The editors brought together experts from a variety of disciplines. While it is generally agreed that information reduces uncertainties and that the ability to store it safely is of vital importance, these authors are open to different meanings of “information”: computer science considers the bit as the information block; neuroscience emphasizes the importance of information as sensory inputs that are processed and transformed in the brain; theories in psychology focus more on individual learning and on the acquisition of knowledge; and finally sociology looks at how interpersonal processes within groups or society itself come to the fore. The book will be of value to researchers and students in the areas of information theory, artificial intelligence, and computational neuroscience

    This book is based on contributions to the Seventh European Summer School on Language and Speech Communication that was held at KTH in Stockholm, Sweden, in July of 1999 under the auspices of the European Language and Speech Network (ELSNET). The topic of the summer school was "Multimodality in Language and Speech Systems" (MiLaSS). The issue of multimodality in interpersonal, face-to-face communication has been an important research topic for a number of years. With the increasing sophistication of computer-based interactive systems using language and speech, the topic of multimodal interaction has received renewed interest both in terms of human-human interaction and human-machine interaction. Nine lecturers contri­ buted to the summer school with courses on specialized topics ranging from the technology and science of creating talking faces to human-human communication, which is mediated by computer for the handicapped. Eight of the nine lecturers are represented in this book. The summer school attracted more than 60 participants from Europe, Asia and North America representing not only graduate students but also senior researchers from both academia and industry

    The genesis of this volume was the participation of the editors in an ACMlSIGIR (Association for Computing Machinery/Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval) workshop entitled "Beyond Word Relations" (Hetzler, 1997). This workshop examined a number of relationship types with significance for information retrieval beyond the conventional topic-matching relationship. From this shared participation came the idea for an edited volume on relationships, with chapters to be solicited from researchers and practitioners throughout the world. Ultimately, one volume became two volumes. The first volume, Relationships in the Organization of Knowledge (Bean & Green, 200 I), examines the role of relationships in knowledge organization theory and practice, with emphasis given to thesaural relationships and integration across systems, languages, cultures, and disciplines. This second volume examines relationships in a broader array of contexts. The two volumes should be seen as companions, each informing the other. As with the companion volume, we are especially grateful to the authors who willingly accepted challenges of space and time to produce chapters that summarize extensive bodies of research. The value of the volume clearly resides in the quality of the individual chapters. In naming this volume The Semantics of Relationships: An Interdisciplinary Perspective, we wanted to highlight the fact that relationships are not just empty connectives. Relationships constitute important conceptual units and make significant contributions to meaning

    The central task of a future-oriented computational linguistics is the development of cognitive machines which humans can freely talk with in their respective natural language. In the long run, this task will ensure the development of a functional theory of language, an objective method of verification, and a wide range of practical applications. Natural communication requires not only verbal processing, but also non-verbal perception and action. Therefore the content of this textbook is organized as a theory of language for the construction of talking robots. The main topic is the mechanism of natural language communication in both the speaker and the hearer. The content is divided into four parts: Theory of Language, Theory of Grammar, Morphology and Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics. The book contains more than 700 exercises for reviewing key ideas and important problems. In the Second Edition, changes are most noticeable in Chapters 22-24, which have been completely rewritten. They present a declarative outline for programming the semantic and pragmatic interpretation of natural language communication. The presentation is now simpler and more comprehensive. It is defined as a formal fragment and includes a new control structure, an analysis of spatio-temporal infer-encing, and an analysis of internal matching based on the notion of a task analysis. Examples and explanations which were contained in the old versions of Chapters 22-24 have been moved to the new Appendix. A schematic summary and a conclusion have been added as well

    Verbmobil is the result of eight years of intensive research in a large speech-to-speech translation project, executed by a consortium comprising nineteen academic and four industrial partners. The system that was developed by more than 100 researchers and engineers handles dialogs in three business-oriented domains, with translation between three languages: German, English, and Japanese. Verbmobil deals with spontaneous speech, which includes realistic repair phenomena, and uses deep semantic analysis to recognize a speaker's slips and to translate what he tried to say rather than what he actually said. After more than 400 single publications, this book gives the first comprehensive overview of the results of this unique and seminal project in human language technology. The theoretical and practical foundations from signal processing to language understanding are described in detail. The system anatomy is presented and the components for multilingual and robust speech processing, prosodic analysis, parsing, semantic analysis, discourse understanding, translation, generation and speech synthesis are discussed. Contributions by leading scientists in speech and language technology look at the component technologies that make Verbmobil the most advanced speech-to-speech translation system worldwide and a landmark project in the history of natural language processing

    Die exponentielle Beschleunigung der Miniaturisierung und der Leistungsfähigkeit von Computern sowie die immer größere Ausdehnung des Netzwerks, das diese Computer auf der ganzen Welt verbindet, führt zu neuen Herausforderungen, mit denen sich Gesetzgeber und Rechtswissenschaft auseinandersetzen müssen. Dies betrifft insbesondere die Netzneutralität, sowie die zunehmende Nutzung „künstlicher Intelligenz“ im Zuge der sogenannten „Vierten Industriellen Revolution“, wobei auch der Datenschutz der Entwicklung von Massenüberwachungsinstrumenten gegenübersteht. Die Idee des SIPE-Kongresses, dessen Ergebnisse veröffentlicht werden, war es, diese neuen Entwicklungen unter Juristen zu analysieren und soweit wie möglich zu diskutieren, und zwar über das Datenschutzrecht hinausgehend, ohne dabei dessen Neuerungen zu vernachlässigen. The exponential acceleration of the miniaturisation and processing capabilities of computers, together with an ever-widening extension of the network that connects computers around the world have generated new issues for lawmakers and legal science: net neutrality, protection against growing and pervasive cybercrime and, as part of the so-called ‘4th Industrial Revolution’, increasing use of artificial intelligence, whereas data protection is facing the development of mass surveillance tools. The idea of the SIPE Congress, whose proceedings are published here, was for lawyers to study and, as far as possible, discuss these new developments by going beyond but without neglecting the novelties of data protection law. Und doch stellen beide verblüffend ähnliche Fragen zu der Integrität des Menschen im Angesicht einer künstlichen Intelligenz. Die humanoiden Maschinen fungieren als Reflexionsgegenstände, an denen abgelesen werden kann, dass sich das Wesen des Menschen immer erst in einem allgegenwärtigen Geflecht aus Machtbeziehungen und aus dem Nachahmen normativer Verhaltensmuster konturiert. Diese Machtverhältnisse und performativen Akte werden in dieser Arbeit unter anderem durch einen Rückbezug auf die Konzepte des Panoptismus und der Performativität näher erörtert. Posthumane Subjekte werden somit gleichermaßen als Gefahr wie auch Erhellung für das menschliche Wesen verhandelt. Almost 200 years have passed since the publication of E.T.A. Hoffmann's Der Sandmann and Alex Garland's science fiction film Ex Machina. And yet both ask amazingly similar questions about human integrity in the face of artificial intelligence. The humanoid machines act as objects of reflection, from which it can be seen that the essence of human beings is always only contoured in an omnipresent network of power relations and by imitating normative behavior patterns. These power relations and performative acts are discussed in more detail in this work, among other things, by referring back to the concepts of panoptism and performativity. Posthuman subjects are thus negotiated as both a danger and an enlightenment for the human being.
