    Main description: Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung ist ein generelles kontrastives Modell der Modalität, das auf das Modalverbpaar müssen/sollen des Deutschen und auf das Modalverb dovere des Italienischen angewandt werden soll. Ausgehend von einer Modalitätsdefinition als propositionaler (Sprecher-)Einstellung und entsprechend den drei propositionalen Einstellungen des Sagens, des Glaubens und des Wollens werden die drei Modalitätsbereiche der Behauptung, der Evaluation und der Volition ermittelt. Je nach Art der behauptenden, evaluierenden oder wollenden Instanz lassen sich in jedem der drei Modalitätsbereiche mehrere Modalitätstypen unterscheiden. Die müssen/sollen- bzw. dovere-Sätze werden nach diesen Kriterien analysiert und im Hinblick auf ihre spezifische funktionale Leistung untersucht. Main description: The study sets out to elaborate a universal contrastive model of modality and to apply it to the modal verbs müssen/sollen in German and dovere in Italian. Proceeding from a definition of modality as a propositional (speaker) attitude and from the three propositional attitudes of saying, believing and wanting, the study defines and establishes the three propositional domains assertion, evaluation, and volition. Depending on the nature of the asserting, evaluating or volitional agent, various types of modality can be identified in each of the three modal domains. Sets of sentences containing müssen/sollen and dovere are analyzed in terms of these criteria and examined for the specific functions they perform.

    Norwegian Modals is a detailed description of the syntactic and semantic properties of modals in Norwegian. The book thoroughly and critically evaluates previous proposals from the modality literature, focusing on argument structure, scopal properties and the interplay of modals with tense and aspect. After presenting a range of new data and generalizations, a new analysis is proposed, incorporating recent developments in generative linguistic theory and the construction of a new compositional tense system.
