This compilation of articles published over eight years focuses the policy implications of the huge growth in cross-border capital flows, which tripled to $6.4 trillion from 1995. Articles also look at the expansion of world trade, explore the impact of globalization on jobs, taxation, and the poor, and examine the digital divide between developed and some developing countries. They examine the economic implications of and responses to globalization in an era when porous borders limit the domestic effectiveness of many national decisions while causing their effects to be transmitted internationally.--Publisher's description

The study calls for a two-track strategy: first, deep multilateral liberalization involving phased but complete elimination of industrial-county protection and deep reduction of protection by at least the middle-income developing countries, albeit on a more gradual schedule; and second, immediate free entry for imports from high risk low-income countries (heavily indebted poor countries, least developed countries, and sub-Saharan Africa), coupled with a 10-year tax holiday for direct investment in these countries

Episodes of increased global risk aversion, also known as risk-off episodes, have become more frequent and severe since 2007. During these episodes, currency markets exhibit recurrent patterns, as the Japanese yen, Swiss franc, and U.S. dollar appreciate against other G-10 and emerging market currencies. The pattern of these moves can be explained by a combination of fundamental factors, such as the nominal interest rate, the international investment position and measures of exchange rate misalignment, and market-liquidity factors, such as bid-offer spreads and restrictions on international capital flows. We also find that currency performance in a risk-off episode has become more related to a currency's yield and relationship to broader risks in recent years

The fifth edition of Balance of Payments Manual, issued in 1993, presents revised and updated standards for concepts, definitions, classifications, and conventions for compilation of balance of payments and international investment position statistics that reflect the widespread changes that have taken place in international transactions since the fouth edition was published in 1977. As the international standard, the Manual serves as a guide for IMF member countries that regularly report balance of payments data to the IMF. The Manual contains significantly expanded and restructured coverage of financial flows and stocks and international transactions in services. Harmonization with the System of National Accounts and other IMF statistical systems is also greatly increased. Inflation became the dominant economic, social, and political problem of the industrialized West during the 1970s. This book is about how the inflation came to pass and what can be done about it. Certain to provoke controversy, it is a major source of new empirical information and theoretical conclusions concerning the causes of international inflation. The authors construct a consistent data base of information for eight countries and design a theoretically sound model to test and evaluate competing hypotheses incorporating the most recent theoretical developments. This comprehensive account of the management of the international monetary system from the 1944 Bretton Woods conference to the present day documents the structure and movements of the world economy during a period of dramatic change. Commissioned by the International Monetary Fund to mark its fiftieth anniversary, the work is nevertheless a fully independent one: written by an outside historian with full access to IMF archives and staff, and reviewed by an independent editorial committee. An objective study of issues and events that are often controversial, the book skillfully interweaves the history of the IMF with that of world economic developments after the Second World War

In recent years, financial evolution has come nearly full circle, and there is renewed interest in finding answers to questions that had not been pursued since shortly after the kind of rethinking of the international agenda that has begun at leading universities, banks, and official institutions Since the special drawing right (SDR) was established in 1967, the volume of international financing has grown tremendously, as has the variety of instruments, currencies, and sources of funds involved. In conjunction with the flexible exchange rate system that has prevailed over the past decade, these developments have changed the determinants of international liquidity

"The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in eclipse as the preeminent institution promoting international economic and financial stability, in large measure because of a lack of consensus on its role, says former US official Edwin M. Truman. It should not focus primarily on global poverty or on international financial crises affecting a small group of vulnerable economies. Instead, it must engage each of its members on the full range of their economic and financial policies and play a central role in shaping global economic performance - in particular, the policies of systemically important countries."--Jacket The agenda for IMF reform -- IMF activities and reform efforts -- Role in the international monetary system -- Governance -- Lending facilties -- Financial resources.
