    Considering the works "Zeit-Zeugen. Inhaftiert in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen" (1996), edited by Gabriele Camphausen, "Folterzelle 36 Berlin-Pankow. Erlebnisbericht einer Stasihaft" (1993) by Timo Zilli, "Ein guter Kampf. Fakten, Daten, Erinnerungen 1945-1954" (1998) by politician Ewald Ernst, "Die Stasi war mein Eckermann: oder mein Leben mit der Wanze" (1991) by writer Erich Loest, and "Geboren am 13. August. Der Sozialismus und ich" (2004) by journalist Jens Bisky, the aim of this article is to sketch a brief study on the diverse forms and phases of the violence as an instrument of power, practiced by the State of the SED in the German Democratic Republic in the 40 years of its existence, as well as discuss some theoretical aspects, focusing especially on the concept of "literature as testimony". The five analyzed reports of auto-biographical nature adopt a crucially critical tone concerning the encroachments in a totalitarian State. "Overcoming Walls" in the 20 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, from this point of view, implies a denouncement attitude against forgetfulness concerning a traumatic past. ; O objetivo do presente artigo é esboçar, a partir da interpretação das obras "Zeit-Zeugen. Inhaftiert in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen" (1996), organizada por Gabriele Camphausen, "Folterzelle 36 Berlin-Pankow. Erlebnisbericht einer Stasihaft" (1993), de Timo Zilli, "Ein guter Kampf. Fakten, Daten, Erinnerungen 1945-1954" (1998) do político Ewald Ernst, "Die Stasi war mein Eckermann: oder mein Leben mit der Wanze" (1991), do escritor Erich Loest, e "Geboren am 13. August.     This article discusses the change of paradigms perceived in Germany's Jewish community in the first decades of the 19th. Century, as a result of the fall of the walls which until that time separated Jews from their Christian German neighbours. The triumph of the ideas of Illuminism and the rapid penetration of these ideas in a community which longed for social integration, and which had hitherto been discriminated because of its ethnic and religious background, stimulated the adoption of new world views and new concepts of nationality and spirituality among Jews who had recently left the walls of the Ghettoes behind. One of the central passages in this change process is described by Berthold Auerbach (1812-1882) as the transformation of the idea of 'Revelation' into 'Bildung' – a cardinal concept in the 19th Century German culture. This seems to explain German Jews' affinity with the humanistic culture of their time: it now appears to occupy the central role which had hitherto been reserved to religious studies. ; Este artigo trata da rápida substituição de paradigmas que se processa no seio da comunidade judaica alemã nas primeiras décadas do século 19, como resultado da derrubada dos muros que, até então, separavam os judeus dos alemães cristãos. O triunfo das idéias do Iluminismo bem como sua rápida penetração no âmbito de uma comunidade ansiosa por integração numa sociedade que prometia a igualdade entre todos os seus membros, independentemente de sua origem étnica ou religiosa, estimulou, entre os judeus egressos dos guetos, a adoção de novas visões de mundo e de novos conceitos de nacionalidade e espiritualidade. Uma das passagens centrais nesse processo de mudança é descrita pelo escritor Berthold Auerbach (1812-1882) como a transformação da idéia de 'Revelação', central à tradição judaica, em 'Bildung', fundamental na cultura alemã do século 19.     This paper aims to study the literary genre tragedy and investigate how it can be truly identified in the works of two authors of the German Enlightenment and Classicism: G. E. Lessing and F. Schiller. In order to reach this goal, it is necessary first to step back to the Greek antiquity and study the origins of this type of text. Additionally, some titles by Shakespeare and Racine will be taken into consideration as further support of our claims. ; Este artigo tem como objetivo proceder a um breve levantamento do gênero tragédia e verificar até que ponto ele está realmente representado no Iluminismo e no Classicismo alemão dentro da obra de G. E. Lessing e de F. Schiller. Para tanto, é necessário recuarmos no tempo até a Antiguidade clássica e estudarmos os fundamentos desse tipo de texto. O exame de alguns títulos dos autores propostos será, antes, devidamente respaldado pela apreciação de dois estágios da história da tragédia: em Shakespeare e Racine. ; Absicht des Aufsatzes ist es, eine kurze Aufhebung der literarischen Gattung Tragödie auszuführen und nachzusehen, inwiefern sie in der deutschen Aufklärung und Klassik besonders in den Werken G. E. Lessings und F. Schillers tatsächlich dargestellt ist. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, ist es zuerst einmal notwendig zurück bis zur Antike zu greifen und dort die Grundlinien dieser Art Text zu studieren. Die Untersuchung mancher Titel der erwähnten Dichter wird noch präziser durch die Miteinbeziehung der Werke Shakespeares und Racines in diesen Beitrag.

    This article results from a research carried out between April and June of 2010 in the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros at the Universidade de São Paulo, in which a complete list of titles related to the German language and culture was collected from João Guimarães Rosa's personal library. Alongside a description of the procedures taken, we offer a comment on some of the most important aspects of the material analysed, including its recurrent themes and features, such as the marginalia found in volumes by authors like Nietzsche, Kafka and Erich Auerbach, as well as on the general context of Guimarães Rosa's German readings. We intend to contribute to the studies of Guimarães Rosa's literary sources, and also to throw light on an object that may be of future interest within the German studies in Brazil. ; O artigo resulta de pesquisa realizada entre os meses de abril e junho de 2010 no Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (USP) e apresenta a listagem completa dos títulos pertencentes à biblioteca de João Guimarães Rosa que de algum modo se relacionam à língua e cultura alemãs. Descrevemos nosso procedimento e procuramos privilegiar alguns aspectos do material estudado, elaborando uma introdução ao levantamento, comentando as presenças mais significativas, os temas recorrentes e a marginália encontrada em volumes de autores como Nietzsche, Kafka e Erich Auerbach, bem como o contexto da relação de Guimarães Rosa com as leituras alemãs. Intentamos contribuir no estudo de fontes da obra do autor de "Grande sertão: veredas" e desejamos por fim divulgar um objeto de provável interesse no âmbito dos estudos germanísticos brasileiros.

    This paper aims to study how two of the most productive German theories from the sixties and seventies of the last century - Hans Robert Jauss' Rezeptionsästhetik and Jürgen Habermas' Kommunikatives Handeln - could be woven together in order to make possible new insights over a particular German literary genre. ; Este texto tem por objetivo recontextualizar uma das teorias literárias mais produtivas surgidas na segunda metade do século XX, na medida em que ela interagiu com conceitos filosóficos amadurecidos na mesma época. Em particular, pretendemos discutir o modo como a Estética da Recepção, desenvolvida ao longo dos anos 1960 e 1970, na Universidade de Konstanz, pôde e ainda pode proporcionar iluminações à literatura quando associada aos estudos de Jürgen Habermas junto à Escola de Frankfurt, também ao longo daquelas décadas e das seguintes. ; In diesem Aufsatz soll eine der produktivsten literaturwissenschaftlichen Theorien, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts entstand, neu betrachtet werden. Das Ziel ist erfolgsversprechend, weil sich diese Theorie mit zeitgenössischen philosophischen Begriffen Jürgen Habermas' auseinandersetzt. Im Besonderen soll untersucht werden, wie die während der sechziger und siebziger Jahre in Süddeutschland entwickelte Rezeptionsästhetik immer noch imstande ist, neue Einsichten auf ein bestimmtes Literaturgenre zu ermöglichen.

    The present article seeks to analyze the influence that contemporary methods of literary writing and modes of thought used on the American continent have had on other literary niches, having as a specific example, Germany. For that, the focus will fall on the German historical novel "Rede des toten Kolumbus am Tag des jüngsten Gerichts" (1992), from the author Hans Christoph Buch. In the novel, it is observed how the rhetorical and aesthetical processes of narrative come close to what was considered as "new metafictional historical novel", according to studies by Aínsa (1988-1991), Menton (1993) and Fleck (2007). This model of artistic production is a result of the literary boom suffered in Latin America, amidst the 20th century, thus showing how, after a long time, the Americas start to influence the writings of other continents and, specially, Europe. Studies by Lukács, regarding historical novels, and Uslar Pietri (1990), regarding "Magic Realism", also make themselves useful, once that the delimitations of the literary genre, as well as its main characteristics, are possible of being observed in Buch's novel. ; O presente artigo procura analisar a influência que a escrita literária peculiar e os modos de pensamento contemporâneo em voga no continente americano alcançaram em outros nichos literários tendo, como exemplo específico a Alemanha. Para isso, o foco recairá sobre o romance histórico alemão "Rede des toten Kolumbus am Tag des jüngsten Gerichts" (1992), do autor Hans Christoph Buch. Nele, observa-se como os processos retóricos e estéticos da narrativa se assemelham àquilo que foi considerado como "novo romance histórico latinoamericano", segundo estudos de Aínsa (1988-1991), Menton (1993), Fleck (2007) de outros. Este modelo de produção artística é uma das formas originais do boom literário ocorrido na América Latina, em meados do século XX, demonstrando, assim, como, após muito tempo, as Américas começam a influenciar a escrita de outros continentes e, principalmente, a Europa.     This paper approaches questions concerning categories such as regional and universal and the exhaustion of the latter as qualifying criterion applied to regional literature works. On the other hand, there are theoretical and methodological contributions developed in the German academic field (Scheichel 1993; Stüben 2002; Grywatsch 2008), where the regional literature finds a favoured space in the discussions, and the criteria for measuring the works quality are built relying on sociological aspects of production and reception into regional and supraregional contexts. ; Neste artigo, abordam-se questões pertinentes às categorias do regional e do universal e ao consequente esvaziamento desta última como critério de qualificação de obras literárias regionais. Na contrapartida, trazem-se contribuições teóricas e metodológicas desenvolvidas no meio acadêmico alemão (SCHEICHEL 1993; STÜBEN 2002; GRYWATSCH 2008), onde a literature regional encontra um espaço privilegiado nos debates, e os critérios de mensuração da qualidade das obras são construídos com base em aspectos sociológicos de produção e recepção dentro dos âmbitos regional e suprarregional.

    The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of some of the main characteristics of Robert Walser's short story "Kleist in Thun", in an attempt to reflect on how the literary text can establish a dialogue with tradition. This is achieved by the fictionalisation of the character of a real author, more specifically by the narrative genre often used by Walser: the portrayal. ; O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar algumas das principais características do conto "Kleist in Thun", de Robert Walser, na tentativa de refletir sobre como o texto literário é capaz de estabelecer um diálogo com a tradição, através da ficcionalização da figura de um autor, especificamente através de um gênero narrativo praticado por Walser, o retrato.

    Franz Kafka's critical fortune is rich in relating the writer's way to construct his own narrative associated sometimes with themes treated in Kleist's literary works. In support of my reflections upon this issue, I have focused on the essays by two Brazilian literary critics who have revealed aspects of this relation: Otto Maria Carpeaux and Luiz Costa Lima. Many decades separate one from the other; however, both seem to have confluence lines on Kafka's approach to Kleist's work. After presenting aspects of Kleist-Kafka relation based on a critical background, I looked for references about Kleist in Kafka's non-literary texts, in order to establish a foundation for what is said by the critics mentioned in this essay. ; A fortuna crítica sobre Franz Kafka é pródiga em relacionar o modo de o escritor construir sua narrativa e algo dos próprios temas com a produção kleistiana. Como uma forma de refletir sobre isso, atentarei para dois críticos que expuseram aspectos desta relação em solo brasileiro: Otto Maria Carpeaux e Luiz Costa Lima. Distados várias décadas, os dois parecem, contudo, possuir certas linhas de confluência na abordagem kleistiana da obra de Franz Kafka. Após expor aspectos da relação Kleist-Kafka nos recortes da crítica brasileira, buscarei referências a Kleist em textos não literários de Kafka com a finalidade de encontrar neles um fundamento para o que é afirmado pelos críticos tratados neste ensaio.
