    Main description: Das Buch liefert eine neuartige Geschichte der deutschen Literatur von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Im Sinne einer Gesamtgeschichte der gelesenen Literatur beschreibt es nicht nur die Höhenkammliteratur der Bildungseliten, sondern auch die Repräsentationsliteratur der Führungsschichten, die Unterhaltungsliteratur der Mittelschichten sowie die Kompensationsliteratur der Deklassierten. Jede dieser vier Literaturen hat ihre eigenen Funktionen und ihre eigene Entwicklungsdynamik. Das Buch zeigt, daß die Landkarte der deutschen Literatur noch zahlreiche weiße Flecken aufweist, ohne deren Beseitigung auch eine Positionsbestimmung der bereits genauer erforschten Zonen nicht möglich ist. Von den herkömmlichen Formen der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung unterscheidet sich diese Literaturgeschichte durch die konsequente Berücksichtigung des aktuellen Forschungsstandes der Kultursoziologie, der Leserforschung und der Medienwirkungsanalyse

    Building a National Literature boldly takes issue with traditional literary criticism for its failure to explain how literature as a body is created and shaped by institutional forces. Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Hohendahl considers such key aspects of the process in Germany as the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the delineation of the borders of German literature, the idea of its history, the understanding of its cultural function, and the notion of a canon of major and minor authors

    The consumer revolution of the eighteenth century brought new and exotic commodities to Europe from abroad—coffee, tea, spices, and new textiles to name a few. Yet one of the most widely distributed luxury commodities in the period was not new at all, and was produced locally: the book. In Necessary Luxuries, Matt Erlin considers books and the culture around books during this period, focusing specifically on Germany where literature, and the fine arts in general, were the subject of soul-searching debates over the legitimacy of luxury in the modern world.Building on recent work done in the fields of consumption studies as well as the New Economic Criticism, Erlin combines intellectual-historical chapters (on luxury as a concept, luxury editions, and concerns about addictive reading) with contextualized close readings of novels by Campe, Wieland, Moritz, Novalis, and Goethe. As he demonstrates, artists in this period were deeply concerned with their status as luxury producers. The rhetorical strategies they developed to justify their activities evolved in dialogue with more general discussions regarding new forms of discretionary consumption. By emphasizing the fragile legitimacy of the fine arts in the period, Necessary Luxuries offers a fresh perspective on the broader trajectory of German literature in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, recasting the entire period in terms of a dynamic unity, rather than simply as a series of literary trends and countertrends

He explores how writers, artists, and critics such as Gottfried Keller, Theodor Fontane, and Walter Benjamin drew on the ancient practice of divination, connecting the Greek idea of sympathetic magic to the German aesthetic concept of the attunement of mood and atmosphere.Downing deftly traces the genealogical connection between reading and art in classical antiquity, nineteenth-century realism, and modernism, attending to the ways in which the modern re-enchantment of the world—both in nature and human society—consciously engaged ancient practices that aimed at preternatural prediction.     Main description: Die Untersuchung fragt exemplarisch nach den sozialen Bedingungen des literarischen Lebens im Hessen-Darmstadt des 18. Jahrhunderts. Der empirisch-regionalhistorische Ansatz bedingt die Auswertung umfangreicher, auch archivalischer Quellen, die von Schulordnungen und Berufungsakten über Briefe und Zeitschriften bis zum literarischen 'Werk' eines Goethe oder Klinger reichen. Nach den Bildungsinstitutionen Gelehrtenschule und Universität wendet sich die Studie den literarischen Tätigkeitsfeldern des Intellektuellen, dann aber auch der Integration höfischer und weiblicher Leserschichten in den Literaturbetrieb zu. Es zeigt sich, daß literarische Aktivität im 18. Jahrhundert stets in funktionalem Bezug zu den übergeordneten Bemühungen des Individuums um seine Identität innerhalb der Ständegesellschaft steht

    Main description: The study inquires into the social conditions governing literary life in 18th century Hessen-Darmstadt as an example of such connections at the time. The approach is empirical and based on regional history. This involves the evaluation of extensive sources, some of them archival, extending from school regulations and appointment documents, letters and journals to the literary works of such figures as Goethe or Klinger. After a discussion of the scholarly academy and the university as institutions of higher learning, the study turns to literary activity among intellectuals and the integration of courtly and female readerships into the process of literary production. The conclusion is that at a functional level literary activity in the 18th century was invariably related to superordinate endeavors by individuals to define and establish an identity for themselves within corporative society

    Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund (GBV)

     

    Der Band enthält eine Zusammenstellung ausgewählter Aufsätze der Marburger Mediävistin Christa Bertelsmeier-Kierst, die für die Publikation überarbeitet, aktualisiert und durch ein Register erschlossen wurden. Die Untersuchungen umfassen die Themenfelder Literatur- und Überlieferungsgeschichte, Lyrik, Recht, Frauenfrömmigkeit und Boccaccio-Rezeption. Sie werden in der Einleitung in das wissenschaftliche Werk der Autorin eingeordnet, das traditionelle Fächergrenzen überschreitet, den gesamteuropäischen Kontext berücksichtigt und gängige Forschungsauffassungen in Frage stellt. Christa Bertelsmeier-Kierst richtet ihr Interesse stets auf den kulturellen Kontext und die Materialität von Literatur. Als implizites Lehr- und Forschungsprogramm lässt sich das Konzept einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten, kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten und komparatistisch ausgerichteten Mediävistik fassen, das für die Zukunft des Faches wegweisend sein dürfte.

    Die Untersuchung fragt exemplarisch nach den sozialen Bedingungen des literarischen Lebens im Hessen-Darmstadt des 18. Jahrhunderts. Der empirisch-regionalhistorische Ansatz bedingt die Auswertung umfangreicher, auch archivalischer Quellen, die von Schulordnungen und Berufungsakten über Briefe und Zeitschriften bis zum literarischen 'Werk' eines Goethe oder Klinger reichen. Nach den Bildungsinstitutionen Gelehrtenschule und Universität wendet sich die Studie den literarischen Tätigkeitsfeldern des Intellektuellen, dann aber auch der Integration höfischer und weiblicher Leserschichten in den Literaturbetrieb zu. Es zeigt sich, daß literarische Aktivität im 18. Jahrhundert stets in funktionalem Bezug zu den übergeordneten Bemühungen des Individuums um seine Identität innerhalb der Ständegesellschaft steht. The study inquires into the social conditions governing literary life in 18th century Hessen-Darmstadt as an example of such connections at the time. The approach is empirical and based on regional history. This involves the evaluation of extensive sources, some of them archival, extending from school regulations and appointment documents, letters and journals to the literary works of such figures as Goethe or Klinger. After a discussion of the scholarly academy and the university as institutions of higher learning, the study turns to literary activity among intellectuals and the integration of courtly and female readerships into the process of literary production. The conclusion is that at a functional level literary activity in the 18th century was invariably related to superordinate endeavors by individuals to define and establish an identity for themselves within corporative society.

The approach is empirical and based on regional history. This involves the evaluation of extensive sources, some of them archival, extending from school regulations and appointment documents, letters and journals to the literary works of such figures as Goethe or Klinger. After a discussion of the scholarly academy and the university as institutions of higher learning, the study turns to literary activity among intellectuals and the integration of courtly and female readerships into the process of literary production. The conclusion is that at a functional level literary activity in the 18th century was invariably related to superordinate endeavors by individuals to define and establish an identity for themselves within corporative society.

In the sense of a history of literature as a whole, Jost Schneider describes the changing reading habits of the different strata within the German society. Biographical note: Jost Schneider ist Professor am Germanistischen Institut der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Main description: Das Buch liefert eine neuartige Geschichte der deutschen Literatur von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Im Sinne einer Gesamtgeschichte der gelesenen Literatur beschreibt es nicht nur die Höhenkammliteratur der Bildungseliten, sondern auch die Repräsentationsliteratur der Führungsschichten, die Unterhaltungsliteratur der Mittelschichten sowie die Kompensationsliteratur der Deklassierten. Jede dieser vier Literaturen hat ihre eigenen Funktionen und ihre eigene Entwicklungsdynamik. Das Buch zeigt, daß die Landkarte der deutschen Literatur noch zahlreiche weiße Flecken aufweist, ohne deren Beseitigung auch eine Positionsbestimmung der bereits genauer erforschten Zonen nicht möglich ist. Von den herkömmlichen Formen der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung unterscheidet sich diese Literaturgeschichte durch die konsequente Berücksichtigung des aktuellen Forschungsstandes der Kultursoziologie, der Leserforschung und der Medienwirkungsanalyse. It offers a global comparison of differently structured book markets and international book cultures. Bücher für alle verfügbar und zugänglich zu machen, war oberste Zielsetzung der Buchförderungsprogramme der UNESCO. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Maßnahmen, die die UNESCO weltweit zur Verbesserung der Produktions- und Distributionsstrukturen des Buches durchführte, und geht Fragen nach der Funktion des Buches in der Gesellschaft nach. Die Arbeitleistet damit einen Beitrag zur internationalen Buchhandelsgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

    Invoking Goethe's name has become fashionable again. With new methods and technologies of reading threatening to render literature virtual and insubstantial, we have the sense that "Goethe's ghosts" - the otherwise neglected voices and traditions that, finding their most trenchant expression in Goethe, inform the Western storehouse of literature - can show us long-forgotten dimensions of literature. Inspired by the distinguished Goethe scholar Jane Brown, whose life's work has called attention to the allegorical modes haunting the mimetic forms that dominate modern literature, the contributors to this volume take a rich variety of approaches to Goethe: cultural studies, history of the book, semiotics, deconstruction, colonial studies, feminism, childhood studies, and eco-criticism. The persistence, omnipresence, and modalities of the "ghosts" they find suggest that more than influence or standards is at issue here. Goethe's work informs current debates on nineteenth-century nationalism, while his Faust increasingly serves to express contemporary culture's anxiety about new technologies. The stubborn reappearance of these revenants testifies to more fundamental issues concerning the status of literature and the task of the reader.     This book was first published in 2006. Learning to read in medieval Germany meant learning to read and understand Latin as well as the pupils' own language. The teaching methods used in the medieval Abbey of St Gall survive in the translations and commentaries of the monk, scholar and teacher Notker Labeo (c.950–1022). Notker's pedagogic method, although deeply rooted in classical and monastic traditions, demonstrates revolutionary innovations that include providing translations in the pupils' native German, supplying structural commentary in the form of simplified word order and punctuation, and furnishing special markers that helped readers to perform texts out loud. Anna Grotans examines this unique interplay between orality and literacy in Latin and Old High German, and illustrates her study with many examples from Notker's manuscripts. As the editor of poetic paperbacks and literary journals, Leo von Seckendorf (1775-1809) was in written correspondence with nearly all the great authors from the period of the Late Enlightenment, to the Classical and the Romance periods. This vastly diverse correspondence, which has previously been only partially accessible, offers extensive insight into the functionality of the literary market at around 1800. With over 300 letters from Seckendorf's extensive and wide-spread estate and including a detailed commentary, this edition recognizes for the first time the importance of this extremely diverse correspondence, which is made accessible to the reader via a repertory and an index of letters.     "Medieval manuscripts resisted obsolescence. Made by highly specialised craftspeople (scribes, illuminators, book binders) with labour-intensive processes using exclusive and sometimes exotic materials (parchment made from dozens or hundreds of skins, inks and paints made from prized minerals, animals and plants), books were expensive and built to last. They usually outlived their owners. Rather than discard them when they were superseded, book owners found ways to update, amend and upcycle books or book parts. These activities accelerated in the fifteenth century. Most manuscripts made before 1390 were bespoke and made for a particular client, but those made after 1390 (especially books of hours) were increasingly made for an open market, in which the producer was not in direct contact with the buyer. Increased efficiency led to more generic products, which owners were motivated to personalise. It also led to more blank parchment in the book, for example, the backs of inserted miniatures and the blanks ends of textual components. Book buyers of the late fourteenth and throughout the fifteenth century still held onto the old connotations of manuscripts—that they were custom-made luxury items—even when the production had become impersonal. Owners consequently purchased books made for an open market and then personalised them, filling in the blank spaces, and even adding more components later. This would give them an affordable product, but one that still smacked of luxury and met their individual needs. They kept older books in circulation by amending them, attached items to generic books to make them more relevant and valuable, and added new prayers with escalating indulgences as the culture of salvation shifted. Rudy considers ways in which book owners adjusted the contents of their books from the simplest (add a marginal note, sew in a curtain) to the most complex (take the book apart, embellish the components with painted decoration, add more quires of parchment). By making sometimes extreme adjustments, book owners kept their books fashionable and emotionally relevant. This study explores the intersection of codicology and human desire.
