    Dieser Band ist der diachronen Syntax gewidmet, einem relativ unerforschten Bereich innerhalb der Linguistik. In sieben Kapiteln diskutiert die Autorin die syntaktischen Kategorien und Funktionen, die Hierarchie und die Wortfolge des Indogermanischen. Anhand von Fallbeispielen aus dem Lateinischen, Altgriechischen, Vedischen und Hethitischen sowie aus anderen alten indogermanischen Sprachen analysiert sie Probleme der syntaktischen Rekonstruktion und die Mechanismen, die dem syntaktischen Wandel zugrunde liegen. Die Überlegungen alter indischer und griechisch-römischer Grammatiker zur Syntax werden mit einbezogen, um Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen alter und neuer syntak tischer Theorie zu erörtern. Darüber hinaus nimmt der Band für die Erklärung verschiedener syntaktischer Strukturen Bezug auf Prinzipien der Semantik, der Pragmatik, der Informationsstruktur sowie der Kontaktlinguistik, und kann so auch einen Beitrag zu einem interdisziplinären Ansatz für die historische Linguistik leisten.
