    "The figure of 'Mahomet' was widely known in early modern England. A grotesque version of the Prophet Muhammad, Mahomet was a product of vilification, caricature and misinformation placed at the centre of Christian conceptions of Islam. In Mythologies of the Prophet Muhammad in Early Modern English Culture Matthew Dimmock draws on an eclectic range of early modern sources - literary, historical, visual - to explore the nature and use of Mahomet in a period bounded by the beginnings of print and the early Enlightenment. This fabricated figure and his spurious biography were endlessly recycled, but also challenged and vindicated, and the tales the English told about him offer new perspectives on their sense of the world - its geographies and religions, near and far - and their place within it. This book explores the role played by Mahomet in the making of Englishness, and reflects on what this might reveal about England's present circumstances"--

    Islam has been a rich topic in German-language literature since the middle ages, and the writings about it not only reveal much about Islamic culture but also about the European 'home' culture. Many of the early essays in this chronologically arranged volume uncover fresh evidence of how German writers used images of Islam-as-other to define their individual subject positions as well as to define the German nation and the Christian religion. The perspectives of many contemporary writers are, however, far removed from such a polar opposition of cultures. Their experience of the German-Islamic encounter is complicated by a crucial factor: many of them emerge from Muslim migrant communities such as the German-Turkish community. The culturally hybrid origins of these writers and their expression of experiences and ideologies that cross boundaries of East and West, Christendom and Islam, strongly affect the findings of the essays as the volume moves toward the present. The texts discussed include travelogues and other firsthand encounters with Islam; reports for colonial authorities; aesthetic treatises on Islamic art; literary, essayistic, and theological writing on Islamic religious practice; the incorporation of characters, situations, and settings from the Islamic world into fiction or drama; and fictional and autobiographical writing by Muslims in German.     In drei Hauptkapiteln mit unterschiedlichen Analyseschwerpunkten werden die dominanten Präsentationstechniken der Islamdarstellung in der Presse ermittelt. Dem Sinn-Induktionsschnitt der Filmtechnik etwa vergleichbar werden auch Montagetechiken in Printmedien verwandt, wobei Bilder und/oder Texte aus den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen miteinander verknüpft werden. Die dabei erzeugten Sinnzusammenhänge reichen weit über die Einzelbedeutungen hinaus und ergeben oft falsche Kontextualisierungen. Eine quantitativ empirische Analyse der Verwendung arabo-islamischen Wortschatzes im Deutschen belegt eine deutliche Tendenz zur Pejoration. Im exemplarisch analysierten Fall Taslima Nasrins aus Bangladesch machen die verwendeten Metaphern deutlich, welche Handlungsoptionen die Wahl bestimmter Konzepte zur Beschreibung von Sachverhalten nahe legen. Die anschließende Syntaxanalyse bestätigt, dass die Verfolgung Nasrins im Wesentlichen hochstilisiert wurde. Ein Vergleich mit dem antisemitischen Diskurs im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert - als dem bisher am meisten erforschten diskriminatorischen Diskurs überhaupt - führt schließlich vor, dass sprachliche Diskriminierung immer den gleichen Mechanismen unterliegt und dass darin ein Potenzial zu weiterreichenden Konsequenzen angelegt ist. Die Dissertation stellt eine Schnittstelle zwischen Psychologie, Sprach-, Medien- und Islamwissenschaft dar. Die Untersuchungsmethode kann auf alle Medien und öffentlichen Diskurse angewandt werden.

    Islam has been a rich topic in German-language literature since the middle ages, and the writings about it not only reveal much about Islamic culture but also about the European 'home' culture. Many of the early essays in this chronologically arranged volume uncover fresh evidence of how German writers used images of Islam-as-other to define their individual subject positions as well as to define the German nation and the Christian religion. The perspectives of many contemporary writers are, however, far removed from such a polar opposition of cultures. Their experience of the German-Islamic encounter is complicated by a crucial factor: many of them emerge from Muslim migrant communities such as the German-Turkish community. The culturally hybrid origins of these writers and their expression of experiences and ideologies that cross boundaries of East and West, Christendom and Islam, strongly affect the findings of the essays as the volume moves toward the present. The texts discussed include travelogues and other firsthand encounters with Islam; reports for colonial authorities; aesthetic treatises on Islamic art; literary, essayistic, and theological writing on Islamic religious practice; the incorporation of characters, situations, and settings from the Islamic world into fiction or drama; and fictional and autobiographical writing by Muslims in German.
