Für alle, die Berlin bereits gut kennen oder mit einem anderen Blick durch die Stadt gehen möchten: Das Interessanteste ist in Biographien und in den Geschichten von Plätzen und Straßen verborgen. Das außergewöhnlich sorgfältig gestaltete Buch des bekannten Schauspielers Hanns Zischler ist eine Sammlung von kleineren Betrachtungen, mit klarem Standpunkt und viel Genauigkeit erarbeitet. Es sucht biographische Bezüge z.B. im Leben und Werk der Dichterin Gertrud Kolmar, weiß viel von der Vor- und Nachkriegsgeschichte der Stadt zu erzählen, beschreibt einen Spaziergang mit einem professionellen Straßenbegeher ebenso wie die lange Fahrt mit dem Bus 104 quer durch die Stadt. Dabei treten verborgene Schönheiten und vergessene Lebensspuren ebenso zutage wie Bau- und Planungssünden, die einem aus Gewohnheit kaum mehr auffallen. Kein Reiseführer und kein Hochglanz-Bildband über Berlin! Dafür eine Einladung zum Suchen nach den unbekannten Gesichtern der Metropole. Ab mittlere Bibliotheken für alle Lesenden, die sich von dem Motto des Autors "Learning by walking" zum genauen Hinschauen inspirieren lassen mögen - im Buch wie auf Reisen! (Susanne Brandt) Seit gut vierzig Jahren bewegt sich Hanns Zischler fast ausschließlich zu Fuß, mit dem Fahrrad oder der S-Bahn durch Berlin. Kein Wunder, dass er einen ganz eigenen Blick auf die Stadt und ihre Geschichte entwickelt hat. Da ist vor allem eine Beobachtung: Zu der Stadt, die einst auf Sand und Sumpf gebaut wurde, gehört seit je eine gewisse Mischung aus Ausdehnungshunger, Größenwahn und Lust an der Selbstzerstörung. Oder wie anders soll man es bezeichnen, wenn den Plänen des Architekten Schinkel fast alle vorhandenen barocken Ensembles Unter den Linden zum Opfer fallen? Oder die Bürogemeinschaft Hitler/Speer und der Germania-Plan: Wäre der Krieg den beiden nicht zuvorgekommen, hätte in ihrem Auftrag die Abrissbirne fast genauso schlimm gewütet. Hanns Zischler entführt seine Leser in ein weniger bekanntes Berlin, wenn er seine Spaziergänge mit denen des Stadtgeografen Friedrich Leyden, der Dichterin Gertrud Kolmar und des Passfälschers Oskar Huth verschränkt und dank der Aufzeichnungen der drei Stadtwanderer ein untergegangenes Berlin aufspürt. Er macht den Geist und die Geschichte der Stadt spürbar, wenn er auf den Teufelsberg im Grunewald wandert, an dessen Erde man nur leicht graben muss, um auf Scherben, Zinkblech und Klinker zu stoßen – Reste von Berliner Mietshäusern. Wer weiß schon, dass im Inneren des Teufelsbergs ein noch viel größeres Geheimnis schlummert? „Nicht schon wieder, denkt man zunächst. Ist Berlin denn nicht schon oft genug gepriesen oder beschimpft worden? Dass dieses Buch ... trotzdem ein großer Gewinn ist, liegt an Hanns Zischler, seinem stets originellen Autor. Gleichberechtigt hat er hier lakonische Fotos, Essays und historische Zeugnisse nebeneinandergestellt. Vor allem aber hat er sich, in Baudelaire'scher Flaneur-Tradition, Orte erwandert, die man gemeinhin ausblendet oder nur flüchtig wahrnimmt“ (Literaturen, Frühjahr 2013)

Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund (GBV)

Lafayette Park, an affordable middle-class residential area in downtown Detroit, is home to the largest collection of buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the world. Today, it is one of Detroit's most racially integrated and economically stable neighborhoods, although it is surrounded by evidence of a city in financial distress. Through interviews with and essays by residents; reproductions of archival material; and new photographs by Karin Jobst, Vasco Roma, and Corine Vermeulen, and previously unpublished photographs by documentary filmmaker Janine Debanné, Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies examines the way that Lafayette Park residents confront and interact with this unique modernist environment. Lafayette Park has not received the level of international attention that other similar projects by Mies have. This may be due in part to its location in Detroit, a city whose most positive qualities are often overlooked in the media. This book is a reaction against the way that iconic modernist architecture is often represented. Whereas other writers may focus on the design intentions of the architect, authors Aubert, Cavar and Chandani seek to show the organic and idiosyncratic ways that the people who live in Lafayette Park actually use the architecture and how this experience, in turn, affects their everyday lives. While there are many publications about abandoned buildings in Detroit and about the city's prosperous past, this book is about a remarkable part of the city as it exists today, in the twenty-first century
