    In his first autobiographical writing, the Austrian author Thomas Bernhard attempts to show his public the reason why he became the provocative writer and outsider that he was. This paper intends to analyse how this image is constructed in the book by using a specific concept of victim as well as a provocative and subjective style. On the one hand he is successful in constructing a text in which his point of view and his personality are constantly present; on the other hand it includes diverse contradictions, which will be discussed throughout this article.

    This article deals with two short stories by Leopold Kompert (1822-1886), a Jewish author from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and one of the major names in a genre which became known as Ghettoliteratur. As all other authors in his genre, Kompert dealt mainly with the conflicts involved in the passage from the world of traditional Jewry towards 19th into modernity. But he did this in a typical Habsburg way. Rather then emphasizing the incompatibility between these two worlds, Kompert tries, on the one hand, to preserve the memory of the vanishing world of the Jewish Shtetl, and on the other hand to create a synthesis between this world and the multi-lingual and multi-cultural Austro-Hungarian Empire.

    This paper presents an overview of the central arguments of some studies and essays about Austrian literature (Menasse; Schmidt-Dengler; Sebald, Weiss, Zeyringer) that are concerned with the existence of a difference between the Austrian and other German language literatures. To illuminate the core points of these discussions, we will compare them to representative arguments about Austrian literature from post-war decades. The aim is to show that contemporary German literature studies in Austria do not dedicate themselves any more to the construction of an "Austrian myth" or to the search of an alleged "essence" of national literature. On the contrary, the construction of an "Austrian myth" has been replaced by analyses of this myth as well as the social and historical contexts that surround the literary production of the country. In spite of the argumentative discrepancies between the different approaches – which are closely aligned with the formation of the Austrian nation -, the continuing insistence on the part of contemporary German literature studies in Austria on the distinctiveness of Austrian literature is interesting to observe. ; In diesem Beitrag werden zentrale Argumente wissenschaftlicher Publikationen und Aufsätze (Menasse; Schmidt-Dengler; Sebald, Weiss, Zeyringer) über die österreichische Literatur zusammengefasst und näher beleuchtet, insbesondere jene, die sich auf die Eigenständigkeit der österreichischen Literatur neben anderen Literaturen in deutscher Sprache beziehen. Um diese Debatten in ihren historischen Zusammenhang zu stellen, werden sie mit theoretischen Ansätzen v.a. der Nachkriegszeit verglichen, die sich dem selben Thema widmen. So können wir feststellen, dass sich die jüngere österreichische Germanistik nicht mehr der Konstruktion eines "österreichischen Mythos" widmet, genauso wenig wie der Diskussion über das, was das "Wesen" der österreichischen Literatur ausmachen könnte. Diese Konstruktion wurde von der Analyse des "österreichischen Mythos" abgelöst, sowie von Diskussionen ...

    This article aims to investigate the correlation of thought between three leading names in the second half of the nineteenth century – Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Hugo von Hofmannsthal – that have addressed the crisis of male identity against the return of matriarchy. Considering the Vienna fin-de-siècle as a backdrop, female is presented here through Electra, a mythical heroine. In Hofmannsthal's homonymous play, she represents not only strengthening as the woman's own destruction. ; Este artigo tem por objetivo investigar a correlação de pensamento entre três importantes nomes da segunda metade do século XIX – Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud e Hugo von Hofmannsthal – que se debruçaram sobre as crises da identidade masculina frente ao retorno do matriarcado. Tendo a Viena fin-de-siècle como cenário, o feminino é apresentado aqui por intermédio de Electra, que no texto homônimo de Hofmannsthal representa não só o fortalecimento como a própria destruição da mulher.

    Nas eleições legislativas de 3 de Outubro de 1999, a Österreichische Volkspartei liderada por Wolfgang Schüssel forma governo com a terceira força partidária do país, a Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs, dirigida pelo controverso governador da Caríntia Jörg Haider que, com os seus discursos de cariz claramente xenófobo, lançou o olhar da Europa sobre a Áustria pelas piores razões. No rescaldo desta coligação, mediante um cenário que, em larga escala, parecia representar um retrocesso no passado, o escritor e ativista político austríaco de origem judaica Doron Rabinovici publica um texto no jornal israelita HaGalil, ao qual dá o curioso título “Doron R. und D. Rabinovici. Der nationale Doppler”. Trata-se, na verdade, de uma espécie de diálogo assumidamente esquizofrénico no qual Doron R., o israelita, interpela D. Rabinovici, o austríaco, e o desafia a repensarem a sua relação [.]. Em 2010, uma década após ter publicado este texto, Rabinovici regressa ao registo literário com Andernorts, romance onde parece retomar esse diálogo. Se, no final da década de noventa, D. Rabinovici, o austríaco, reconhece que se sente simultaneamente parte integrante da cidade de Viena, porém também um estranho, porque, no fundo, o seu país é responsável pela morte de milhões de membros do seu povo, o protagonista do romance aqui em apreço, Ethan Rosen, também ele um israelita que vive em Viena, tece considerações semelhantes, mas desta feita relativamente a Israel: “Er wusste sich zu Hause, fühlte sich so heimisch und fremd zugleich, da ihn die Sehnsucht erfaßte sofort wiederfortzufliegen”. (Rabinovici 2010, 80)

    Abordando o conjunto das chamadas "peças de fala" ("Sprechstücke"), as primeiras quatro obras escritas para o teatro ainda nos anos 60 por Peter Handke, Prêmio Nobel de Literatura de 2019, o ensaio busca localizar nelas mais do que o jogo autorreferencial alienado censurado por muitos num suposto pós-modernismo. Relacionando o projeto do autor com uma tradição modernista propriamente austríaca e com as preocupações de uma possível filosofia política da linguagem, investigamos essa dramaturgia como uma operação crítica em relação a um funcionamento coercitivo da linguagem, para ao fim relacionar esse interesse com sua posição na história do teatro, propondo seu papel chave para compreender a cena contemporânea. ; Addressing the set of so-called 'spoken plays" or "speech plays" ("Sprechstücke"), the first four works written for the theater in the 1960s by Peter Handke, 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature, the essay seeks to locate in them more than the alienated self-referential game condemned by many in a supposed postmodernism. Relating the author's project with a properly Austrian modernist tradition and with the concerns of a possible political philosophy of language, we investigate his playwriting as a critical operation in relation to the coercive function of language, in order to finally relate this interest to its position in theater history, proposing its key role in understanding the contemporary scene.

    Este dossiê temático - organizado por dois professores universitários brasileiros de nascimento austríaco - cujas contribuições abordam a Áustria e sua literatura no Brasil e no mundo, reune quinze artigos de pesquisadores austríacos, alemães e brasileiros das mais várias áreas de Letras além de Filosofia e de História. A motivação pela sua organização é homenagear a recentemente fundada Coleção Austríaca da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) que se entende como ponto de referência em assuntos de cultura, história e literatura austríacas em solo brasileiro e como porta-voz de cursos, eventos, exposições e projetos relacionados às mesmas.

    Este artigo propõe-se a mapear, por meio de seus registros literários, alguns momentos da longa e ambivalente história do processo de integração e assimilação dos judeus à cultura austro-alemã - uma história que se inicia já nos últimos anos do século XVIII, e cujos reflexos literários reverberam século XXI adentro. A contraposição entre uma visão essencialista de cultura e outra fundamentada no conceito alemão de 'Bildung' é o princípio fundamental que opera nos diferentes desdobramentos desta história aqui analisados, e gera dúvidas e perplexidades ainda hoje significativas para o estudo da literatura austro-judaica. ; This article aims at tracing the contours of the long and ambivalent history of the integration and assimilation of Jews to Austro-German Culture, by means of some literary renderings of this phenomenon. The beginnings of this process are to be found in the late 18th century, but its literary reflections shine well into the 21st century. The contraposition between an essentialist understanding of culture and a different one, based on the German idea of 'Bildung', are at the core of the different developments of this process analyzed here, generating doubts and perplexities which are still significant for the study of Austro-Jewish literature.

    Neste artigo, partimos de um momento representativo da história austríaca, no final dos anos 1950, marcado por alguns desenvolvimentos no plano da vida social que buscavam parceria e harmonia, sem lidar com seu passado em relação ao nazismo. Contra essa situação se insurgem alguns autores fundamentais para a literatura austríaca, buscando formalizações estéticas que efetivam uma localização histórica crítica, que deve muito à perspectiva do materialista histórico benjaminiano. O recorte desse artigo recai sobre duas obras: o conto "Unter Mördern und Irren" (escrito em 1956-7, publicado em 1961), de Ingeborg Bachmann e o romance "Auslöschung" (1986), de Thomas Bernhard. ; The background of this study is the end of the 1950s, a representative moment in Austrian history, which was characterized by some developments in social life. These developments searched for partnership and harmony, without dealing with the country's past in relation to Nazism. Against this situation, some important writers of Austrian literature appear and are guided by aesthetic formalizations that promote a critical historic setting, mainly due to Benjamin's historical-materialist approach. The aim of this paper is to analyze two literary texts: the short story "Unter Mördern und Irren" (written in 1956-7, published in 1961), by Ingeborg Bachmann and the novel "Auslöschung" (1986), by Thomas Bernhard.

    Johann Nepomuk Nestroy (1801-1862) foi um dos dramaturgos mais importantes da história do teatro da Áustria. Ator e autor aclamado durante seu tempo, é também nome de referência e enorme influência para muitos escritores austríacos canônicos do século XX e do começo do XXI, que até hoje se definem como devedores de sua poética dramatúrgica (por exemplo, Karl Kraus ou Elfriede Jelinek). Este artigo, além de destacar o papel do dramaturgo com "ancestral" para uma parte da literatura austríaca, lança um olhar sobre a única tradução de uma peça de Nestroy disponível no Brasil ("Cacique Vento-da-Tarde ou O festim do horror", publicada em 1990), com o intuito de colocar em questão a visão recorrente da obra de Nestroy como "intraduzível". ; Johann Nepomuk Nestroy (1801-1862) was one of the most important playwrights in the history of Austrian theater. He was an acclaimed actor and author during his time, and he is also a reference writer and a huge influence for many canonical Austrian writers in the 20th and early 21st centuries, who today define themselves as debtors of his dramaturgical poetics (for instance, Karl Kraus ou Elfriede Jelinek). The article highlights the role of Nestroy as an "ancestor" for part of Austrian literature, and also looks at the only translation of a Nestroy play available in Brazil ("Cacique Vento-da-Tarde ou O festim do horror", 1990), in order to call into question the common view of Nestroy's work as "intranslatable".
