    The novel, according to standard scholarly narratives, depicts an individual's path to maturity. Scholarship on the rise of the novel in Germany and in Europe more broadly, from Watt to Moretti, has essentially collapsed the genre into the individualist Bildungsroman, exemplified by a narrow canon. This study challenges and nuances these narratives, first by expanding the focus from the individual to the family, second by broadening the field of novels treated to include not only canonical works but also so-called "trivial literature," and third, by reading novels alongside contemporarybiological, legal, and pedagogical texts. This perspective reveals that the novel and the family around 1800 were mutually constitutive and that the two together were instrumental in the developmentof conceptions of individuality, kinship, and society that are still relevant today. Sarah Vandegrift Eldridge reads novels by Goethe, Wolzogen, Engel, Karoline Fischer, August Lafontaine, and Brentano, showing that they exhibit varying degrees of "imaginative didacticism": suggestions not of what to think and feel, but that thinking and feeling in reaction to literature are centralto cultural practices of self-reflection and development. The family is a crucial locus for this practice, and reading novels together with non-literary texts illuminates how they experiment productively with the infinite possibilities presented by the relationships they portray. Sarah Vandegrift Eldridge is Assistant Professor of German at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

    Als literarische Lebensentwürfe von Frauen gestalten weibliche Entwicklungsromane die Geschlechter- und Entwicklungs­vor­stellungen ihrer Zeit. Anhand der Analyse narrativer Muster in ausgewählten Romanen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts zeigt die Studie, dass zeitgleich mit der Verwissenschaftlichung der Geschlechterdichotomie ein kritischer Diskurs einsetzt, der die Festschreibung der Frau auf die Funktionen der Gattin, Hausfrau und Mutter als soziale Konstruktion aufdeckt. Romane von Autorinnen, wie Sophie von La Roche, Friederike Helene Unger, Louise von François oder Hedwig Dohm, entwerfen unter Rückgriff auf zeitgenössische naturwissenschaftliche und medizinische Theoreme individuelle Bilder von Weiblichkeit. Sie zeugen davon, dass das Genre des Entwicklungsromans lange zu Unrecht als männlich konnotiert galt

    Die Arbeit setzt mit der Frage ein, warum der Tod im 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert zunehmend aus dem Bewußtsein der Öffentlichkeit verdrängt wurde und warum es der Literatur gleichzeitig möglich war, sich diesem Thema verstärkt zuzuwenden. Bei der literarischen Analyse geht es weniger um die Untersuchung von Sterbeszenen, sondern um die erzählerische Verarbeitung des Endlichkeitsbewußtseins, das die Erfahrung der Moderne entscheidend prägt. In welcher Weise die Erzählstrukturen durch die neuen Bewußtseinsformen affiziert und verändert werden, macht die Arbeit an exemplarischen Texten deutlich. Dabei geht es um antiklassizistische, an barocke Traditionen anknüpfende Allegorisierungsverfahren (G. Keller), um die Mortifikation des Lebendigen in der Kunst (R. Beer-Hofmann), um die Aufhebung der Zeit in einem traumähnlichen Schreiben und um die Wiedergewinnung der verlorenen Zeit durch die literarische Kraft des Erinnerns (Kafka, Thomas Mann), um die literarische Heroisierung des rauschhaften Todes (Jünger) oder um die schockartig veränderte Wahrnehmung des Todes im Kontext einer modernen Großstadt (Rilke). Auch wenn literaturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen im Vordergrund stehen, werden philosophische, kultur- und mentalitätsgeschichtliche Erkenntnisse einbezogen
