    Main description: Für die Beziehung zwischen Goethes Iphigenie auf Tauris und Grillparzers Trilogie Das goldene Vließ sind zwei Strukturmerkmale grundlegend: die wertende Entgegensetzung des Griechischen und des Barbarischen und der Bezug auf die Gattung der griechischen mythologischen Tragödie, in der jene Entgegensetzung eine ethnozentrische Funktion hat, die sich auch in den modernen (z.B. ethnographischen) Übertragungen des Barbarenbegriffs geltend macht. Von Goethes humanistischer Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Überlieferung hebt sich Grillparzers tragische Entblößung des Humanismus ab. Biographical note: Markus Winkler, Universität Genf, Schweiz. Main description: For the relationship between Goethe’s Iphigenie auf Tauris [Iphigenie on Tauris] and Grillparzer’s trilogy Das goldene Vließ [The Golden Fleece] there are two structural features of fundamental importance? the evaluative opposition of the Greek and the barbaric and the reference to the genre of Greek mythological tragedy, in which that opposition has an ethnocentric function, which applies also to modern (e.g. ethnographic) transmissions of the concept of barbarism. Grillparzer’s tragic exposure of humanism stands in contrast to Goethe’s humanistic engagement with this tradition. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis.     The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw an extraordinary flowering of arts and culture in Germany which produced many of the world's finest writers, artists, philosophers and composers. This volume, first published in 2004, offers students and specialists an authoritative introduction to that dazzling cultural phenomenon, now known collectively as German Romanticism. Individual chapters not only introduce the reader to individual writers such as Friedrich Schlegel, Novalis, Eichendorff, Heine, Hoffmann, Kleist, Schiller and Tieck, but also treat key concepts of Romantic music, painting, philosophy, gender and cultural anthropology, science and criticism in concise and lucid language. All German quotations are translated to make this volume fully accessible to a wide audience interested in how Romanticism evolved across Europe.
