    Synchronic sociolinguistics has been particularly convincing in its use of quantitative models to demonstrates how 'the present might explain the past'. However, the relevance of sociolinguistics to historical linguistics 'using the past to explain the present', has been largely ignored. In this volume Dr Romaine lays the foundation for a field of research encompassing both historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, which aims to investigate and account for language variation within a particular speech community over time. The socio-historical approach is illustrated here by a detailed analysis of the development of relative clause formation strategies in Middle Scots. This case study raises fundamental questions about the epistemological status of sociolinguistic theory and in particular its claims to an empirical foundation. Her own preliminary suggestions for a truly integrative sociolinguistic theory will be of interest to sociolinguists, historical linguists and general linguists

    In diesem Buch werden deutsche und englische Satzstrukturen kontrastiv untersucht, und zwar in typologischer Hinsicht. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Valenzaspekt der Satzstruktur: Es werden aber nicht nur die deutschen und englischen Ausdrucksmittel - die einfachen Ergänzungen und die Ergänzungssätze - vorgestellt und kontrastiert, sondern sie werden in einer Korpusanalyse quantifiziert. Es ist das Anliegen dieses Buches, zu einer Typologie der Textrealisierung beizutragen. Hierzu wird ein deutsch-englisches bzw. englisch-deutsches Übersetzungskorpus definiert und ausgewertet. Die beobachteten Kontraste werden im Zusammenhang typologischer Tendenzen und bevorzugter Vertextungsstrategien bewertet. Ziel der Arbeit ist die Überprüfung des einflussreichen typologischen Bildes von John A. Hawkins, das Deutsche sei semantisch transparenter als das Englische. Die Einzelanalysen sind für alle, die sich theoretisch oder praktisch für Übersetzung und Spracherwerb interessieren, von Bedeutung

    This book examines the structure and function of the English it-cleft configuration from within the framework of construction grammar. It defends a straightforward extraposition-from-NP analysis (on which the cleft clause is a restrictive relative, modifying the initial it) and claims that all types of it-cleft involve nominal predication. Support for this analysis comes from three main areas: (a) the central role of definiteness in the creation of specificational meaning, (b) the existence and makeup of predicational (and proverbial) it-clefts, and (c) the early, historical it-cleft data. In addition, the book contains a sizeable diachronic component, drawing data from the Penn Parsed Corpora of Historical English and from the International Corpus of English - Great Britain. This investigation informs and advances what is an otherwise simple account of the English it-cleft, explaining how and why the configuration has developed an assortment of peculiar, construction-specific properties over time
