"Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Mühlen rejected her upbringing to pursue a career as a professional writer. She documents her extraordinary life in this lively and personal memoir, first published in Germany in 1929. "Princess Marie Adelheid of Lippe-Biesterfeld was a rebellious young writer who became a fervent Nazi. Heinrich Vogeler was a well-regarded artist who was to join the German Communist Party. Ludwig Roselius was a successful businessman who had made a fortune from his invention of decaffeinated coffee. What was it about the revolutionary climate following World War I that induced three such different personalities to collaborate in the production of a slim volume of poetry -- entitled Gott in mir -- about the indwelling of the divine within the human? Lionel Gossman's study situates this poem in the ideological context that made the collaboration possible. The study also outlines the subsequent life of the Princess who, until her death in 1993, continued to support and celebrate the ideals and heroes of National Socialism"--Publisher's description Introduction: An Unusual Book and a Strange Collaboration --Part 1:Seeking a New Religion: Gott in Mir.The Title; The Epigraph and the Envoy; The Poem;Appendix to Part I:The Völkisch Rejection of Christianity --Part II:Serving New Gods.Marie Adelheid, Prinzessin Reuß-zur Lippe: Society, Ideology, and Politics; 6.

"Thomas Mann's two eldest children, Erika and Klaus, were unconventional, rebellious, and fiercely devoted to each other. Empowered by their close bond, they espoused vehemently anti-Nazi views in a Europe swept up in fascism and were openly, even defiantly, gay in an age of secrecy and repression. Although their father's fame has unfairly overshadowed their legacy, Erika and Klaus were serious authors, performance artists before the medium existed, and political visionaries whose searing essays and lectures are still relevant today. And, as Andrea Weiss reveals in this dual biography, their story offers a fascinating view of the literary and intellectual life, political turmoil, and shifting sexual mores of their times. In the Shadow of the Magic Mountain begins with an account of the make-believe world the Manns created together as children-an early sign of their talents as well as the intensity of their relationship. Weiss documents the lifelong artistic collaboration that followed, showing how, as the Nazis took power, Erika and Klaus infused their work with a shared sense of political commitment. Their views earned them exile, and after escaping Germany they eventually moved to the United States, where both served as members of the U.S. armed forces. Abroad, they enjoyed a wide circle of famous friends, including Andre Gide, Christopher Isherwood, Jean Cocteau, and W. H. Auden, whom Erika married in 1935. But the demands of life in exile, Klaus's heroin addiction, and Erika's new allegiance to their father strained their mutual devotion, and in 1949 Klaus committed suicide. Beautiful never-before-seen photographs illustrate Weiss's riveting tale of two brave nonconformists whose dramatic lives open up new perspectives on the history of the twentieth century." www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0805/2007021032-d.html

Brooks Landon analyses science fiction not as a set of rules for writers, but as a set of expectations for readers. He presents science fiction as a social phenomenon that moves beyond literary experience through a sense of mission based on the belief that SF can be a "tool to help you think." He offers a broad overview of the genre and the stages through which it has developed in the twentieth century from the dime store novel through the New Wave of the '60s, the cyberpunk '80s, and soft agenda SF of the '90s. The writers he examines range for E.M. Forster and John W. Campbell to Philip K. Dick and Ursula K. Le Guin. He also examines the large body of criticism now devoted to the genre and includes a bibliographic essay and a list of recommended titles. -- PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION

The study also outlines the subsequent life of the Princess who, until her death in 1993, continued to support and celebrate the ideals and heroes of National Socialism"--Publisher's description

"In August 1961, seventeen-year-old Rita Kuczynski was living with her grandmother and studying piano at a conservatory in West Berlin. Caught in East Berlin by the rise of the Berlin Wall while on a summer visit to her parents, she found herself trapped behind the Iron Curtain for the next twenty-eight years. Kuczynski's fascinating memoir relates her experiences of life in East Germany as a student, a fledgling academic philosopher, an independent writer, and, above all, as a woman. Though she was never a true believer in Communism, Rita gained entry into the circles of the East German intellectual elite through her husband Thomas Kuczynski. There, in the privileged world that she calls "the gardens of the nomenklatura," she saw first-hand the contradictions at the heart of life for the East German intelligentsia. Published in English for the very first time twenty-six years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Wall Flower offers a rare--and critical--look at life among the East German elite. Told with wrywit and considerable candor, Kuczynski's story offers a fascinating perspective on the rise and fall of East Germany."--

How is drama related to its potential enactment - and is the writer really absent in his or her play? Kai Bremer explores the development of drama since Brecht based on Peter Szondi's »Theory of Modern Drama« Wie verhält sich das Drama zu seiner potenziellen Inszenierung - und ist der Autor in ihm wirklich abwesend?

In The Dybbuk, the mystical play at the center of modern Yiddish and Hebrew theater, the hero experiments with Kabbalah, dies, then rises from the dead to possess the woman he loves. The play's author was just as restless and rebellious. Shloyme-Zanvl Rappoport, known by his pen name, S. An-sky, was a Russian and Yiddish journalist, a revolutionary propagandist, and a pioneering ethnographer who lived with Russian miners and Hasidic Jews. Wandering Soul is the first biography of An-sky. Using all his writing in Russian and Yiddish, his drafts, and his revealing letters, Gabriella Safran explores his life, his work, and through him the rich world of the Russian Jews

This volume is a Nordic contribution to research on law and humanities. It treats the legal culture of the Nordic countries through intensive analyses of canonical Nordic literature, film and theater from the Icelandic sagas to Lars von Trier's Dogme films of today. It strives to answer two fundamental questions: Is there a special Nordic justice? What does the Nordic legal and literary culture mean for the concept of justice and for the understanding of the interdisciplinary exchange of law and literature?
