This study is covering Austrian literature and mental life from the beginning of the 19th century to the Wiener Moderne. Since the foundation of the Austrian monarchy in 1804 it needs a legitimation. The numerous peoples need a symbol of identification. It is supposed to be the traditional ideal of the 'Habsburgischer Kosmos'. The entry chapter is analysing Freiherr von Hormayr's work. It is baroque ethical and religious traditions, he is recurring to. They are abused in regard of Metternich's aim of restauration. This study deals with the changes of the meaning of metaphysical thought during the period of the 19th century. The break-down of religious meaning is compensated by the creation of new systems of meaning. This is, in short, a possible definition of 'Minimalisierung'. It means the restitution of lost totality in everyday-life's subjects by its nobilitation. This study includes the works of Grillparzer, Stifter, the Wiener Volkstheater and The Wiener Moderne. As the break-down of for example religious perceptivity is not only an Austrian phenomenon, this study sometimes confronts Austrian developments with developments of the rest of europe. ; published
