Scandinavian Crime Fiction is the first English-language study of crime fiction written in Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. It will delight and challenge readers, as it helps them understand more deeply the work of such prominent writers as Henning Mankell, Stieg Larsson, Anne Holt, Arnaldur Indriðason, Leena Lehtolainen, and Håkan Nesser, among others. Themes explored include the changing crime genre, the role of place and locale in Scandinavian crime fiction, and political and social debates in which crime fiction has participated

"In 1854, the originator of Viennese operetta, Franz von Suppé, created the music for a new play by Leonhart Wohlmuth. It is part of a forgotten art form where the music underlines and accompanies the action on stage in a similar way to a soundtrack for a film. While the music works very well in the present day, the real challenge is to modernise the script to make it relevant and interesting for a modern audience. Originally written in early 19th century German, the script sounds outdated and received a less than positive reception at its original outing. Its dialogue is more in keeping with Opera and required significant work to make it palatable to a contemporary audience. The project on which this book is based maintained the music by Suppé as indicated in the manuscript score, while translating and adapting the German script by Wohlmuth into a version more interesting in the present day"--

"English itinerant players toured in northern continental Europe from the 1580s. Their repertories initially consisted of plays from the London theatre, but over time the players learnt German, and German players joined the companies, as a result of which the dramatic texts were adapted and translated into German. A number of German plays now extant have a direct connection to Shakespeare. Four of them are so close in plot, character constellation and at times even language to their English originals that they can legitimately be considered versions of Shakespeare's plays. This volume offers fully edited translations of two such texts: Der Bestrafte Brudermord / Fratricide Punished (Hamlet) and Romio und Julieta / Romio and Julieta (Romeo and Juliet). With full scholarly apparatus, these texts are of seminal interest to all scholars of Shakespeare's texts, and their transmission over time in print, translation and performance"--

"Fairy-tale adaptations are ubiquitous in modern popular culture, but readers and scholars alike may take for granted the many voices and traditions folded into today's tales. In Fairy Tales Transformed?: Twenty-First-Century Adaptations and the Politics of Wonder, accomplished fairy-tale scholar Cristina Bacchilega traces what she terms a "fairy-tale web" of multivocal influences in modern adaptations, asking how tales have been changed by and for the early twenty-first century. Dealing mainly with literary and cinematic adaptations for adults and young adults, Bacchilega investigates the linked and yet divergent social projects these fairy tales imagine, their participation and competition in multiple genre and media systems, and their relation to a politics of wonder that contests a naturalized hierarchy of Euro-American literary fairy tale over folktale and other wonder genres." ... "Bringing together scholars from around the world, International Faust Studies examines questions of adaptation, reception and translation centering on Faust discourse in a diversity of cultural contexts, including the Chinese, Japanese, Indian, African, Brazilian and Canadian, as well as the European, British and American. It broadens the field by including studies of lesser known or neglected Faust discourse, including the translation of Goethe's Faust recently attributed to Coleridge, in addition to the canonical."--Jacket
