Esther Leslie's path-breaking study of Walter Benjamin is unlike any other book presently available in English on Benjamin, in seeking to make a case for a more politicised reading of Benjamin's oeuvre. In looking at the entirety of Benjamin's work - rather than the four or five essays available in English which tend to form the Benjamin 'canon' - Leslie offers powerful new insights into a key twentieth-century political thinker, correcting the post-structuralist bias that has characterised so much Benjamin scholarship, and repositioning Benjamin's work in its historical and political context. In her examination of Benjamin's commentary on the politics and aesthetics of technology - from Benjamin's work on nineteenth-century industrial culture to his analyses of the Nazi deployment of the bomber - Esther Leslie recontextualises Benjamin's writings in a lucid and cogently argued new study Preface: An Accumulation of Technological Themes --Explosion of a Landscape --Benjamin's Objectives --Berlin Chthonic, Photos and Trains and Films and Cars --Dream Whirled: Technik and Mirroring --Murmurs from Darkest Europe --The Work of Art in the Age of Unbearable Capitulation --Time for an Unnatural Death --Benjamin's Finale: Excavating and Remembering.

Martin Heidegger's 1934-1935 lectures on Friedrich Hölderlin's hymns 2Germania3 and 2The Rhine3 are considered the most significant among Heidegger's lectures on Hölderlin. Coming at a crucial time in his career, the text illustrates Heidegger's turn toward language, art, and poetry while reflecting his despair at his failure to revolutionize the German university and his hope for a more profound revolution through the German language, guided by Hölderlin's poetry. These lectures are important for understanding Heidegger's changing relation to politics, his turn toward Nietzsche, his thinking about the German language, and his breakthrough to a new kind of poetic thinking. First published in 1980 as volume 39 of Heidegger's Complete Works, this graceful and rigorous English-language translation will be widely discussed in continental philosophy and literary theory

Brian Johnston's approach to Ibsen, now well known, is unlike any other. Johnston sees Ibsen's twelve realist plays as a single cyclical work, the "realist" method of which hides a much larger poetic intention than has previously been suspected. He believes that the cycle constitutes one of the major works of the European imagination, comparable in scale to Goethe or Dante. And he has shown Ibsen to be the heir to Romantic and Hegelian art and thought, adapting this heritage to the circumstances of his own day. This work demonstrates how the language and scene, characters and "props," of the Ibsen dramas establish a bold and far-reaching theatrical goal: nothing less than an account of our biological and cultural identity in its multilayered totality. Johnston argues that Ibsen's realist text, while stimulating the appearance of nineteenth-century life, also objectively and precisely builds up an alternative image in which archetypal figures and situations from our cultural past repossess the realist stage. Thus he sees the Ibsen "strategy" in his realist plays as twofold: (1) the dialectical subversion of the nineteenth-century reality presented in the plays, and (2) the forced recovery of the archetypal from the past, in a procedure similar to James Joyce's in Ulysses. By "supertext" Johnston means a reservoir of cultural reference upon which Ibsen continuously drew in his realist work just as in is earlier poetic and historical dramas

This work is the only study to focus on these three novels. The argument departs from previous scholarship by emphasizing the ambivalence and even, to some extent, hostility, evinced by each of the authors to aspects of modern social conditions, and by examining their discontents in detail. The study also shows a portrayal by the authors of a gradual increase in the tensions they detect in social and artistic conditions during the modern period

The impact of Heinrich von Kleist unfolds between precise depictions and moral extremes. Crystallized in words, his characters appear as paradigms of human fallibility. Their passions and obsessions, their inadequacies and longings are captured in a writing style that reveals its influence even in novels and plays of the twentieth century. This volume takes the literary reception of Kleist as one of its focal points and, furthermore, considers the author's oeuvre and his life on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his death

Eliot's The waste land / Georgina Paul -- The most beautiful / Barbara Köhler. In her 2007 poem cycle Niemands Frau, Barbara Köhler returns to Homer'sOdyssey, not to retell it, but to take up some of the threads it has woven into the cultural tradition of the West - and to unravel them, just as Penelope, the wife of the hero who called himself nobody, unravelled each night the web she re-wove by day. Köhler's return to the Odyssey takes place under the sign of a grammatical shift, from 'er' to 'sie', from the singular hero to a plurality of female voices - Nausicaa, Circe, Calypso, Ino Leucothea, Helen and Penelope herself - with implications for thinking about identity, power and knowledge, about gender and relationality, but also about the corporeality and multivocality which underlies the 'virtual reality' of the printed text. The eight essays in this volume explore Köhler's iridescent poem cycle from a variety of different angles: its context in contemporary German refigurations of the classical; its engagement with Homer and the classical tradition; its contribution to feminist philosophy of the subject and a female 'dialectic of enlightenment'; its incorporation of the voices of poetic predecessors; and the surprising alliance it uncovers between poetry and quantum theory

In this study, Beatrice Hanssen unlocks the philosophical and ethical dimensions of the Trauerspiel study, showing how its thematics persisted well into the later writings of the thirties. For by introducing the materialistic category of natural history in The Origin of German Tragic Drama, Benjamin not only criticized idealistic conceptions of history writing but also expressed an ethico-theological call for another kind of history, one no longer anthropocentric in nature. This profound critique of historical thinking, Hanssen shows, went hand in hand with a radical de-limitation of the human subject, informed by his interest in questions about ethics, the law, and justice. Through an analysis of the seemingly innocuous figures of stones, animals, and angels that are scattered throughout his writings, Hanssen reconstructs the often neglected ethical dimension of his historical thought. In the course of doing so, she not only places Benjamin's work in the context of contemporaries such as Adorno, Cohen, Lukacs, Kafka, Kraus, and Heidegger but also demonstrates the persistence of Benjaminian themes in contemporary philosophy and critical theory Pt. I.Toward A New Theory of Natural History. --Ch. 1.Adorno and Benjamin: Against Historicity. --Ch. 2.The Epistemo-Critical Prologue Reconsidered. --Ch. 3.The Turn to Natural History. --Ch. 4.The Aesthetics of Transience. --Ch. 5.Natural and Sacred History --pt.
