Weil alle Beteiligten nur wenig Zeit zum Lesen haben, setzen sich im Netz diejenigen Formate durch, die Übersicht verschaffen. Sie lassen das, worum es nicht geht, einfach weg. Sie reduzieren, in der Sprache der Ökonomen ausgedrückt, die Informationsgewinnungskosten ihrer Benutzer." Anbruch einer neuen Ära, Umbruch, Revolution: Die Expansion der digitalen Kanäle wird seit fast dreißig Jahren als radikaler Neuanfang beschrieben. Aber wieso tauchen in den Prophezeiungen über die Zukunft nach dem Siegeszug der vernetzten Computer so beharrlich Versatzstücke aus der Vergangenheit auf, die fünfzig, hundert Jahre oder noch älter sind? Voraussagen über die digitale Zukunft sind mit Geschichte kontaminiert. Offenbar ist ihnen das aber peinlich. Deswegen reden sie so gerne davon, was durch "das Netz" unwichtig werden wird. Versuchen wir es anders herum. Was ermöglichen einem die neuen Kanäle beim wissenschaftlichen Schreiben, und welches alte Zeug wird durch sie unverzichtbar?

    The 1990s saw a paradigm change in the use of corpus-driven methods in NLP. In the field of multilingual NLP (such as machine translation and terminology mining) this implied the use of parallel corpora. However, parallel resources are relatively scarce: many more texts are produced daily by native speakers of any given language than translated. This situation resulted in a natural drive towards the use of comparable corpora, i.e. non-parallel texts in the same domain or genre. Nevertheless, this research direction has not produced a single authoritative source suitable for researchers and students coming to the field. The proposed volume provides a reference source, identifying the state of the art in the field as well as future trends. The book is intended for specialists and students in natural language processing, machine translation and computer-assisted translation

Our beliefs and perceptions of reality, as well as the choices we make, are to a considerable degree conditioned upon how others see and perceive the world. Due to this reason, our views about the world are very much influenced by those of others, and whenever we need to make a decision we often seek out others' opinions. This is not only true for individuals but also true for organizations. From an application point of view, we naturally want to mine people's opinions and feelings toward any subject matter of interest, which is the task of sentiment analysis. More precisely, sentiment analysis, which is also called opinion mining, is a field of study that aims to extract opinions and sentiments from natural language text using computational methods"-- "Sentiment analysis is the computational study of people's opinions, sentiments, emotions, and attitudes. This fascinating problem is increasingly important in business and society. It offers numerous research challenges but promises insight useful to anyone interested in opinion analysis and social media analysis. This book gives a comprehensive introduction to the topic from a primarily natural-language-processing point of view to help readers understand the underlying structure of the problem and the language constructs that are commonly used to express opinions and sentiments. It covers all core areas of sentiment analysis, includes many emerging themes, such as debate analysis, intention mining, and fake-opinion detection, and presents computational methods to analyze and summarize opinions.     This pioneering book teaches readers to use R within four core analytical areas applicable to the Humanities: networks, text, geospatial data, and images. This book is also designed to be a bridge: between quantitative and qualitative methods, individual and collaborative work, and the humanities and social scientists. Exploring Humanities Data Types with R does not presuppose background programming experience. Early chapters take readers from R set-up to exploratory data analysis (continuous and categorical data, multivariate analysis, and advanced graphics with emphasis on aesthetics and facility). Everything is hands-on: networks are explained using U.S. Supreme Court opinions, and low-level NLP methods are applied to short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The book’s data, code, appendix with 100 basic programming exercises and solutions, and dedicated website are valuable resources for readers. The methodology will have wide application in classrooms and self-study for the humanities, but also for use in linguistics, anthropology, and political science. Outside the classroom, this intersection of humanities and computing is particularly relevant for research and new modes of dissemination across archives, museums and libraries

    This book is about investigating the way people use language in speech and writing. It introduces the corpus-based approach to linguistics, based on analysis of large databases of real language examples stored on computer. Each chapter focuses on a different area of linguistics, including lexicography, grammar, discourse, register variation, language acquisition, and historical linguistics. Example analyses are presented in each chapter to provide concrete descriptions of the research methods and advantages of corpus-based techniques. Ten methodology boxes provide clear and concise explanations of the issues in doing corpus-based research and reading corpus-based studies and there is a useful appendix of resources for corpus-based investigation.
