    "This book explores in unprecedented detail the theological thinking of John Witherspoon during his often overlooked ministerial career in Scotland. In contrast to the arguments made by other historians, it shows that there was considerable continuity of thought between Witherspoon's Scottish ministry and the second half of his career as one of America's Founding Fathers. The book argues that Witherspoon cannot be properly understood until he is seen as not only engaged with the Enlightenment, but also firmly grounded in the Calvinist tradition of High to Late Orthodoxy, embedded in the transatlantic Evangelical Awakening of the eighteenth century, and frustrated by the state of religion in the Scottish Kirk. Alongside the titles of pastor, president, educator, philosopher, should be a new category: John Witherspoon as Reformed apologist. This is a fresh re-examination of the intellectual formation of one of Scotland's most important churchman from the eighteenth century and one of America's most influential early figures. Aus zeichentheoretischer Perspektive ließe sich jedoch entgegenhalten: »Nichts« ist flüchtiger als ein Zeichen und jene Vorstellung eine bloße Behauptung. Vor diesem paradoxen Hintergrund unternimmt die Monographie den Versuch, systematisch innersprachlichen Verfahren nachzugehen, die dazu eingesetzt werden, Informationen möglichst dauerhaft festzuhalten. Sie stützt sich dabei auf literarische Texte zwischen 1755 und 1821 sowie deren historische Ko- und Kontexte. Es gelingt ihr so, im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie der Semiotik erstmals eine Typologie vorzulegen, die weit über die Zeit um 1800 und die Literatur hinaus zeichenhafte Verfahren im Dienste der »Verewigung« zu beschreiben vermag. Semiotics of Eternalization At the interface of literary and cultural studies as well as semiotics, this monograph systematically examines intralinguistic procedures intended to record information for eternity. It succeeds, for the first time, in presenting a typology that describes semiotic procedures in the pursuit of »eternalization« that are not only limited to the period around 1800. An extended English general survey and summary is included.

Using the theatre as a means of circulating and publicizing radical Enlightenment ideas, many plays made passionate arguments for religious and cultural toleration, and voiced protests against imperial invasion and forced conversion of indigenous peoples by colonial Europeans. Irish and labouring-class dramatists wrote plays, often set in the countryside, attacking social and political hierarchy in Britain itself. Another crucial but as yet unexplored aspect of early eighteenth-century theatre is its connection to freemasonry. Freemasons were pervasive as actors, managers, prompters, scene-painters, dancers and musicians, with their own lodges, benefit performances and particular audiences. "Hamlet is a characteristic intellectual more inclined to lecture actors about their craft than listen to them, a precursor of Enlightenment figures like Diderot and Lessing. This book is a quest for the voice of early professional actors, drawing on English, French and other European sources to distinguish the methods of professionals from the theories of intellectual amateurs. David Wiles challenges the orthodoxy that all serious discussion of acting began with Stanislavski, and outlines the comprehensive but fluid classical system of acting which was for some three hundred years its predecessor. He reveals premodern acting as a branch of rhetoric, which took from antiquity a vocabulary for conversations about the relationship of mind and body, inside and outside, voice and movement. Wiles demonstrates that Roman rhetoric provided the bones of both a resilient theatrical system and a physical art that retains its relevance for the post- Stanislavskian performer"--

    "Societies perceive "Reform" or "Reforms" as substantial changes and significant breaks which must be well-justified. The Enlightenment brought forth the idea that the future was uncertain and could be shaped by human beings. This gave the concept of reform a new character and new fields of application. Those who sought support for their plans and actions needed to reflect, develop new arguments, and offer new reasons to address an anonymous public. This book aims to compile these changes under the heuristic term of "languages of reform." This volume brings together an international group of scholars with the goal of putting to rest the idea that Florence ceased to be interesting after the Renaissance.     Traditional accounts of the Scottish Enlightenment present the half-century or so before 1750 as, at best, a not-yet fully realised precursor to the era of Hume and Smith, at worst, a period of superstition and religious bigotry. This is the first book-length study to systematically challenge that notion. Instead, it argues that the era between approximately 1680 and 1745 was a 'First' Scottish Enlightenment, part of the continent-wide phenomenon of early Enlightenment and led by the Jacobites, Episcopalians, and Catholics of north-eastern Scotland. It makes this argument through an intensive study of the dramatic changes in historiographical practice which took place in Scotland during this era, showing how the documentary scholarship of Jean Mabillon and the Maurists was eagerly received and rapidly developed in Scottish historical circles, resulting in the wholesale demolition of the older, Humanist myths of Scottish origins and their replacement with the foundations of our modern understanding of early Scottish history.0This volume accordingly challenges many of the truisms surrounding seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Scottish history, pushing back against notions of pre-Enlightenment Scotland as backward, insular, and intellectually impoverished and mapping a richly polymathic, erudite, and transnational web of scholars, readers, and polemicists. It highlights the enduring cultural links with France and argues for the central importance of Scotland's two principal religious minorities-Episcopalians and0Catholics-in the growth of Enlightenment thinking.     "The emergence of a theatrical science of man in France, 1660-1740 highlights a radical departure from discussions of dramatic literature and its undergirding rules to a new, relational discourse on the emotional power of theater. Through a diverse cast of religious theaterphobes, government officials, playwrights, art theorists and proto-philosophes, Connors shows the concerted effort in early Enlightenment France to use texts about theater to establish broader theories on emotion, on the enduring psychological and social ramifications of affective moments, and more generally, on human interaction, motivation, and social behavior. This fundamentally anthropological assessment of theater emerged in the works of anti-theatrical religious writers, who argued that emotional response was theater's raison d'être and that it was an efficient venue to learn more about the depravity of human nature. A new generation of pro-theatrical writers shared the anti-theatricalists' intense focus on the emotions of theater, but unlike religious theaterphobes, they did not view emotion as a conduit of sin or as a dangerous, uncontrollable process; but rather, as cognitive-affective moments of feeling and learning. Connors' study explores this reassessment of the theatrical experience which empowered writers to use plays, critiques, and other cultural materials about the stage to establish a theatrical science of man-an early Enlightenment project with aims to study and 'improve' the emotional, social, and political "healt"' of eighteenth-century France." -- Provided by publisher

    The Enlightenment is one of the formative periods of Western history, yet more than 300 years after it began, it remains controversial. It is often seen as the fountainhead of modern values such as human rights, religious toleration, freedom of thought, scientific thought as an exemplary form of reasoning, and rationality and evidence-based argument. Others accuse the Enlightenment of putting forward a scientific rationality which ignores the complexity and variety of human beings, propagates shallow atheism, and aims to subjugate nature to so-called technical progress. Answering the question 'what is Enlightenment?' Kant famously urged men and women above all to 'have the courage to use your own understanding'. Robertson shows how the thinkers of the Enlightenment did just that, seeking a rounded understanding of humanity in which reason was balanced with emotion and sensibility. His book goes behind the controversies about the Enlightenment to return to its original texts and to show that above all it sought to increase human happiness in this world by promoting scientific inquiry and reasoned argument. His book overturns many received opinions - for example, that enlightenment necessarily implied hostility to religion (though it did challenge the authority traditionally assumed by the Churches). It is a master-class in 'big picture' history, about one of the foundational epochs of modern times.

    »Schrift besitzt die Macht, zu verewigen.« Diese Vorstellung begleitet Schriftzeichen seit ihrer Erfindung und hat bis heute nichts von ihrer Wirkmächtigkeit eingebüßt. Aus zeichentheoretischer Perspektive ließe sich jedoch entgegenhalten: »Nichts« ist flüchtiger als ein Zeichen und jene Vorstellung eine bloße Behauptung. Vor diesem paradoxen Hintergrund unternimmt die Monographie den Versuch, systematisch innersprachlichen Verfahren nachzugehen, die dazu eingesetzt werden, Informationen möglichst dauerhaft festzuhalten. Sie stützt sich dabei auf literarische Texte zwischen 1755 und 1821 sowie deren historische Ko- und Kontexte. Es gelingt ihr so, im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie der Semiotik erstmals eine Typologie vorzulegen, die weit über die Zeit um 1800 und die Literatur hinaus zeichenhafte Verfahren im Dienste der »Verewigung« zu beschreiben vermag. Semiotics of Eternalization At the interface of literary and cultural studies as well as semiotics, this monograph systematically examines intralinguistic procedures intended to record information for eternity. It succeeds, for the first time, in presenting a typology that describes semiotic procedures in the pursuit of »eternalization« that are not only limited to the period around 1800.     This book offers a revisionist account of poetry and embodiment from Milton to Romanticism. Scholars have made much of the period's theories of matter, with some studies equating the eighteenth century's modernity with its materialism. Yet the Enlightenment in Britain also brought bold new arguments for the immateriality of spirit and evocative claims about an imminent spirit realm. Protestant religious writing was of two minds about futurity, swinging back and forth between patience for the resurrected body and desire for the released soul. This ancient pattern carried over, the book argues, into understandings of poetry as a modern devotional practice. 0A range of authors agreed that poems can provide a foretaste of the afterlife, but they disagreed about what kind of future state the imagination should seek. The mortalist impulse-exemplified by John Milton and by Romantic poets Anna Letitia Barbauld and William Wordsworth-is to overcome the temptation of disembodiment and to restore spirit to its rightful home in matter. The spiritualist impulse-driving eighteenth-century verse by Mark Akenside, Elizabeth Singer Rowe, and Edward Young-is to break out of bodily repetition and enjoy the detached soul's freedom in advance. Although the study isolates these two tendencies, each needed the other as a source in the Enlightenment, and their productive opposition didn't end with Romanticism. The final chapter identifies an alternative Romantic vision that keeps open the possibility of a disembodied poetics, and the introduction considers present-day Anglophone writers who put it into practice

    Georg Forster est une des figures des Lumières allemandes tardives qui prête le plus à controverse. Il traverse au cours de sa vie différents espaces géographiques et culturels dans lesquels se déploient au XVIIIe siècle des modalités nouvelles de transmission du savoir. Le réseau traditionnel de production et de transmission du savoir, les universités, se double au siècle des Lumières de réseaux parallèles qui témoignent de l’essor de l’intérêt pour la connaissance scientifique dans des cercles plus larges de lettrés. Forster lui-même, de par sa formation d’autodidacte, se trouve à l’intersection de différentes écoles de pensées et traditions nationales, ce qui constitue la richesse de ses écrits. Lors de son voyage autour du monde, Forster est confronté à l'autre absolu, le « sauvage », mais aussi à l'autre relatif, le « civilisé » qui ne se comporte pas comme tel. Cela le conduit à une réflexion sur ce que sont les Lumières : dans quelle mesure sont-elles conformes à la réalité observée dans les sociétés européennes, et peuvent-elles être conçues au seul plan théorique. Or Forster accorde, dans cette réflexion, une place centrale à la perfectibilité. Le néologisme de Rousseau symbolise parfaitement à la fois la progression dans tous les domaines de la connaissance qui caractérise les Lumières, ainsi que leur grande ambivalence.
