    Diese Studie bestimmt die Metamorphose als eine poetische Anschauungsform, in der die literarische Imagination den Fluß der Zeit in anschauliche Zeitpunkte zerlegt. Begegnet das Konzept einer kontinuierlichen Metamorphose v.a. in naturphilosophischen Verwandlungsanschauungen, so reflektieren und kritisieren komplexe Verwandlungserzählungen insbesondere das Konzept einer diskontinuierlichen Metamorphose, das in Mythologie und Religion eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Der systematischen Rekonstruktion einer Poetik epischer Metamorphosen folgen exemplarische Interpretationen von Ovids »Metamorphosen± sowie von Verwandlungserzählungen des 20. Jahrhunderts (Kafka und Carl Einstein, Ch. Ransmayr und Steffen Mensching) The study identifies metamorphosis as a form of poetic contemplation in which literary imagination divides the flow of time into graphic timepoints. Whereas the concept of ongoing metamorphosis is most frequently encountered in nature philosophy, complex metamorphosis narratives notably reflect upon and criticize the concept of discrete metamorphosis which plays a significant role in mythology and religion. The systematic reconstruction of a poetics of epic metamorphoses is followed by interpretations of Ovid's »Metamorphoses« and relevant 20th century narratives by Kafka, Carl Einstein, Christoph Ransmayr and Steffen Mensching

    Main description: This study explores three works in which the protagonist undertakes to fashion a literary artwork out of himself: Ovid's »Ars Amatoria«, Kierkegaard's »Diary of the Seducer«, and Thomas Mann's »Felix Krull«. For each work, particular attention is paid to the self-conscious interplay between the author's project of book-making and the character's project of self-making, as well as to the effect of changing notions of self-identity on the protagonist's attempt at life as literature.     "The Medicamina Faciei Femineae is a didactic elegy that showcases an early example of Ovid's trademark combination of poetic instruction and trivial subject matter. Exploring female beauty and cosmeceuticals, with particular emphasis on the concept of cultus, the poem presents five practical recipes for treatments for Roman women. Covering both didactic parody and pharmacological reality, this deceptively complex poem possesses wit and vivacity and provides an important insight into Roman social mores and day-to-day activities. The first full study in English devoted to this little-researched but multi-faceted poem, Ovid on Cosmetics includes an introduction that situates the poem within its literary heritage of didactic and elegiac poetry, its place in Ovid's oeuvre and its relevance to social values, personal aesthetics and attitudes to female beauty in Roman society. The Latin text is presented on parallel p. alongside a new translation, and all Latin words and phrases are translated for the non-specialist reader. Detailed commentary notes elucidate the text and individual phrases still further. Ovid on Cosmetics presents and explicates this witty, subversive yet significant poem.     Il presente saggio costituisce la seconda edizione (notevolmente) ampliata del saggio omonimo, pubblicato la prima volta dal Centro Studi Anthologia Latina di Perugia nel 2016 ed esaurito in breve volger di tempo. Scaturito dalla consapevolezza che, nella teoria come nella prassi editoriale, il divario tra congettura e restituzione appare talora quasi impercettibile, il saggio si propone di mostrare, con numerosi exempla critico-testuali pertinenti ad autori che vanno da Ovidio alla fine dell'età tardoantica, che anche la migliore congettura ope ingenii - ritenuta 'palmare' dalla comunità scientifica - vel raro vel numquam può aspirare a sanare il testo in maniera definitiva e incontrovertibile. La scelta pragmatica effettuata (affiancare a congetture comunemente accreditate altre congetture che mirano a scalzarle, nell'intento di mettere a nudo la precarietà di ogni congettura in quanto tale) consente di entrare subito e in maniera concreta nel merito della discussione su come è e come si fa o andrebbe fatta una congettura. Per cui il criterio di esposizione rovescia, in certo senso, il metodo tradizionale in quanto non detta regole in astratto e fa vedere come si procede nel discutere e sanare testi che presentano corruttele, anche non immediatamente evidenti. In questo senso, il saggio rappresenta una sintesi tra teoria e prassi ecdotica.****************The present essay constitutes the second (considerably) increased edition of the essay with the same title, published for the first time by "Centro Studi Anthologia Latina" in Perugia in 2016 and sold out in a short space of time. Arising from the awareness that, in theory as in editorial practice, the gap between conjecture and restitution sometimes appears almost imperceptible, the essay aims to show, with numerous textual exempla pertinent to authors ranging from Ovid to the end of the late ancient age, that even the best conjecture ope ingenii - considered evident by the scientific community - vel raro vel numquam can aspire to remedy the text in a definitive and incontrovertible way. The pragmatic choice made (alongside commonly accepted conjectures with other conjectures that aim to undermine them, in order to reveal the precariousness of each conjecture as such) allows to enter immediately and concretely in the merit of the discussion on how it is and how conjecture is made or should be made.

Begegnet das Konzept einer kontinuierlichen Metamorphose v.a. in naturphilosophischen Verwandlungsanschauungen, so reflektieren und kritisieren komplexe Verwandlungserzählungen insbesondere das Konzept einer diskontinuierlichen Metamorphose, das in Mythologie und Religion eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Der systematischen Rekonstruktion einer Poetik epischer Metamorphosen folgen exemplarische Interpretationen von Ovids »Metamorphosen« sowie von Verwandlungserzählungen des 20. Jahrhunderts (Kafka und Carl Einstein, Ch. Ransmayr und Steffen Mensching)

    Main description: The study identifies metamorphosis as a form of poetic contemplation in which literary imagination divides the flow of time into graphic timepoints. Whereas the concept of ongoing metamorphosis is most frequently encountered in nature philosophy, complex metamorphosis narratives notably reflect upon and criticize the concept of discrete metamorphosis which plays a significant role in mythology and religion. The systematic reconstruction of a poetics of epic metamorphoses is followed by interpretations of Ovid's »Metamorphoses« and relevant 20th century narratives by Kafka, Carl Einstein, Christoph Ransmayr and Steffen Mensching
