    Bemerkung(en):

    This essay suggests that Boccaccio uses the tale of Filippo Balducci in the Decameron to articulate his linguistic policy on sexual metaphor. By identifying a problem in calling women by their proper name, Balducci draws on the traditional conventions of turpiloquium, the sin of lewd speech, to highlight the dangers of direct sexual reference in a Christian context. The failure of his metaphor licenses the potential failure of Boccaccio's own metaphors and enables him to eschew authorial responsibility for sexual interpretations of his language. Boccaccio's meta-novella thus has important implications for the sexual rhetoric of the Decameron as a whole
