    This paper gives an overview of activities which have been carried out in the field of Linguistic Landscapes (LL) at Rēzekne University College (Rēzeknes Augstskola, RA) since 2008. Between 2009 and 2012, LL research was carried out within the framework of one of the work groups of the TILRA project funded by the European Social Funds (ESF). TILRA has had the overarching aim to support research in the humanities which may be helpful for understanding local identity and contribute to the regional development of Latgale. In this light, LL research has proven to be of high value for triggering effects in education at all levels, academic research and for enhancing discussions within politics and regional development. ; Raksta mērķis ir izvērtēt lingvistiskās ainavas laukā paveikto, apkopojot piecu gadu pieredzi un ieskicējot nākotnes perspektīvas turpmākajos pētījumos un studiju procesa satura plānojumā. Rakstā pamatā ir izmantota deskriptīvā pētniecības metode un kontentanalīze. Būtiskākie secinājumi: Lingvistiskās ainavas izpēte dažādās teritoriālajās vienībās Baltijas valstīs ir notikusi kopš 2008. gada, iesaistot arī studentus un vidusskolēnus. Lingvistiskās ainavas izpētes un metodoloģijas pilnveides rezultātā Rēzeknes Augstskolā (turpmāk – RA) ir izveidota kvantitatīvo un kvalitatīvo datu bāze, izstrādāti daudzveidīgi individuālie un kolektīvie pētījumi.Turpmāk ir plānots lielāku uzmanību veltīt Latgales skolu ainavai un citu iestāžu mikrovides izpētei, Latgales pilsētu datu salīdzinājumam ar citu Eiropas valstu reģionu lingvistisko ainavu, korelējot kvantitatīvos datus ar diskursa analīzes daudzveidīgo pieeju iespējām.

    Статтю присвячено дослідженню комунікативних невдач у мовленнєвому жанрі відеоінтерв’ю крізь призму української національної ідентичності. Визначено тематику, типи і жанрово-мовну специфіку українського відеоінтерв’ю як зразка діалогічного мовлення. Встановлено специфіку комунікативних невдач у цьому жанрі (зі спортсменами, політиками і культурними діячами) з огляду на позиції комунікантів, структурні рівні досліджуваного жанру та максими спілкування. ; The article deals with communicative deviations in the speech genre of video interviews in the aspect of Ukrainian national identity. The topics, types and genre and language specificity of Ukrainian video interviews as a sample of dialogical speech are determined. The specificity of communicative deviations in this genre (with athletes, politicians and cultural figures) is determined, taking into account the positions of participants of communication, the structural levels of this genre and maxims of communication.

    Anders als Schiller taugt Goethe, nicht zum literarischen Stichwortgeber der Befreiungskriege. Zu offensichtlich ist seine Bewunderung für Napoleon, zu gering seine Bereitschaft, sich im hohen Alter noch patriotisch zu erhitzen. Schiller konnte sich aufgrund seines unerwarteten Todes im Jahr 1805 nicht mehr selbst zur erwachenden Nationalbegeisterung äußern. Zwar soll ihm der korsische "Eroberer" und "Unterdrücker", den er an keiner Stelle seines Werkes explizit nennt, "durchaus zuwider" gewesen sein, doch ist seine Funktionalisierung für patriotische Zwecke ein postumes Rezeptionsphänomen. Gerade Schillers späte historische Dramen laden zu identifikatorischen Lektüren ein. Das von Christian Jakob Zahn vertonte Reiterlied aus Wallensteins Lager, das die Überwindung der Todesangst zur erhabenen, ich-steigernden Freiheitserfahrung verklärt, erfreut sich bei Soldaten und Theaterbesuchern über Generationen hinweg großer Beliebtheit [.] Die Schiller zugeschriebenen Merkmale bleiben über einen langen Zeitraum stabil und verbinden sich mit den verschiedensten ideologischpolitischen Gehalten. Das Bild des Dichters speist sich dabei sowohl aus der Sphäre weltlichen Heldentums wie der religiösen Verheißung. [.] Die Kanonisierung Schillers zum Nationalhelden wird durch die territoriale Streuung und fragmentierte Überlieferung seiner Lebenszeugnisse kaum gebremst. Vielmehr entsteht das Bedürfnis zur Pflege des materiellen Erbes erst aus der Dynamik der Kultgeschichte. [.] Die Erhebung Schillers zum Garanten militärischer und moralischer Überlegenheit nimmt in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts offen chauvinistische Züge an. Kritik an den Klassikern erscheint in diesem Zusammenhang als Hochverrat, der das Heil der Nation gefährdet.

    This paper focuses on a key contradiction in nineteenth century nationalist ideology, namely the opposition between the emphasis on the sacred status of the mother tongue, on the one hand, and the use of universal mandatory schooling as a means of homogenization, on the other. The influential philologist Jacob Grimm insisted that only people whose mother tongue was German counted as members of the German nation; the mother tongue was the key criterion of authentic belonging. Yet Grimm also realized that mandatory schooling imposed a uniform language across a wide territory, wiping out local dialects and effectively giving shape to a more linguistically unified people. He thus witnessed how modern mass instruction forged a more standardized culture at the expense of the more natural-seeming transmission of language within families. In Grimm's writings on education, the valorization of the mother is continually disturbed by the presence of a surrogate figure, the school teacher.

    Two experiments investigated the effects of linguistic abstractness on the experience of collective moral emotions. In Experiment 1 participants were presented with two scenarios about ingroup misbehavior, phrased using descriptive action verbs, interpretative action verbs, adjectives or nouns. The results show that participants experienced slightly more negative moral emotions with higher levels of linguistic abstractness. In Experiment 2 we also tested for the influence of national identification on the relationship between linguistic abstractness and emotional reactions. Additionally, we expanded the number of scenarios. Experiment 2 replicated the earlier pattern, but found larger differences between conditions. The strength of national identification did not moderate the observed effects. The results of this research are discussed within the context of the linguistic category model and psychology of collective moral emotions.
