    The Joseph Johnson letterbook' is the first scholarly edition of the correspondence of the influential Romantic-era publisher Joseph Johnson (1738-1809). Though those in Romantic-era studies know who Joseph Johnson was and why he mattered, but this adventurous, influential publisher and bookseller is not as widely known outside the field. Moreover, he has tended to appear in Romantic studies chiefly as a reference point in work on other figures. 'The Joseph Johnson letterbook', the first scholarly edition of his correspondence, offers a long overdue correction. Working with writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Joseph Priestly, Elizabeth Hamilton, William Blake, Charlotte Smith, and William Godwin (among many others), Johnson was the dynamic center of the London dissenting community, publishing and selling all manner of writing, all the while hosting parties and suppers that were sites of vital conversation. 'The Joseph Johnson letterbook' brings into print for the first time over two hundred of Johnson's letters from archives around the world

    In Die Rifāīya Boris Liebrenz explores the book culture of Ottoman Syria (16th to 19th century), using the only surviving Damascene private library of the time as a vantage point. He asks about the production and transmission of knowledge as well as the social background of the reading audience in a manuscript age. Scholarship on Arabic libraries has often focussed on the medieval period and relied nearly exclusively on literary accounts. This is the first book-length study that focuses on a single region in the Ottoman period and systematically uses the vast number of surviving manuscripts as a documentary source by means of the notes left by their readers and possessors.     "By way of a case study of one of the oldest French book agencies, Agence Hoffman, this book analyzes the role played by French literary agents in the importation of US fiction and literature into France in the years following World War II. It sheds light on the material conditions of the circulation of texts across the Atlantic between 1944 and 1955, exploring the fine mechanisms of agents' negotiations which allowed texts, and ideas, to cross borders. While providing comparative insights into the history of publishing in France and in the United States in the immediate aftermath of the war, this book aims at foregrounding the role of the book agent, an all-too often neglected intermediary in the field of book history. Grounded in archival work conducted both in France and the United States, this study is based on previously unexamined correspondence.     This book considers what was written, printed, published, owned and sometimes read in Ireland between 1680 and 1784. It seeks to evaluate the ephemeral and what has subsequently vanished in order to challenge some common assumptions about the nature and impact of print during the period. It is based on the surviving texts and the letters and comments of contemporaries. Peopled with authors, publishers and readers, it offers a novel approach to the history of the book in Ireland. Also, it places print in the mental and material cultures of the eighteenth century, and among the efforts to subordinate Ireland more firmly to England. It suggests how enthusiastically Ireland plunged into the cultural currents of the eighteenth century - cosmopolitan rather than introverted and insular

    "This volume provides the first transnational overview of the relationship between translation and the book trade in early modern Europe. Following an introduction to the theories and practices of translation in early modern Europe, and to the role played by translated books in driving and defining the trade in printed books, each chapter focuses on a different aspect of translated-book history - language learning, audience, printing, marketing, and censorship - across several national traditions. This study touches on a wide range of early modern figures who played myriad roles in the book world; many of them also performed these roles in different countries and languages. Topics treated include printers' sensitivity to audience demand; paratextual and typographical techniques for manipulating perception of translated texts; theories of readership that travelled across borders; and the complex interactions between foreign-language teachers, teaching manuals, immigration, diplomacy, and exile"--

In the narratives in vernacular prose printed in the Renaissance, form created meaning: the printing choices established links between texts, the narrative paragraph took the place of linguistic unity, and division into chapters conditioned reading practices. The printing policies of the publisher-booksellers of the Palace thus participated in the birth and promotion of a new genre: the French récit sentimental. The successive editions of the Angoysses douloureuses qui procèdent d'amours, considered the first récit sentimental composed in the French language, invite us even to think that this tale, far from being the work of a single female author (traditionally thought to be Hélisenne de Crenne), is rather the fruit of intertextual manipulations carried out in the workshop of the printers of Janot's circle in order to give birth to a best-seller regarded above all as a printed item responding to the expectations of a new public." -- Publisher website
