    Il volume indaga le ricerche tra scienza e arte di Leonardo da Vinci attraverso lo strumento del disegno, partendo dal nucleo di opere autografe di Leonardo conservati alla Biblioteca Reale di Torino, che comprende tredici disegni acquistati dal re Carlo Alberto nel 1840, e il celebre Codice sul volo degli uccelli, donato nel 1893 da Teodoro Sabachnikoff al re Umberto I. Uno straordinario insieme di opere databili all'incirca tra il 1480 e il 1515, diverse per soggetto e per ispirazione, ma in grado di documentare l'attività di Leonardo dalla giovinezza alla piena maturità. Alcuni disegni sono in relazione con opere note e celebrate del maestro: i nudi per la Battaglia d'Anghiari, i cavalli per i monumenti Sforza e Trivulzio, lo straordinario studio per l'angelo della Vergine delle Rocce, noto come Volto di fanciulla. Oltre all'unicum, il celeberrimo Ritratto di vecchio, ritenuto l'autoritratto di Leonardo. Il volume, attraverso i saggi e il ricco repertorio iconografico che comprende importanti confronti con le esperienze di artisti coevi, intende restituire il senso, l'origine e la peculiarità del lavoro di Leonardo, in occasione delle celebrazioni per i cinquecento anni dalla sua morte.
