    The exhibition is divided into different parts, the first (Section I: The Legacy of the Fathers) exploring the rediscovery of ancient art in the 13th and 14th centuries by the likes of Nicola Pisano, Arnolfo and their successors. It then looks into the assimilation of Gothic style of French origin, including Brunelleschi's renowned sculpture, which is the starting point for the Early Renaissance. The exhibition follows development and influences from monumental sculptures by the likes of Donatello, Ghiberti, Nanni di Banco and Michelozzo, painting by artists such as Masaccio, Paolo Uccello, Andrea del Castagno and Filippo Lippi, and the impact on the political and spiritual mood of the city. Other elements include the development of perspective in bas-relief work, a taste for 'new beauty' and new commissions in places of worship, and the transition to the private patronage of the powerful Medici family.     Interdisciplinary in scope and grounded in visual, literary, and archival materials, the essays in this book probe many different facets of the society of Renaissance Italy, including the role of kinship and networks, power and agency in Medicean Florence, patronage and spirituality, and the generation and consumption of culture. This volume honours F.W. (Bill) Kent (1942-2010), internationally renowned scholar of Renaissance Florence and founding editor of the Europa Sacra series. Kent belonged to an energetic generation of Australians who, in the late 1960s, tackled the Florentine archives and engaged key issues confronting historians of that ever-fascinating city. With his meticulous archival findings and contextual interpretations spanning a scholarly career of more than forty years, Kent engaged with, indeed drove, the scholarly response to many of the issues that have shaped not just our current and emerging understanding of Florence and other urban centres of Italy, but along with that, a more nuanced view of the role of frontier towns and the countryside. Interdisciplinary in scope and grounded in visual, literary, and archival materials, the essays presented here explore a variety of facets of the society of Renaissance Italy, confronting and extending themes that have been emerging in recent decades and exemplified by Kent's work. These themes include the role of kinship and networks, power and agency in Laurentian Florence, gender, ritual, representation, patronage, spirituality, and the generation and consumption of material culture.     In den Florentiner Bildhauerwerkstätten der Renaissance war es gängige Praxis, Totenmasken und Lebendabgüsse von Gesichtern als Hilfsmittel für Porträtplastiken zu verwenden. Im Kontext zeitgenössischer Kunsttheorie wirkt der Naturabguss als Mittel zur Gewinnung von Realismus jedoch wie ein Fremdkörper: Gefordert wurde die freie Gestaltung, nicht die mechanische Reproduktion. Moritz Siebert beleuchtet die Hintergründe des notwendigen Kunstgriffs und zeigt auf, dass ein veränderter Markt in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts auch zu einer neuen Käuferschicht führte. Zunehmend entstammten die Abnehmer der Kunstobjekte wie Devotionsstücke oder Porträtbüsten in Terracotta auch dem einfacheren Bürgertum, sodass Bildhauer günstig und in großen Mengen produzieren mussten. Doch der Abguss von einem Gesicht besaß noch einen weiteren Wert, der über die Qualität eines präzisen und ökonomisch gefertigten Porträts hinausging, Porträtformen kamen auf, die genau diese Qualität des Gesichtsabgusses als Merkmal forderten.

    This volume addresses the major themes that marked the complex relations between the Medici Grand Dukes and the Levant. For over two centuries (1532-1737), the Medici, as Dukes of Florence and Grand Dukes of Tuscany, ruled over a western Mediterranean state, which had a mainly European geopolitical sphere of influence. However, the transformation of the House of Medici, from republican "primi interpares" of Quattrocento Florence to dynastic rulers, occurred at the same moment when the Ottoman Empire rose to the rank of early modern superpower, polarizing Mediterranean politics. The Italian Peninsula became the arena where the cultural forces of the eastern and western Mediterranean converged. As a result, from the early days of their rule, the Medici Grand Dukes became enmeshed in a power dynamic which encompassed war, religion, diplomacy, and economic interests. This collection of essays addresses these very themes and sheds new light on key aspects of the complex relationships between the Medici Grand Dukes and the Levant

    "This volume examines works of art in a variety of media produced in Florence during the period from 1300 to 1600. Chronologically organized, each chapter examines works of art and architecture within the context of the major political, social, economic, and cultural events of the period. Patterns of patronage, both secular and religious, that accompanied changes in political authority as power shifted from Republican regimes to rule by the Medici family and back are also assessed. The volume follows the movements and trends that were initiated by Florentine artists beginning with Giotto in the fourteenth century; then followed a century later by Masaccio, Donatello, Brunelleschi, and Michelangelo; and finally the achievements of sixteenth-century artists such as Cellini, Bronzino, and Vasari. The book is lavishly illustrated in both black and white and color"--
