Ever since Karl Schmitts verdict of Kleist's Hermannschlacht as "the greatest partisan poetry of all Times", the play has been read as a call for total war in the name of Germany. It is only recently that the play has not been seen as propagandistic, but as a lesson of how propaganda works. The article shows that the Hermannsschlacht systematically replaces the metaphorical field of war by that of hunting. As a consequence, the figure of the human is bestialized. This bestialization is most evident in the two prominent female figures, Thusnelda, queen and wife, and Hally, virgin child and daughter. Thusnelda is first used by the king, her husband, as a sexual decoy only to be sicked as "reißende Bestie" onto her lover, in a scenario reminiscent of the ad bestiam in the Roman circus. HaIly is hunted down by a pack of randy dogs, to be "aufgebrochen" by her father and cut into pieces by the father of the country, Herrmann. ; Die Herrmannsschlacht ist als Manifest des Partisanenkampfes gelesen worden, in dem das hehre Ziel - Befreiung und Einigung Deutschlands - jedes Mittel rechtfertige. Erst in den letzten Jahren ist das Drama nicht mehr als Propagandastück gelesen, sondern als „Lehrstück in Sachen Propaganda“ erkannt worden: Herrmann ist nicht Kleist). Im Folgenden soll deshalb nicht interessieren, was Kleist ideologischen Mutmaßungen zufolge mit seinem Stück wollte, sondern was sein Stück tut. Schwarz auf weiß, lautet [die] Gegenthese [der Autorin], wird die Begründung der deutschen Nation in der Herrmannsschlacht als das verworfene Zerrbild Roms lesbar. In der „Posse“, welche die Herrmannsschlacht ist, erscheint Deutschland als die verzerrte Fratze Roms. Deutschland entpuppt sich als nichts anderes als eine Perversion des Römischen - oder eben des Französischen. Die Herrmannsschlacht setzt keinen urdeutschen Moment, sondern die Unhintergehbarkeit der translatio Romae in Szene.
