    Die Absonderung der organisierten Veteranenkultur von der bundesdeutschen Kulturentwicklung spätestens seit den 1970er Jahren, der enge ideologische Rahmen und die Statik der in ihm vorgetragenen Werte, Haltungen und Orientierungsmuster bieten ideale Voraussetzungen, um die an eine klar umgrenzte Sprechergruppe gebundene Konstitution eines kulturellen Gedächtnisses zu rekonstruieren. Die Analyse von Volkstrauertagsreden und Gesprächen mit ihren Verfassern demonstrieren eine geradezu modellhafte Geschlossenheit der in ihnen vorgetragenen Verständigungsmuster, die hier unter dem Forschungsparadigma der Kriegsbewältigungsstrategien untersucht werden The discrepancy between the organized war-veteran culture and the development of overall German culture since the 1970s at the latest, the closely-defined ideological framework involved, and the static nature of the values, attitudes, and guiding principles upheld within that framework provide ideal conditions for the reconstruction of a form of cultural memory associated with a clearly defined group of language users. The analysis of speeches held on Commemoration Day (Volkstrauertag) and of interviews with the writers of those speeches indicates the almost total uniformity of the communicative patterns employed in them. Those patterns are discussed here from the perspective of research on strategies for coming to terms with wartime experiences

    Die isländische Literatur hat heute eine zentrale Funktion für die Identitätsstiftung, der Beginn dieses Identitätdiskurses ist bisher jedoch ungeklärt. Diese Frage greift der Band auf und diskutiert mit dem Blick auf die Literaturproduktion von 1100-1300 mithilfe kulturwissenschaftlicher Gedächtnistheorien die Rolle der Schrift, Erinnerungstechniken und -strategien. Diese zeigen, dass Vergangenheit in Island konträr erinnert wurde und nur ein geringer Bestand an kollektiven Erinnerungen existierte. Kompensiert wurde dieses Desiderat durch die Königssagas, innerhalb derer ein Identitätsdiskurs entwickelt wurde, der Erinnerungskonkurrenzen dialogisch aushandelte. Durch diese Kontrolle über die Historiographie gelang es den Isländern, ihre bedrohte kollektive Identität zu erhalten. Die Entwicklung der Literatur ab 1100 geht daher mit der Aufforderung zu einem unaufhörlichen Erinnern einher, die das kulturelle Gedächtnis der Isländer stets in sich trug. Dr. Laura Sonja Wamhoff promovierte und lehrte an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.

    Toward the end of the Second World War, the works of the great German poet Friedrich Hölderlin were heavily exploited by Nazi propaganda as a source of spiritual strength for the war-weary German people. Once the fires had burned out, scholars attempted to absolve Hölderlin of any responsibility for his wartime (mis)appropriation. Only a few saw that his work would have to be reread in the light of the iniquities that had been said and done in his name. This book examines how Hölderlin was taken up by three such thinkers, among the most influential and controversial of their time: Martin Heidegger, Theodor W. Adorno, and Bertolt Brecht. It extrapolates from their writings on the poet three irreconcilable paradigms of reception - conversation, polemic, and citation - that are of significance for the broader project of working through the tarnished German cultural legacy after 1945. In each case, Hölderlin is examined as the occasion for salvaging that legacy after, from, and in view of the catastrophe. This first full-length study of Hölderlin's postwar reception will be of interest to students and scholars working in the fields of German literature, European philosophy, the politics of cultural memory, and critical theory.     In recent years, the discourse of memory - and of German memory culture in particular - has become increasingly concerned with questions of the archive. An archive can refer to a physical place, the material found there, or the system that orders this material; in its broadest sense, it might refer to something public (records housed in a municipal building), or something private (photographs in afamily album). The material and documentary qualities of the archive confer on it an authenticating function attributed only cautiously to memory, but theories of the archive have questioned the status of material, documentary vestiges of the past. Memory and the archive are inextricably linked, but how does this affect the mediation of the past? This volume explores the changing relationship between memory and the archive in German-language literature and culture since 1945. Contributions approach this topic from a range of perspectives (film, visual culture, urban culture, digital technology, as well as literature) and offer illuminating studies of Harun Farocki, Anselm Kiefer, Thomas Demand, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Jürgen Fuchs, Stefan Wolter, and Sasa Stanisic.     The concept of Heimat with its seemingly pre- or anti-modern connotations of rootedness in a place of origin is central to a critical understanding of German history and culture. This anthology is the first to examine cultural manifestations of Heimat by giving special consideration to issues of memory and space. The contributions to this volume challenge static notions of place often associated with Heimat. Instead, they explore the social and cultural production of places of belonging as they emerge in literary and visual narratives ranging from 1800 to 2000 and beyond.     Toward the end of the Second World War, the works of the great German poet Friedrich Hölderlin were heavily exploited by Nazi propaganda as a source of spiritual strength for the war-weary German people. Once the fires had burned out, scholars attempted to absolve Hölderlin of any responsibility for his wartime (mis)appropriation. Only a few saw that his work would have to be reread in the light of the iniquities that had been said and done in his name. This book examines how Hölderlin was taken up by three such thinkers, among the most influential and controversial of their time: Martin Heidegger, Theodor W. Adorno, and Bertolt Brecht. It extrapolates from their writings on the poet three irreconcilable paradigms of reception - conversation, polemic, and citation - that are of significance for the broader project of working through the tarnished German cultural legacy after 1945. In each case, Hölderlin is examined as the occasion for salvaging that legacy after, from, and in view of the catastrophe. This first full-length study of Hölderlin's postwar reception will be of interest to students and scholars working in the fields of German literature, European philosophy, the politics of cultural memory, and critical theory. Due to amplified mobility and communication as well as Europe?s changing institutional structure, such memories become increasingly transcultural, crossing cultural and political borders. This book brings together in-depth researched case studies of memory transmission and reception in different types of media, including films, literature, museums, political debate printed and digital media, as well as studies of personal and public reactions.

    As sites of continual change and transformation, cities are fundamentally forgetful places. Yet at the same time, urban areas are also homes to museums and archives that collect and exhibit the past-a key cultural, political, and economic activity. This book looks at that paradox through the example of Berlin to see how the city has responded to challenges to memory created by rapid changes in politics, economics, society, and the built environment, ultimately arguing that the recovery of the experience of time is central to the practices of an emergent memory culture in the contemporary city.
