    As debates about Europe, migration, resurgent nationalism, and neoliberalism intensify in Germany and Austria, politics has gained particular prominence in cultural production and cultural institutions. How does this development affect German Studies as a discipline and a practice? Volume 14 of Edinburgh German Yearbook examines political or politicized aspects of contemporary life that have become increasingly significant for culture today. The contributions gathered here offer engaging readings of contemporary literary texts (including work by Saša Stanišic, Anke Stelling, and Timur Vermes), films (by Fatih Akin, Ruth Beckermann, and Andreas Dresen), and other forms of cultural intervention (the polemics of Max Czollek and Oliver Polak, and the activism of the left-feminist group Burschenschaft Hysteria).     A long-overdue process of coming to terms with Austria's Nazi past was sparked by the Waldheim affair of 1985-1988, leading to a transformation in Austrian society. A young generation of artists and intellectuals led a protest movement against the presidential candidate, who had lied about his involvement in the Nazi war machine. The works of this second post-war generation, who continue to dominate the Austrian cultural landscape-the challenges posed by the recent electoral gains of right-wing parties notwithstanding-are marked by unrelenting attention to the shadow cast by the country's Nazi past. Katya Krylova's book undertakes close readings of key contemporary literary texts, films, and memorials that treat Nazism and the Holocaust. It explores the search for the remnants of a pre-Anschluss Austrian-Jewish culture destroyed in the Holocaust through the films of Ruth Beckermann and the writing of Anna Mitgutsch. It discusses responses to the growing xenophobia of the 1990s in a chapter on the films of Ulrich Seidl and Florian Flicker. Another chapter focuses on Elfriede Jelinek's deeply radical and controversial treatment of the Rechnitz massacre. And a chapter on Robert Schindel's Der Kalte analyzes the first historical novel about the Waldheim affair and what it tells us about that period's continuing significance. The book concludes with an investigation of recent memorial projects in Vienna and what these reveal about the Austria's contemporary politics of memory

    This paper seeks to demonstrate the ways in which Bachmann's work constitutes a prime case for examining the scope and the boundaries of philological research. It does so by focusing on Bachmann‘s fragmentary and unfinished novel, "Das Buch Franza" [1965-1966], exploring the text and its author in an interdisciplinary light. Forming part of Bachmann's uncompleted "Todesarten"-Projekt, "Das Buch Franza" deals with the continuing legacy of fascism and its displaced forms in the post-war era. In its thematisation of the traumatic and necessarily belated after-effects of the Second World War and the Holocaust, Bachmann‘s text draws on various disciplines and discourses, namely geology, archaeology and psychoanalysis. I consider the ways in which the interdisciplinary ambitions of the text reflect Bachmann‘s struggle for a new form of representation, one that adequately mirrors the concerns of her society. Finally, drawing on Bachmann‘s own theoretical reflections on the field of literary study in her Frankfurt Lectures on poetics, I trace the ways in which the author's work repeatedly encourages us to adopt multiple disciplinary perspectives, as well as privileging literature with a utopian function that exceeds any generic or disciplinary boundaries.
