Jenny Erpenbeck's Geschichte vom alten Kind / Katie Jones -- 'Nur manchmal mussten sie laut und unverhofft lachen' : Kerstin Hensel's use of Märchen / Lyn Marven -- Granny knows best : the voice of the granddaughter in 'Grossmütterliteratur' / Petra M. Bagley -- 'und dabei heisst es immer aufbruchstimmung' : das Verschwinden einer Metropole in ihren Texten / Franziska Meyer. Pushing at Boundaries presents approaches to women writers who have recently had a big impact in shaping the contemporary literary field in Germany. The opening chapters offer the first extensive consideration of Karen Duve's work, including an excerpt from her latest novel, the romance parody Die entführte Prinzessin, a fascinating commentary by her translator Anthea Bell, and essays on her acclaimed novel Regenroman, her subversive take on West German youth culture in the 1980s in Dies ist kein Liebeslied, and explorations of the witty echoes of fairy tales and myths in all her novels and stories. Other writers compared with Duve or discussed independently include Anne Duden, Jenny Erpenbeck, Julia Franck, Michael Fritz, Kerstin Hensel, Julia Schoch, Malin Schwerdtfeger, and Maike Wetzel. A final essay explores Berlin, as capital city and urban jungle, in recent novels by Sibylle Berg, Tanja Dückers, Alexa Hennig von Lange, Judith Hermann, Unda Hörner, Inka Parei, Kathrin Röggla, Antje Stelling, and Antje Rávic Strubel. Readers will find many cross-connections and contrasts reflecting the heterogeneous and often conflict-ridden culture in Germany today. Topics include the subversion of gender stereotypes; the merging of 'high' and 'low' culture; the invasion of cultivated spheres by 'wild' nature; post- Wende border crossings between East and West; and the highly charged relationship between lust and disgust

The re-edition of the score of L’Inimico delle donne, an opera buffa by Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785), and its international creation by the Royal Opera of Wallonia, is an opportunity to re-interrogate his biography and his religious and operatic productions, as well as the reception of his works.

As Europe proceeds towards economic and monetary union, fiscal convergence and the prospect of a common money are at the centre of discussion. This volume from the Centre for Economic Policy Research brings together theoretical, applied and historical research on the management of public debt and its implications for financial stability. Gale fills a gap in the literature, using a consistent framework to investigate the welfare economics of public debt, while Calvo and Guidotti analyse the trade-off between indexation and maturity when it comes to minimizing debt service. Confidence crises have become relevant again in view of the high debt ratios in countries such as Belgium, Italy and Ireland. Alesina, Prati and Tabellini develop a formal model of the propagation of a debt run and use it to interpret Italian debt panics. Giavazzi and Pagano concentrate on how inappropriate debt management can precipitate a run on the currency while Makinen and Woodward review a broad sweep of historical experience The efficient design of public debt / Douglas Gale. Discussion / Olivier Jean Blanchard -- Indexation and maturity of government bonds : an exploratory model / Guillermo A. Calvo and Pablo E. Guidotti. Discussion / William H. Branson, Allen Drazen -- Public confidence and debt management : a model and a case study of Italy / Alberto Alesina, Alessandro Prati and Guido Tabellini. Discussion / Mario Draghi, Lars E.O. Svensson -- Confidence crises and public debt management / Francesco Giavazzi and Marco Pagano. Discussion / Enrica Detragiache, Maurice Obstfeld -- Funding crises in the aftermath of World War I / Gail E. Makinen and G. Thomas Woodward. Discussion / Alberto Giovanni, Andrea Ripa Di Meana. The capital levy in theory and practice / Barry Eichengreen. Discussion / David Begg, Vittorio Grilli -- Episodes in the public debt history of the united States / E. Cary Brown. Discussion / Barry P. Bosworth, Giampaolo Galli -- The Italian national debt conversion of 1906 / Marcello de Cecco. Discussion / Richard Portes, Ignazio Visco -- Fear of deficit financing : is it rational? / Marcus Miller, Robert Skidelsky and Paul Weller. Discussion / Giusepe Bertola -- Government domestic debt and the risk of default : a political-economic model of the strategic role of debt / Philippe Aghion and Patrick Dolton. Discussion / Jean-Pierre Danthine, Pietro Reichlin.

I am pleased to present this report containing the papers and proceedings of the seminar on the Social Effects of Economic Adjustment on Arab Countries, held in Abu Dhabi on January 17-18, 1996. It was the eight in a series of joint seminars arranged alternately by the Arab Monetary Fund and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank This seminar was particularly timely because it addressed another important aspect of economic reform that has attracted the attention of economic policymakers, scholars, and others interested in reform issues: the close connection between developing human resources and raising the standard of living, which is considered to be the basic objective of development. This issue also affects popular acceptance of reform programs, which is a necessary condition for the success and sustainability of such programs. The social effects of economic reform programs are a sensitive issue. Social indicators in the Arab world show that large portions of the population suffer many hardships in terms of health care, education, incomes and standard of living, unemployment rates, and inflation. Any economic policy or measure liable to increase the severity of the hardships measured by these indicators must be subjected to careful and objective scrutiny before any judgement can be made concerning its beneficial effects
