    Le désir de se dire engendre un acte dont il faut mesurer, avec ses limites, la capacité critique comme le pouvoir émancipateur. Quelles médiations relient les récits personnels à leur inscription sociale, à l'histoire collective et aux événements dont les auteurs ont pu être protagonistes ou témoins ? Comment la configuration singulière de l'expérience intime peut-elle s'articuler à la compréhension générale d'une société ? Le récit de soi peut-il fonder une réflexivité critique impliquant le passage du « je » empirique au « on » d'un individu en société, participant de la construction d'un sens commun ? Au carrefour de l'histoire, de l'anthropologie et de la sociologie, ce livre questionne aussi, entre Europe et Afrique, le poids des normes et des injonctions d'écriture, comme la possibilité d'autonomie morale et de liberté de l'acteur dans son expérience sociale, en termes d'engagement et de compréhension.
