    "In studies of Holocaust representation and memory, scholars of literature and culture traditionally have focused on particular national contexts. At the same time, recent work has brought the Holocaust into the arena of the transnational, leading to a crossroads between localized and global understandings of Holocaust memory. Further complicating the issue are generational shifts that occur with the passage of time, and which render memory and representations of the Holocaust ever more mediated, commodified, and departicularized. Nowhere is the inquiry into Holocaust memory more fraught or potentially more productive than in German Studies, where scholars have struggled to address German guilt and responsibility while doing justice to the global impact of the Holocaust, and are increasingly facing the challenge of engaging with the broader, interdisciplinary, transnational field. Persistent Legacy connects the present, critical scholarly moment with this long disciplinary tradition, probing the relationship between German Studies and Holocaust Studies today.     Which writer today is not a writer of the Holocaust?' asked the late Imre Kertesz, Hungarian survivor and novelist, in his Nobel acceptance speech: 'one does not have to choose the Holocaust as one's subject to detect the broken voice that has dominated modern European art for decades'. Robert Eaglestone attends to this broken voice in literature in order to explore the meaning of the Holocaust in the contemporary world, arguing, again following Kertesz, that the Holocaust will 'remain through culture, which is really the vessel of memory'. Drawing on the thought of Hannah Arendt, Eaglestone identifies and develops five concepts-the public secret, evil, stasis, disorientalism, and kitsch-in a range of texts by significant writers (including Kazuo Ishiguro, Jonathan Littell, Imre Kertesz, W. G. Sebald, and Joseph Conrad) as well as in work by victims and perpetrators of the Holocaust and of atrocities in Africa.     "In studies of Holocaust representation and memory, scholars of literature and culture traditionally have focused on particular national contexts. At the same time, recent work has brought the Holocaust into the arena of the transnational, leading to a crossroads between localized and global understandings of Holocaust memory. Further complicating the issue are generational shifts that occur with the passage of time, and which render memory and representations of the Holocaust ever more mediated, commodified, and departicularized. Nowhere is the inquiry into Holocaust memory more fraught or potentially more productive than in German Studies, where scholars have struggled to address German guilt and responsibility while doing justice to the global impact of the Holocaust, and are increasingly facing the challenge of engaging with the broader, interdisciplinary, transnational field. Persistent Legacy connects the present, critical scholarly moment with this long disciplinary tradition, probing the relationship between German Studies and Holocaust Studies today. Placed outside of the distorting victim-perpetrator, Jewish-German, man-woman, and war-postwar binary, it becomes visible that the texts neither complete nor contradict each other, but respond to one another by means of inspiration

    Auch im beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert bleiben der Nationalsozialismus und die Shoah in der deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur präsent. Wie schon in den vorangegangenen Jahrzehnten wandeln sich dabei zugleich die Darstellungen kontinuierlich. Literaturwissenschaftler und Literaturwissenschaftlerinnen aus mehreren Ländern analysieren Schlüsseltexte aus dem ersten Jahrzehnt und ordnen sie in die neuesten Entwicklungen ein. Dabei werden Themen aus der Gedächtnis- und Erinnerungsforschung (z.B. Postmemory, Normierung und Globalisierung der Erinnerung) ebenso angesprochen wie ästhetische Verfahrensweisen (Schreiben zwischen Fakt und Fiktion) und narratologische Fragen (Rekonstruktion versus Reflexion, Familiengedächtnis und Generationenroman). „Bis auf kleinere Schwächen einzelner Beiträge ist die Qualität durchwegs hoch, wobei hervorzuheben ist, dass nicht nur verschiedene Autoren und Texte behandelt werden, sondern beinahe immer auch eine erinnerungspolitische Verortung stattfindet. Obwohl es sich in den meisten Beiträgen um Einzeltextstudien handelt, kommt so auch die Einbettung in größere, literaturhistorische- und soziologische Zusammenhänge nicht zu kurz“ (literaturkritik.de)

    "In studies of Holocaust representation and memory, scholars of literature and culture traditionally have focused on particular national contexts. At the same time, recent work has brought the Holocaust into the arena of the transnational, leading to a crossroads between localized and global understandings of Holocaust memory. Further complicating the issue are generational shifts that occur with the passage of time, and which render memory and representations of the Holocaust ever more mediated, commodified, and departicularized. Nowhere is the inquiry into Holocaust memory more fraught or potentially more productive than in German Studies, where scholars have struggled to address German guilt and responsibility while doing justice to the global impact of the Holocaust, and are increasingly facing the challenge of engaging with the broader, interdisciplinary, transnational field. Persistent Legacy connects the present, critical scholarly moment with this long disciplinary tradition, probing the relationship between German Studies and Holocaust Studies today. Fifteen prominent scholars explore how German Studies engages with Holocaust memory and representation, pursuing critical questions concerning the borders between the two fields and how they are impacted by emerging scholarly methods, new areas of inquiry, and the changing place of Holocaust memory in contemporary Germany."--
