    The Story of the Bichitra Project -- Tagore's Text -- The Bengali Writing System: Fonts and OCR -- Images and Scanning -- Manuscripts and Their Transcription -- Data Management and Hyperbibliography -- Search Engine and Hyperconcordance -- Collation: Prabhed and its Predecessors.- Planning the Website -- Beyond Bichitra -- Appendix.   This book documents the creation of the Bichitra Online Tagore Variorum, a publicly accessible database of Rabindranath Tagore's complete works in Bengali and English totaling some 140,000 pages of primary material. Chapters cover innovative aspects of the site, all replicable in other projects: a hyperbibliography; a search engine and hyperconcordance working across the database; and a unique collation program comparing variant texts at three levels. There are also chapters on the special problems of processing manuscripts, and on planning the website. Early chapters take readers through the history of the project, an overview of Tagore’s works, and the Bengali writing system with the challenges of adapting it to electronic form. The name Bichitra, meaning "various" in Bengali, alludes both to the great variety of Tagore’s works and to their various stages of composition. Beyond their literary excellence, they are notable for their sheer quantity, the number of variant forms of a great many items, and their afterlife in translation, often the poet’s own. Seldom if ever has the same writer revised his material and recast it across genres on such a scale. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in 1913. By its value-added presentation of this range of material, Bichitra can be a model for future databases covering an author’s complete works or other major corpus of texts. It offers vastly expanded access to Tagore’s writings, and enables new kinds of research including computational text analysis. The “book of the website” shows in technical and human terms how researchers with interests in the arts, literature and technology can collaborate on cultural informatics projects

Essential reading for both computer scientists and linguistic researchers.Linguistic annotation is an increasingly important activity in the field of computational linguistics because of its critical role in the development of language models for natural language processing applications. Part one of this book covers all phases of the linguistic annotation process, from annotation scheme design and choice of representation format through both the manual and automatic annotation process, evaluation, and iterative improvement of annotation accuracy. The second part of the book includes case studies of annotation projects across the spectrum of linguistic annotation types, including morpho-syntactic tagging, syntactic analyses, a range of semantic analyses (semantic roles, named entities, sentiment and opinion), time and event and spatial analyses, and discourse level analyses including discourse structure, co-reference, etc. Each case study addresses the various phases and processes discussed in the chapters of part one

Also included is a comprehensive bibliography of Busa, an oral history interview with Busa's translator, and a substantial new chapter that evaluates Busa's contributions and intellectual legacies. The result is a groundbreaking book that is of interest to digital humanists and computational linguists as well as historians of science, technology and the humanities. As the application of computing to cultural heritage becomes ever more ubiquitous, new possibilities for transmitting, shaping, understanding, questioning and even imagining the human record are opening up. Busa is considered by many to be among the pioneers in this field, and his research on projects like the Index Thomisticus is one of the earliest known examples of a humanities project that incorporated automation; it continues to be widely cited and used today. Busa published more than 350 academic articles and shorter pieces in numerous languages, but despite the unquestionable importance of his early work for understanding the history and development of fields like humanities computing and computational linguistics, a large part of his canon and thinking remained inaccessible or difficult to access until this book

The editors brought together experts from a variety of disciplines. While it is generally agreed that information reduces uncertainties and that the ability to store it safely is of vital importance, these authors are open to different meanings of “information”: computer science considers the bit as the information block; neuroscience emphasizes the importance of information as sensory inputs that are processed and transformed in the brain; theories in psychology focus more on individual learning and on the acquisition of knowledge; and finally sociology looks at how interpersonal processes within groups or society itself come to the fore. The book will be of value to researchers and students in the areas of information theory, artificial intelligence, and computational neuroscience

    This book documents the creation of the Bichitra Online Tagore Variorum, a publicly accessible database of Rabindranath Tagore's complete works in Bengali and English totaling some 140,000 pages of primary material. Chapters cover innovative aspects of the site, all replicable in other projects: a hyperbibliography; a search engine and hyperconcordance working across the database; and a unique collation program comparing variant texts at three levels. There are also chapters on the special problems of processing manuscripts, and on planning the website. Early chapters take readers through the history of the project, an overview of Tagore’s works, and the Bengali writing system with the challenges of adapting it to electronic form. The name Bichitra, meaning "various" in Bengali, alludes both to the great variety of Tagore’s works and to their various stages of composition. Beyond their literary excellence, they are notable for their sheer quantity, the number of variant forms of a great many items, and their afterlife in translation, often the poet’s own. Seldom if ever has the same writer revised his material and recast it across genres on such a scale. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in 1913. By its value-added presentation of this range of material, Bichitra can be a model for future databases covering an author’s complete works or other major corpus of texts. It offers vastly expanded access to Tagore’s writings, and enables new kinds of research including computational text analysis.     Dieses Lehrbuch für die digitalen Geisteswissenschaften vermittelt in der 2. Auflage fundierte theoretische und praktische Kenntnisse, die für ein effizientes und selbst­ständiges Arbeiten in den Digital Humanities notwendig sind. Das Ziel ist ein allgemeines Verständnis der Konzepte und verschiedenen Softwaresysteme, denn nur durch die Verbindung von geisteswissenschaftlichen Kenntnissen mit informationstechnischer Kompetenz lassen sich digitale Medien gezielt in allen klassischen Disziplinen der Geisteswissenschaften einsetzen. Praktische Aufgaben sowie ein größeres Projekt, wie es im beruflichen Alltag vorkommt, zeigen die Umsetzung in konkreten Projekten.   Der Inhalt Fortgeschrittene Web-Basics (HTML, CSS, JS, php, AJAX) - Sicherheitsaspekte für Webprojekte - Markupsprachen am Beispiel von XML (DTD, Schema, XSLT, SVG) - TEI - Einführung in die Bildbearbeitung - Informationssysteme (GIS) Die Zielgruppen - Studierende im Bereich Digital Humanities/Medieninformatik - Fachkräfte im Bereich Digitale Geisteswissenschaften/Digital Humanities/eHumanities (Bibliotheken, Archive, Museen, Institute und Einrichtungen des kulturellen Erbes)   Die Autorin Susanne Kurz ist Lecturer an der Universität zu Köln.
