Elucidating the material characteristics - e.g. the appearance and composition of the material and the different written layers, the arrangement and features of handwritten and printed books can provide clues about the origin of a text. Thirty-five individual contributions - ranging from Bible transmission in antiquity, medieval manuscripts to the sketch books of modern authors - explore how such material features are studied, processed and presented within the framework of edition-making. Die Untersuchung leistet eine grundsätzliche (Neu-)Bewertung des interkulturellen Verhältnisses von Juden und Christen zwischen 1150 und 1500. Fragmente des Transfers jüdischer Motive und Stoffe in die christliche Literatur des deutschen Mittelalters werden aufgezeigt und unser Bild der mittelalterlichen deutschsprachigen Literatur um einen bedeutsamen Aspekt vervollständigt. Zudem wird ein weiterer Beitrag dazu geleistet, das Verhältnis von Juden und Christen für das deutsche Mittelalter flächendeckend verstehen zu können.

The contours of this "medieval linguistics" become clear in the comparison with two further approaches to linguistic theory - four tracts by medieval Icelandic grammarians and Saussure's "Cours de linguistique générale" as a fundamental work in modern linguistics.     The history of literature about war is marked by a fundamental paradox: although war forms the subject of countless novels, dramas, poems, and films, it is often conceived as indescribable. Even as many writers strive towards an ideal of authenticity, they maintain that no representation can do justice to the terror and violence of war. Readings of Schiller, Kleist, Jünger, Remarque, Grass, Böll, Handke, and Jelinek reveal that stylistic and aesthetic features, gender discourses, and concepts of agency and victimization can all undermine a text's martial stance or its ostensible pacifist agenda. Spanning the period from the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars to the recent wars in Yugoslavia and Iraq, this book investigates the aesthetic, theoretical, and historical challenges that confront writers of war
