In a time when many voices have joined to predict the death of print, books continue to resurface in new and unexpected ways. From the proliferation of "shelfies" to Jane Austen-themed leggings and from decorative pillows printed with beloved book covers to bookwork sculptures exhibited in prestigious collections, books are everywhere and are not just for reading. Writers have caught up with this trend: many contemporary novels depict books as central characters or fetishize paper and print thematically and formally. In Bookishness, Jessica Pressman examines the new status of the book as object and symbol. She explores the rise of "bookishness" as an identity and an aesthetic strategy that proliferates from store-window décor to experimental writing. Ranging from literature to kitsch objects, stop-motion animation films to book design, Pressman considers the multivalent meanings of books in contemporary culture. Books can represent shelter from-or a weapon against-the dangers of the digital; they can act as memorials and express a sense of loss. Examining the works of writers such as Jonathan Safran Foer, Jennifer Egan, Mark Z. Danielewski, and Leanne Shapton, Pressman illuminates the status of the book as a fetish object and its significance for understanding contemporary fakery. Bringing together media studies, book history, and literary criticism, Bookishness explains how books still give meaning to our lives in a digital age"--

    Biographical note: Christina Lembrecht, München. Books for All! Bücher für alle! Livres pour tous! ¡Libros para todos!: This was the slogan of UNESCO’s worldwide efforts to improve access to books. In the present work, the author conducts case studies of book promotion projects, and evaluates their impact. At the same time, the examination raises fundamental questions about the societal role of the book. It offers a global comparison of differently structured book markets and international book cultures. Bücher für alle verfügbar und zugänglich zu machen, war oberste Zielsetzung der Buchförderungsprogramme der UNESCO. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Maßnahmen, die die UNESCO weltweit zur Verbesserung der Produktions- und Distributionsstrukturen des Buches durchführte, und geht Fragen nach der Funktion des Buches in der Gesellschaft nach. Die Arbeitleistet damit einen Beitrag zur internationalen Buchhandelsgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. Es entsteht so eine neue Form des kollektiven Schreibens, bei dem es nicht mehr entscheidend ist, welcher Autor diesen oder jenen Teil beigesteuert hat. Clemens Setz beschäftigt sich in seinen Vorlesungen mit der Bedeutung des Materials für das literarische Schreiben und der Funktion und Überlieferung von Literatur. Die Zukunft, so wird beim Lesen von Clemens Setz‘ erster Poetikvorlesung Strahlenkatzen und Literatur deutlich, ist so grundsätzlich unverfügbar, wie kaum etwas anderes in unserer durchtechnisierten, durchdachten und durchleuchteten Welt. Literatur funktioniert dabei wie eine kleine Zeitkapsel, die sich selbständig macht und durch eine raumzeitliche Passage in die Zukunft gleitet.

Responding to Franco Moretti's call for "distant reading" and modeling a range of innovative approaches to literary-historical analysis informed by theburgeoning field of digital humanities, it asks what happens when we shift our focus from the one to the many, from the work to the network.     Invoking Goethe's name has become fashionable again. With new methods and technologies of reading threatening to render literature virtual and insubstantial, we have the sense that "Goethe's ghosts" - the otherwise neglected voices and traditions that, finding their most trenchant expression in Goethe, inform the Western storehouse of literature - can show us long-forgotten dimensions of literature. Inspired by the distinguished Goethe scholar Jane Brown, whose life's work has called attention to the allegorical modes haunting the mimetic forms that dominate modern literature, the contributors to this volume take a rich variety of approaches to Goethe: cultural studies, history of the book, semiotics, deconstruction, colonial studies, feminism, childhood studies, and eco-criticism. The persistence, omnipresence, and modalities of the "ghosts" they find suggest that more than influence or standards is at issue here. Goethe's work informs current debates on nineteenth-century nationalism, while his Faust increasingly serves to express contemporary culture's anxiety about new technologies. The stubborn reappearance of these revenants testifies to more fundamental issues concerning the status of literature and the task of the reader. As the contributors demonstrate, these questions acquire renewed urgency in writers as diverse as Hegel, Adorno, Benn, Droste-Hülshoff, and Nietzsche. The Medieval Manuscript Book redresses this by focusing on aspects of the medieval book in its cultural situations. Written by experts in the study of the handmade book before print, this volume combines bibliographical expertise with broader insights into the theory and praxis of manuscript study in areas from bibliography to social context, linguistics to location, and archaeology to conservation.     This book was first published in 2006. Learning to read in medieval Germany meant learning to read and understand Latin as well as the pupils' own language. The teaching methods used in the medieval Abbey of St Gall survive in the translations and commentaries of the monk, scholar and teacher Notker Labeo (c.950–1022). Notker's pedagogic method, although deeply rooted in classical and monastic traditions, demonstrates revolutionary innovations that include providing translations in the pupils' native German, supplying structural commentary in the form of simplified word order and punctuation, and furnishing special markers that helped readers to perform texts out loud. Anna Grotans examines this unique interplay between orality and literacy in Latin and Old High German, and illustrates her study with many examples from Notker's manuscripts.
