    In diesem Beitrag wird eine Definition von Phraseologie zum Ausgangspunkt für eine Klassifikation der verschiedenen Typen von Phraseologismen gemacht. Es wird versucht, idiomatische Ausdrücke als metaphorische Ausdrücke im Rahmen der Phraseologismen zu charakterisieren und sie nach morpho-syntaktischen Kriterien zu klassifizieren. Danach wird ein Vergleich zwischen verbalen idiomatischen Ausdrücken des Deutschen und des brasilianischen Portugiesisch zur Erstellung einer Typologie von Äquivalenzen durchgeführt. Darüber hinaus werden auch einige Arten von Restriktionen, die in den idiomatischen Ausdrücken beider Sprachen vorkommen, verglichen und die Bedeutung des Registers vieler Ausdrücke hervorgehoben. This paper presents a definition of phraseology, and based on this definition it establishes the different types of phraseological units. Then it tries to characterize the idiomatic expression as a metaphoric expression within the scope of phraseologisms, and presents a morpho-syntactic classification of these idioms. The next step consists of a comparison between verbal idiomatic expressions in German and Brazilian Portuguese in order to establish a typology of equivalences between the two languages. It also compares same type of. restrictions which occur in idiomatic expressions of both languages, and emphasizes the importance of register in some of the expressions.

    In diesem Beitrag wird über die Notwendigkeit der Untersuchung der pragmatischen Aspekte von Phraseologismen reflektiert und Vorschläge zu ihrer konkreten Erhebung und ihrer kontrastiven Analyse im Hinblick auf eine lexikographische Beschreibung und den Fremdsprachenunterricht gemacht. This paper shows the necessity of analysing phraseological units in the light of pragmatics and proposes two ways of realizing a contrastive analysis with regard to lexicographic description and foreign language teaching.

    In this paper, we investigate the temporal interpretation of propositional attitude complement clauses in four typologically unrelated languages: Washo (language isolate), Medumba (Niger-Congo), Hausa (Afro-Asiatic), and Samoan (Austronesian). Of these languages, Washo and Medumba are optional-tense languages, while Hausa and Samoan are tenseless. Just like in obligatory-tense languages, we observe variation among these languages when it comes to the availability of so-called simultaneous and backward-shifted readings of complement clauses. For our optional-tense languages, we argue that a Sequence of Tense parameter is active in these languages, just as in obligatory-tense languages. However, for completely tenseless clauses, we need something more. We argue that there is variation in the degree to which languages make recourse to res-movement, or a similar mechanism that manipulates LF structures to derive backward-shifted readings in tenseless complement clauses. We additionally appeal to cross-linguistic variation in the lexical semantics of perfective aspect to derive or block certain readings. The result is that the typological classification of a language as tensed, optionally tensed, or tenseless, does not alone determine the temporal interpretation possibilities for complement clauses. Rather, structural parameters of variation cross-cut these broad classes of languages to deliver the observed cross-linguistic picture.

    DRuKoLA, the accompanying project in the making of the Corpus of Romanian Language, is a cooperation between German and Romanian computer scientists, corpus linguists and linguists, aiming at linking reference corpora of European languages under one corpus analysis tool able to manage big data. KorAP, the analysis tool developed at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (Mannheim), is being tailored for the Romanian language in a first attempt to reunite reference corpora under the EuReCo initiative, detailed in this paper. The paper describes the necessary steps of harmonization within KorAP and the corpus of Romanian language and discusses, as one important goal of this project, criteria and ways to build virtual comparable corpora to be used for contrastive linguistic analyses.

    This paper reports on the efforts of twelve national teams in building the International Comparable Corpus (ICC; korpus.cz/icc) that will contain highly comparable datasets of spoken, written and electronic registers. The languages currently covered are Czech, Finnish, French, German, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Slovak, Swedish and, more recently, Chinese, as well as English, which is considered to be the pivot language. The goal of the project is to provide much-needed data for contrastive corpus-based linguistics. The ICC corpus is committed to the idea of re-using existing multilingual resources as much as possible and the design is modelled, with various adjustments, on the International Corpus of English (ICE). As such, ICC will contain approximately the same balance of forty percent of written language and 60 percent of spoken language distributed across 27 different text types and contexts. A number of issues encountered by the project teams are discussed, ranging from copyright and data sustainability to technical advances in data distribution.

    This contribution investigates the German response particle genau and the French response particle voilà within collaborative turn sequences in videotaped ordinary conversations. Adopting a conversation analytic approach to cross-linguistic comparison, I will show that the basic epistemic value of both particles allows them to be used in similar sequential environments. When a co-participant formulates a candidate conclusion in environments where it can be easily inferred from previous talk, first speakers may confirm the adequacy of the pre-emptive completion by voilà or genau. These particles may then also be followed by self- or other-repeats. The analyses aim to illustrate that participants rely on a variety of practices in order to positively assess a pre-emptive completion, and to refute a supposed binary opposition of refusal vs. acceptance in the receipt slot.

    Cet article se fonde sur une collection de répétitions suite à un chevauchement, tirée de données vidéo en allemand et en français. La description systématique de cet outil de reprise de tour articule une comparaison entre cas clairs et cas déviants de ce phénomène. Il est démontré que le recyclage est aussi bien une ressource du locuteur suivant que du locuteur en cours. ; This article is devoted to a collection of post-overlap repetitions in French and German video data. Systematic description of this method of turn-retrieval is based on a comparison of clear and deviant cases. It will be argued that recycling is not only a next speaker ressource, but can also be used by the current speaker.

    Das Ziel des Beitrags ist es, die Merkmale von Kommunikationsstörungen in Star-Interviews aus Sicht der Befragten, also der Interviewten festzustellen und zu analysieren. Die empirische Forschungsbasis besteht aus ukrainisch- und deutschsprachigen Videointerviews aus den Jahren 2010 bis 2019, die entweder im Fernsehen gesendet oder für YouTube produziert wurden. Das Forschungsverfahren beinhaltet die integrierte Anwendung von Methoden und Techniken der kommunikativen Linguistik, insbesondere der Diskurs-Analyse. Für die Untersuchung dieser Kommunikationsstörungen wurde eine neue methodische Grundlage entwickelt, und zwar für die Rekonstruktion eines einzelnen Ereignisses in zwei diskursiven Umgebungen, das Feststellen des kommunikativen Kontextes und der Kommunikationssituation in Interviews in vergleichbaren Sprachen. Die Ergebnisse der Studie ermöglichten es, die charakteristischen Merkmale von Kommunikationsstörungen in Star-Interviews auf drei Ebenen der kommunikativen Gattung zu identifizieren: auf der außenstrukturellen, binnenstrukturellen und situativen Ebene. Sowohl gemeinsame Merkmale von Kommunikationsstörungen als auch Unterschiede in den ukrainischen und deutschsprachigen Interviews wurden bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen, dass die Arten von Kommunikationsstörungen in Interviews mit Prominenten im Ukrainischen und Deutschen universell sind, sie spiegeln jedoch die nationalen und kulturellen Besonderheiten angesichts der Merkmale beider Sprachen und jeder Sprachkultur und ihrer Realitäten, Normen, Konventionen und Maximen der Kommunikation wider.     One of the fundamental questions about human language is whether all languages are equally complex. Here, we approach this question from an information-theoretic perspective. We present a large scale quantitative cross-linguistic analysis of written language by training a language model on more than 6500 different documents as represented in 41 multilingual text collections consisting of ~ 3.5 billion words or ~ 9.0 billion characters and covering 2069 different languages that are spoken as a native language by more than 90% of the world population. We statistically infer the entropy of each language model as an index of what we call average prediction complexity. We compare complexity rankings across corpora and show that a language that tends to be more complex than another language in one corpus also tends to be more complex in another corpus. In addition, we show that speaker population size predicts entropy. We argue that both results constitute evidence against the equi-complexity hypothesis from an information-theoretic perspective.

    Computational language models (LMs), most notably exemplified by the widespread success of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, show impressive performance on a wide range of linguistic tasks, thus providing cognitive science and linguistics with a computational working model to empirically study different aspects of human language. Here, we use LMs to test the hypothesis that languages with more speakers tend to be easier to learn. In two experiments, we train several LMs—ranging from very simple n-gram models to state-of-the-art deep neural networks—on written cross-linguistic corpus data covering 1293 different languages and statistically estimate learning difficulty. Using a variety of quantitative methods and machine learning techniques to account for phylogenetic relatedness and geographical proximity of languages, we show that there is robust evidence for a relationship between learning difficulty and speaker population size. However, contrary to expectations derived from previous research, our results suggest that languages with more speakers tend to be harder to learn.

    This paper traces the development of ideas on deviatology in Ukraine. An interdisciplinary and specialized approaches to the study of communicative failures and prospects of the research of deviatology are offered. An interdisciplinary approach is the one that is reflected in the studies of deviatology in philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, intercultural communication and journalism. It is, however, a specialized approach which enables to separate such groups within the areas of research of deviations: systematical and theoretical, cognitive, discursive-textual, communicative, didactic and contrastive. This tendency comprises the attempt of a comprehensive approach to the phenomena of deviations, i.e. communicative and functional. ; У статті представлено розвиток девіатологічних ідей в Україні. Встановлено міждисциплінарний і спеціалізований підходи, запропоновано перспективи розвитку девіатологічних досліджень. Міждисциплінарний підхід знайшов відображення девіатологічних студій у філософії, психології, педагогіці, міжкультурній комунікації та журналістиці, а спеціалізований – у системно-теоретичному, когнітивному, дискурсно-текстовому, комунікативному, дидактичному і контрастивному напрямах досліджень. Така тенденція становить спробу комплексного комунікативнофункціонального підходу до явища девіацій.

    The article presents the results of a survey on dictionary use in Europe, focusing on general monolingual dictionaries. The survey is the broadest survey of dictionary use to date, covering close to 10,000 dictionary users (and non-users) in nearly thirty countries. Our survey covers varied user groups, going beyond the students and translators who have tended to dominate such studies thus far. The survey was delivered via an online survey platform, in language versions specific to each target country. It was completed by 9,562 respondents, over 300 respondents per country on average. The survey consisted of the general section, which was translated and presented to all participants, as well as country-specific sections for a subset of 11 countries, which were drafted by collaborators at the national level. The present report covers the general section.

    The article investigates Ukrainian and German YouTube interviews from the point of view of contrastive linguistics. The purpose of this paper is to separate out the interview as a communicative genre and to determine the main aspects of research on discrepancies in expectations among interview participants, in particular to clarify the role of poor recipient design as the cause of communication failures. Results indicate that poor recipient design is the most common source of communication failures in both languages.

    The present paper deals with selected morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of nominal totalizers in German and in Brazilian Portuguese. In particular, it analyzes the elements 'todo', 'cada', 'ambos' and 'os dois', as well as 'alle', 'jeder', 'der ganze' and 'beide'. In terms of morphology, it describes the formation of gender, number and case forms. In the field of syntax, it focuses on the position of totalizers in the nominal phrase, their relations to determiners and quantifiers, and the functional distribution of declension types. In terms of semantics and pragmatics, it investigates the codification of referential and quantificational information, definiteness and cumulative v distributive totalization. The epistemological interest is defined by the objectives of linguistic comparison between German and Brazilian Portuguese, including the analysis of typical errors committed by language learners in both directions. ; Der vorliegende Aufsatz behandelt ausgewählte morphologische, syntaktische, semantische und pragmatische Eigenschaften von Nominaltotalisatoren im Deutschen und im brasilianischen Portugiesisch. Im einzelnen werden die Elemente 'todo', 'cada', 'ambos' und 'os dois' sowie 'alle', 'jeder', 'der ganze' und 'beide' behandelt. Hinsichtlich ihrer Morphologie wird die Bildung von Genus-, Numerus- und Kasusformen beschrieben. Im Bereich der Syntax geht es um die Stellung der Totalisatoren in der Nominalphrase, ihre Beziehungen zu Determinantien und Quantoren und um die funktionale Verteilung von Deklinationstypen. Im Bereich der Semantik und Pragmatik geht es um die Kodierung referentieller und quantifikationaler Information, um Definitheit und um kumulative vs. Distributive Totalisierung. Das Erkenntnisinteresse wird durch den Vergleich zwischen dem Deutschen und dem brasilianischen Portugiesisch bestimmt, wobei auf typische Fehler von Sprachlernern in beiden Richtungen eingegangen wird.
