    The book offers a combined discussion of the main theoretical, methodological and application issues related to corpus work. Thus, starting from the definition of what is a corpus and why reading a corpus calls for a different methodology from reading a text, the underlying assumptions behind corpus work are discussed. The two main approaches to corpus work are discussed as the "corpus-based" and the "corpus-driven" approach and the theoretical positions underlying them explored in detail. The book adopts and exemplifies the parameters of the corpus-driven approach and posits a new unit of linguistic description defined systematically in the light of corpus evidence. The applications where the corpus-driven approach is exemplified are language teaching and contrastive linguistics. Alternating between practical examples and theoretical evaluation, the reader is led step-by-step to a detailed understanding of the issues involved in corpus work and, at the same time, tempted to explore for himself some of the major applications where a corpus-driven methodology can reveal unprecedented insights into linguistic patterning.     Sprachgesteuerte Dialogsysteme erlauben es, durch natürlichsprachliche Benutzereingaben ein automatisches System zu bedienen. Bei der telefonbasierten Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion treten durch die Kombination von zwei Kommunikationstechnologien neue Kommunikationsprobleme auf, zu deren Lösung neue Konversationsstrategien erarbeitet und alte angepasst werden müssen. Aufgrund von empirischen Benutzeruntersuchungen mit produktiven Dialogsystemen stellt diese Studie linguistische Probleme und Konversationsstrategien dar und zeigt das veränderte Konversationsverhalten der Nutzer auf. Auf dieser Grundlage werden linguistische Optimierungsprinzipien ausgearbeitet, die einerseits die theoretischen Erkenntnisse berücksichtigen und andererseits die Ergebnisse aus der Benutzeruntersuchung mit einbeziehen. Die linguistischen Optimierungsprinzipien zeigen, wie die mündliche Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion basierend auf der aktuellen Spracherkennungstechnologie benutzerfreundlicher und effizienter gestaltet werden kann, wenn linguistische Theorien, insbesondere gesprächsanalytische Ansätze und grundlegendes Nutzerverhalten, berücksichtigt werden. Mittels linguistischer Optimierungsprinzipien wird aufgezeigt, wie die mündliche Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion basierend auf der aktuellen Spracherkennungstechnologie benutzerfreundlicher und effizienter gestaltet werden kann, wenn linguistische Theorien, insbesondere gesprächsanalytische Ansätze und grundlegendes Nutzerverhalten, berücksichtigt werden. Also included is a comprehensive bibliography of Busa, an oral history interview with Busa's translator, and a substantial new chapter that evaluates Busa's contributions and intellectual legacies. The result is a groundbreaking book that is of interest to digital humanists and computational linguists as well as historians of science, technology and the humanities. As the application of computing to cultural heritage becomes ever more ubiquitous, new possibilities for transmitting, shaping, understanding, questioning and even imagining the human record are opening up. Busa is considered by many to be among the pioneers in this field, and his research on projects like the Index Thomisticus is one of the earliest known examples of a humanities project that incorporated automation; it continues to be widely cited and used today.
