    The book offers a combined discussion of the main theoretical, methodological and application issues related to corpus work. Thus, starting from the definition of what is a corpus and why reading a corpus calls for a different methodology from reading a text, the underlying assumptions behind corpus work are discussed. The two main approaches to corpus work are discussed as the "corpus-based" and the "corpus-driven" approach and the theoretical positions underlying them explored in detail. The book adopts and exemplifies the parameters of the corpus-driven approach and posits a new unit of linguistic description defined systematically in the light of corpus evidence. The applications where the corpus-driven approach is exemplified are language teaching and contrastive linguistics. Alternating between practical examples and theoretical evaluation, the reader is led step-by-step to a detailed understanding of the issues involved in corpus work and, at the same time, tempted to explore for himself some of the major applications where a corpus-driven methodology can reveal unprecedented insights into linguistic patterning.     This paper describes the thematic variation observed in two newspaper genres - news reports and commentaries - in English and Spanish and studies the influence of genre-specific and language-specific constraints on the observed variation. The study is based on the contrastive analysis of certain clausal and discourse-thematic features in a bilingual comparable corpus consisting of a total of thirty-two texts (sixteen news reports and sixteen commentaries), evenly divided into English and Spanish texts. The analysis shows that despite the language-specific features which can be observed in certain thematic selections at clause level, most of the clausal and discourse thematic differences in the material can be related to the different communicative purposes which characterize these two genres. In view of the similarities and statistically significant differences between the two genres in both languages, it is suggested that genre is the major factor affecting the thematic variation in the bilingual sample, while language-specific differences play a secondary role.     Der vorliegende Band basiert auf Vorträgen, die auf einer vom Seminar für Sprachwissenschaft der Universität Tübingen im Februar 1994 auf dem Schloß Hohentübingen veranstalteten Tagung gehalten wurden. Das Rahmenthema dieser Tagung war die Verfügbarkeit textueller Ressourcen in maschinenlesbarer Form und die Entwicklung von Werkzeugen zur Akquisition lexikalischen Wissens für Lexikographie und Sprachverarbeitungssysteme. Die Themenpalette der Beiträge reicht von der Wechselwirkung zwischen Lexikon und Text aus theoretischer und praxisorientierter Sichtweise über spezifische Probleme bei der Aufbereitung von Wörterbüchern und der Repräsentation lexikalischen und textuellen Wissens bis hin zur Annotierung von Texten mit syntaktischen Kategorien. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden dabei Ressourcen und Werkzeuge für das Deutsche, die durch Beiträge zu anderen europäischen Sprachen in einen internationalen Kontext gestellt werden. This collection of papers stems from a workshop "Lexicon and Text" that was held at the University of Tübingen on February 17-18, 1994. The papers focus on the development of tools for maschine readable dictionaries and for corpus analysis. Of equal importance is the development of theoretical criteria and of practical standards for the representation of textual and lexical information. While most of the papers deal with the applications for German, an international perspective is reflected by the description of the European MULTEXT project and by a Swedish tagset and part-of-speech tagger.
