    Particles have no specific lexical function per se and must be associated with another word or phrase to impart meaning. Thus, they develop manifold forms of polyfunctionality. They can express emotion, and when used interactively in everyday situations, they are dependent upon the particular features of the context. While the German language uses particles extensively, French more commonly uses alternative devices to expressa speaker's attitude toward his or her utterance, as will be shown by the example of ja in the speeches of the narrator and the characters of the novel 'The Call of the Toad' by Günter Grass.

    Der Beitrag, der an einen am 22.05.2017 an der Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lissabon gehaltenen Vortrag anknüpft, setzt sich mit der Entstehung der Fremdsprachendidaktik und Fremdsprachenforschung in Deutschland aus der Philologie seit dem 19. Jahrhundert auseinander. In besonderem Maße wird dabei das Wechselspiel zwischen Unterrichtspraxis und Philologie einerseits sowie Philologie und Fremdsprachendidaktik/Fremdsprachenforschung andererseits fokussiert. Es wird aufgezeigt, wie im 19. Jahrhundert die Bedürfnisse einer zunehmend institutionalisierten Lehrerbildung zur Etablierung der Neuphilologie an den Universitäten führten, die freilich den Fremdsprachenunterricht nicht direkt in ihren Ausbildungsprogrammen berücksichtigte. Gleichzeitig entwickelte sich aber v.a. auf der Ebene der Schulen ein Diskurs, der als Fremdsprachendidaktik ante litteram bezeichnet werden kann. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhundert führt das zunehmende Interesse etwa einer Angewandten Linguistik an Fragestellungen des Fremdsprachenlernens schließlich über die aus heutiger Sicht als Etappe anzusehende Konstituierung der Sprachlehrforschung zur Ausdifferenzierung einer Fremdsprachendidaktik / Fremdsprachenforschung als eigenständiger wissenschaftlicher Teildisziplin. Dies soll am Beispiel der romanischen Sprachen aufgezeigt werden.

The newly founded journal continues and accompanies the Corpora for Language and Aging Research (CLARe) network's series of conferences started in 2014. Research in this field is confronted with major challenges, including: (1) to account for specific facets of age while not ignoring its inherent dynamics of aging; (2) to promote expertise in different related linguistic disciplines and at the same time develop its a coherent visibility; (3) to avoid stereotypes while addressing specific communicative issues in the society, as well as in families and in care institutions, covering an ever growing range of languages and varieties.     Das aus der Zusammenarbeit von Klaus Peter Dencker und Giovanni Fontana hervorgegangene Buch No A <-> No Z steht auf mehreren Ebenen im Zeichen einer Poetik des Dialogs ‚zwischen‘ verschiedenen Instanzen, Medien und ästhetischen Verfahrensweisen: Auf ein Schnittfeld unterschiedlicher ästhetischer Diskurse beziehbar ist es insbesondere diversen Konzepten und Auslegungsoptionen von Zwischenräumen (Leerstellen, Spielräumen etc.) verbunden. Als ein aus Text- und Bildelementen komponiertes Künstlerbuch lotet es Spannungen und Affinitäten zwischen Text und Bild aus, als Produkt der Kooperation zwischen zwei Dichtern bildet es den Verlauf des künstlerischen Dialogs von Dencker und Fontana durch seinen Aufbau ab. Exemplarisch demonstriert es, wie das Buch zum Raum einer produktiven Auseinandersetzung zwischen den künstlerischen Sprachen der beiden Autoren wird – und reiht sich damit auf programmatische Weise zwischen andere Buchpublikationen Denckers, Fontanas und der „redfoxpress“ ein. ; The book No A <-> No Z, a collaboration between Klaus Peter Dencker and Giovanni Fontana, is characterized on several levels by a poetics of dialogue ‘between’ different instances, media, and aesthetic procedures: Relatable to an intersection of different aesthetic discourses, it is especially connected to diverse concepts and interpretive options of interstices (gaps, ‘play/wiggle room’, etc.). As an artist’s book composed of text and image elements, it explores tensions and affinities between text and image; as a product of cooperation between two poets, it maps the course of Dencker’s and Fontana’s artistic dialogue through its structure. It exemplarily demonstrates how the book becomes the space of a productive confrontation between the artistic languages of the two authors – and thus programmatically joins other book publications by Dencker, Fontana and the “redfoxpress”.

    Graphische Literatur und visuelle Poesie können in mindestens zweifacher Hinsicht als Künste des Dazwischen verstanden werden: Zum einen kombinieren sie Bild und Text als ästhetische und semantische Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten, zum anderen reflektieren sie diese Zwischenstellung in intermedialen Verweisen und einer Affinität zu Themen zwischenräumlicher, marginal(isiert)er Erfahrung. Im mehr­dimensionalen Verhältnis von Schriftzeichen und Abbildung, von semantischer Festlegung und Öffnung, in der Überschreitung von Grenzziehungen und der Verortung zwischen unterschiedlichen semiotischen Systemen liegt ihre zugleich gattungsbildende und gattungsbrechende Spezifik. Das Dossier versammelt unter­schiedliche medienkomparatistische Forschungsperspektiven zu Ausdrucks­modi von Bild-Text-Welten in der Romania, um Merkmale und Potenziale des Dazwischen ins Zentrum zu rücken und diese zu konzeptualisieren. ; Graphic literature and visual poetry can be understood asarts of the in-betweenin at least two ways: on the one hand, they combine image and text as aesthetic and semantic means of expression; on the other, they reflect this in-between position via intermedial references and an affinity for themes of interspatial, marginal(ized) experience. Their genre-forming and genre-breaking specificitiescan be found in their engagements with multidimensional character/image relationships, with semantic determination and opening, with boundary transgressions, and with shifts between different semiotic systems. This dossier brings together media-comparative perspectives on different expressions of image-text relations as a way to identify and conceptualize characteristics and potentials of thein-between.

    In English and French relational adjectives occurring in construction with deverbal nominalizations can be thematically associated with subject as well as object arguments. By contrast, in German object-related readings of relational adjectives seem to be inadmissible. The greater flexibility of English and French in terms of the thematic interpretability of relational adjectives also shows up with respect to "circumstantial" thematic roles like directionals, locatives and instrumentals. It is arguably due to the common Latin heritage of English and French, since in Latin relational adjectives representing subject or object arguments of nominalizations are widely attested. However, even in English and French object-related readings are confined to result nominalizations, a restriction we suggest to account for in terms of the more "noun-like" character of result nominalizations in contrast to process nominalizations. Moreover, since argument-related interpretations of relational adjectives can always be overridden by appropriate agentive/ patientive phrases, relational adjectives cannot be analyzed as occupying an argument position, but rather as modifying the semantic role associated with it.

    This article deals with finite adverbial subordinate clauses and adverbial infinitivals. In Portuguese, as in other Romance languages, adverbial infinitivals are used more frequently and for a greater diversity of functions than in German. The article focuses on the semantic and textual differences between finite clauses and infinitivals. It is shown that infinitivals, by means of their introducing prepositions, link the described state of affairs to the surrounding text (sentence coherence). As they lack a verbal mood component, they cannot connect the state of affairs to the speaker and the ongoing discourse. Finite adverbial clauses are linked to their syntactic context by means of subordinating conjunctions. In addition, they are connected deictically to the speaker and the ongoing discourse by the verbal tense and mood components (discourse coherence). ; Thema dieses Aufsatzes sind adverbiale Satzverknüpfungen, insbesondere Konjunktionen und Präpositionen als lexikalische Satzverknüpfer sowie Tempus und Modus als grammatische Diskursverknüpfungsmittel. Ferner wird mit der Fokussierung bzw. Fokussierbarkeit von Subjekten ein Aspekt der Informationsstruktur berührt. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht das Portugiesische, das im Bereich der Satzverknüpfungen verglichen mit anderen (romanischen und nicht-romanischen) Sprachen über eine besonders große Ausdrucksvielfalt verfügt (cf. Rudolph 1997; Gärtner 2003; Blühdorn 2012b). Zum Vergleich ziehen wir das Deutsche heran, dessen Satzverknüpfungsmittel deutlich weniger differenziert sind. Adverbialia sind semantisch modifizierende Ausdrücke, die sich mit anderen (vor allem verbalen) Ausdrücken verbinden, ohne deren syntaktische Eigenschaften zu verändern und insbesondere ohne syntaktische Valenzen zu sättigen (cf. Corver/Delfitto 2000; Delfitto 2000; Bierwisch 2003; Rocha/Lopes 2009). Sie können durch Adverbien realisiert werden, aber auch durch komplexere Ausdrücke wie Präpositionalphrasen, oder durch Ausdrücke, die ein eigenes Verb enthalten, etwa ...

    This study investigates high vowel laxing in the Louisiana French of the Lafourche Basin. Unlike Canadian French, in which the high vowels /i, y, u/ are traditionally described as undergoing laxing (to [I, Y, U]) in word-final syllables closed by any consonant other than a voiced fricative (see Poliquin 2006), Oukada (1977) states that in the Louisiana French of Lafourche Parish, any coda consonant will trigger high vowel laxing of /i/; he excludes both /y/ and /u/ from his discussion of high vowel laxing. The current study analyzes tokens of /i, y, u/ from pre-recorded interviews with three older male speakers from Terrebonne Parish. We measured the first and second formants and duration for high vowel tokens produced in four phonetic environments, crossing syllable type (open vs. closed) by consonant type (voiced fricative vs. any consonant other than a voiced fricative). Results of the acoustic analysis show optional laxing for /i/ and /y/ and corroborate the finding that high vowels undergo laxing in word-final closed syllables, regardless of consonant type. Data for /u/ show that the results vary widely by speaker, with the dominant pattern (shown by two out of three speakers) that of lowering and backing in the vowel space of closed syllable tokens. Duration data prove inconclusive, likely due to the effects of stress. The formant data published here constitute the first acoustic description of high vowels for any variety of Louisiana French and lay the groundwork for future study on these endangered varieties.

    Als eines der Hauptprobleme der Rezeption deutscher Kultur in Frankreich kann die Dichotomie von Dekontextualisierung vs. Hyperkontextualisierung bezeichnet werden, wobei man das Bild von den zwei Seiten derselben Münze benutzen könnte. Die damit verbundenen Interpretationsansätze bewirken einerseits, dass bei der Auseinandersetzung mit deutscher Literatur, Philosophie und Kunst der historische, politische und soziale Kontext oft vernachlässigt oder gar ausgeblendet wird. Bereits Heinrich Heine warnte seine französischen Zeitgenossen in seinem Buch 'De l'Allemagne' (1833) vor dieser Gefahr beim Umgang mit der deutschen Romantik. Andererseits kann man ebenso häufig beobachten, wie in Frankreich geistig-künstlerische Werke aus Deutschland auf ihre geschichtlichen Entstehungsbedingungen oder politischen Implikationen bzw. Belastungen heruntergebrochen werden. Dieses Phänomen kann natürlich verstärkt in Zeiten ideologischer und kriegerischer Auseinandersetzungen zwischen beiden Ländern beobachtet werden, vor allem während der Periode 1870–1945. Aber auch heute noch - ein halbes Jahrhundert nach dem deutschfranzösischen Freundschaftsvertrag - prägt die Epoche des Nationalsozialismus den Blick vieler Franzosen auf Deutschland und beeinflusst maßgeblich die Rezeption deutscher Literatur, Philosophie und Kunst. Die hiermit aufgeworfene Frage ist die nach dem notwendigen bzw. angemessenen Grad von (politikgeschichtlicher) Kontextualisierung im französischen Verhältnis zur deutschen Kultur, wobei eine pauschale Beantwortung sich selbstredend als schwierig oder gar unmöglich erweist.

    Der Beitrag, der an einen am 22.05.2017 an der Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lissabon gehaltenen Vortrag anknüpft, setzt sich mit der Entstehung der Fremdsprachendidaktik und Fremdsprachenforschung in Deutschland aus der Philologie seit dem 19. Jahrhundert auseinander. In besonderem Maße wird dabei das Wechselspiel zwischen Unterrichtspraxis und Philologie einerseits sowie Philologie und Fremdsprachendidaktik/Fremdsprachenforschung andererseits fokussiert. Es wird aufgezeigt, wie im 19. Jahrhundert die Bedürfnisse einer zunehmend institutionalisierten Lehrerbildung zur Etablierung der Neuphilologie an den Universitäten führten, die freilich den Fremdsprachenunterricht nicht direkt in ihren Ausbildungsprogrammen berücksichtigte. Gleichzeitig entwickelte sich aber v.a. auf der Ebene der Schulen ein Diskurs, der als Fremdsprachendidaktik ante litteram bezeichnet werden kann. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhundert führt das zunehmende Interesse etwa einer Angewandten Linguistik an Fragestellungen des Fremdsprachenlernens schließlich über die aus heutiger Sicht als Etappe anzusehende Konstituierung der Sprachlehrforschung zur Ausdifferenzierung einer Fremdsprachendidaktik / Fremdsprachenforschung als eigenständiger wissenschaftlicher Teildisziplin. Dies soll am Beispiel der romanischen Sprachen aufgezeigt werden.

    Particles have no specific lexical function per se and must be associated with another word or phrase to impart meaning. Thus, they develop manifold forms of polyfunctionality. They can express emotion, and when used interactively in everyday situations, they are dependent upon the particular features of the context. While the German language uses particles extensively, French more commonly uses alternative devices to expressa speaker's attitude toward his or her utterance, as will be shown by the example of ja in the speeches of the narrator and the characters of the novel 'The Call of the Toad' by Günter Grass.

    This study analyzes Chinese, Spanish, English, Thai, Japanese, Korean, French, and German speakers’ motivation to teach their first language as a foreign language (FL) online without being trained as a second language teacher (SLT) and compares them with professionally trained SLTs. The threshold for starting SLT without teacher certification in FLT has significantly decreased simultaneously with the increasing number of online platforms allowing untrained L1-speakers to teach it without the need for prior formal certification. Long-term implementation and SLT success in online teaching depends on motivation, contextual and personal variables, determining if professional teachers (PT) or untrained community tutors (CT) continue or stop their online SLT activities. To evaluate possible differences between PT and CT motivation and success quantitative data were collected (using a 22-item survey) from a sample of participants (N=135) teaching their first language (L1=Chinese, Spanish, English, Thai, Japanese, Korean, French, and German) as a FL online. Findings are discussed concerning CT and PT success, professional development and in-service training. Findings suggest, that despite initial difficulties untrained SLTs may face differ from early-career PT, they can succeed in online SLT being able to make a living from it and under circumstances become a competition for traditionally trained SLTs. This opens opportunities for individuals to participate in a field of labour they would have not had a chance otherwise.

    Despite some critical voices, in German linguistics the concept of confix can meanwhile be considered as an established morpheme category. Schmidt (1987) introduced the term into German to describe bound morphemes that are lexical, but not inflectable. Since the 2000s, an increasing number of publications deal with the phenomenon and the term has begun to enter linguistic reference works as well. In French, the situation is completely different due to the structure of the language (poor in compounds and mostly post-determinative). Although the term and the concept have originall y been coined by the French structuralist André Martinet ([1961] \(^3\)1980 ), the denomination itself is barely present in Romance linguistics. French researchers usually take different approaches to discuss the phenomenon (e.g., neoclassical compounds, constructed lexemes). In Italian, the denominations confisso/ confissazione are first used by De Mauro (1999), who adopts both the term and concept directly from Martinet; moreover, they can be found in some contributions on word formation and lexicology (e.g., Adamo/Della Valle 2008). Nevertheless, the Italian termino-logy remains heterogeneous, with some researchers still using the terms prefissoide/suffissoide coined by Migliorini (1963). As I will show by comparing the languages in question, the terminology and the concept of confixes vary greatly between Romance and Germanic languages.
