    Mit diesem Buch liegt zum ersten Mal eine Edition der frühneuhochdeutschen Übersetzung des Traktats Epistola ad Mahumetem vor. Der Humanist Michael Christan übersetzte im ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert dieses für die osmanisch-christlichen Beziehungen zentrale Werk des Papstes Pius II. (Enea Silvio Piccolomini) aus dem Lateinischen. Mehr noch als der tatsächliche Kreuzzug des Papstes wirkte sein literarischer Kreuzzug in der Epistola und weiteren Schriften nach. Schließlich wurde das lateinische Ausgangswerk Piccolominis selbst zur wichtigsten Quellen des frühneuzeitlichen Osmanenbildes. Die Edition der Übersetzung liefert somit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Humanismusforschung, zur Germanistik, wie auch für die mittelalterliche sowie frühneuzeitliche Kirchengeschichte
