Did Euclid prove Elements I, 12? The early modern debate on intersections and continuity / Vincenzo De Risi -- Numbers and paths : Henry Savile's manuscript treatises on the Euclidean theory of proportion / Robert Goulding -- Reading by drawing. The changing nature of mathematical diagrams in seventeenth-century England / Yelda Nasifoglu -- Interpreting mathematical error : Tycho's problematic diagram and readers' responses / Renee Raphael -- Reading mathematics in the English collegiate-humanist universities / Mordechai Feingold -- Tutor, antiquarian, and almost a practitioner : Brian Twyne's readings of mathematics / Richard J. Edward bernard's planned edition of Euclid and its scholarly afterlife in late seventeenth-century Oxford / Philip Beeley -- 'The admonitions of a good-natured reader' : marks of use in Georgian mathematical textbooks / Benjamin Wardhaugh -- Instrumental reading : towards a typology of use in early modern practical mathematical texts / Boris Jardine -- 'Several choice collections' in geometry, astronomy, and chronology : using and collecting mathematics in early modern England / Kevin Tracey. "By defining and illuminating the distinctive world of early modern mathematical reading, the volume seeks to close the gap between the history of mathematics as a history of texts and history of mathematics as part of the broader history of human culture"--

Introduction: The Sociocultural Lives of Edwardian Book Inscriptions -- Edwardian Book Inscriptions: Their History, Types, and Patterns of Use -- Inscribers, Owners, and Readers: Humanizing Edwardian Book Inscriptions -- Reading Preferences, Attitudes, and Responses: Exploring Book Culture Through Edwardian Book Inscriptions -- The Materiality of Edwardian Book Inscriptions: A Multimodal Ethnohistorical Perspective -- Beyond Ownership: The Multifaceted Nature of Edwardian Book Inscriptions -- Life, Death, and Rebirth: Tracing Edwardian Book Survival Through Inscriptive Evidence -- Epilogue: Rethinking Edwardian Book Inscriptions. "This innovative text draws on theories and methodologies from the fields of multimodality, ethnography, and literacy studies to explore the sociocultural significance of book ownership and book inscriptions in Edwardian Britain. The Sociocultural Functions of Edwardian Book Inscriptions draws on evidence gathered from historical records, archival documents, and the inscriptive practices of individuals from the Edwardian era to foreground the social, communicative, and performative functions of inscriptive practices and illustrate how material, lexical, and semiotic means were used to perform identity, contest social status, and forge relationships with others. The text adopts a unique ethnohistorical approach to multimodality, supporting the development of a typography of book inscriptions which will serve as a unique interpretive framework for analysis of literary artefacts in the context of broader socio-political forces. This text will benefit doctoral students, researchers, and academics in the fields of Literacy Studies, English language arts, and research methods in education more broadly. Those interested in British book history, anthropology, and 20th-century literature will also enjoy this volume. Lauren Alex O'Hagan is a Visiting Scholar in the Centre for Language and Communication Research at Cardiff University, UK"--

"The field of electronic literature has a familiar catchphrase, "You can't do it on paper." But the field has in fact never gone paperless. Reaching back to early experiments with digital writing in the mainframe era and then moving through the personal computer and Internet revolutions, this book traces the changing forms of paper on which e-lit artists have drawn, including continuous paper, documentation, disk sleeves, packaging, and even artists' books. Paper Electronic Literature attests that digital literature's old media elements have much to teach us about the cultural and physical conditions in which we compute; the creativity that new media artists have shown in their dealings with old media; and the distinctively electronic issues that confront digital artists. Moving between avant-garde works and popular ones, fiction writing and poetry generation, Richard Hughes Gibson reveals the diverse ways in which paper has served as a component within electronic literature, particularly in facilitating interactive experiences for users. This important study develops a new critical paradigm for appreciating the multifaceted material innovation that has long marked digital literature"--
